The Student Voice is your opportunity to tell the college and the Students’ Union what you like, what you dislike and what you want to see at college.

Students Feedback in Group Tutorials Responses are compiled and feedback to group tutorials

Faculty representatives meet assistant principals

Class Representatives feedback to whole faculty

Faculty representatives feedback to Heads of Faculties

Each personal tutor group gets to elect two class representatives, who then meet with the rest of the course representatives in their faculty and compile all the feedback together. The faculty groups then choose two faculty representatives who meet with the Head of Faculty, the SU, the Assistant Principals and the Heads of Services to pass this feedback on. All responses are then passed back down to you. Anyone can be a class representative or a faculty representative, so if you’re interested, put your name forward and win your election in your Student Voice personal tutorials at the beginning of the Autumn Term.

We encourage you to read the College’s Equal Opportunities Policy and Single Equality Scheme, which are available on our website www.midkent.ac.uk We expect you to share in our efforts to treat everyone with respect and to value everyone as individuals. For your safety Powers to use reasonable force to restrain and to search for weapons Colleges have been given powers to address incidents of actual or potential violence on campus. The powers allow staff to search students for weapons without their consent (or that of their parents or carers) when there are reasonable grounds for suspicion, subject to certain conditions: > The search must be carried out on our premises or where a member of staff has lawful control of learners (e.g. on a trip) > The member of staff conducting the search must be the same sex as you and there must be another member of staff of the same sex present during the search > Anything found which a member of staff considers to be an offensive weapon will be seized and handed over to the police

Personal

Tutoring at

-14

2013 MidKent College

6-19 udents aged 1 For full-time st

Personal Tutoring MidKent College has an innovative and fresh approach to personal tutoring which our students tell us they find very beneficial.

Whether you plan to progress to another college course, go on to university or seek employment, you will cover a wide range of topics to help you in the future.

passport to employability Employability skills have never been as important as they are in this difficult economic climate. Your personal tutor will work with you to develop and hone your skills in searching for a job and going for interviews. You will also be encouraged to look at self-employment and all of the skills required for this.

r? what is a personal tuto

When you arrive at MidKent College you will be assigned a personal tutor who will be a source of information, advice and support throughout your course. Your personal tutor can help with a wide range of course-related and personal issues and provides a vital independent link between you, your subject tutors and any other support areas involved in your progress. You will work together with your personal tutor in weekly one hour group tutorials and individual tutorials (also called one-to-ones). In addition to these tutorials, your personal tutor will be available to help you settle in during your induction and you can call upon their support for any issues that arise throughout your course.

GROUP TUTORIALS You will have a weekly group tutorial with your personal tutor and other students on your course. These tutorials focus on helping you to be a successful student and on preparing you for life after your course.

Course Information 01634 402020 23

RIALS INDIVIDUAL TUTO (ONE-TO-ONES)

Throughout the year, your personal tutor will ask to meet with you on an individual basis. During these meetings you will work together to review your progress, identify your strengths and improvement opportunities and then set SMART targets to help you achieve your goals. This is completed through the Moodle PLP (Personal Learning Plan). PLP allows all tutors and support staff who are working with you in College to give you feedback, help you set and meet targets, and develop an ongoing report of your progress and achievement on your course. Your parents/guardians can also be granted access, giving you some additional support to keep you motivated and on track for achievement and progression. Your individual tutorial is also an important opportunity for you to discuss any other issues affecting you confidentially and in private.

NEED IT SUPPORT WHEN YOU We know that sometimes things don’t go according to plan. That is why your personal tutor is available throughout the duration of your course to provide support when you need it, with any issues affecting you. Although your personal tutor might not have the answer to everything, they can provide a vital point of contact and a signpost towards many other support services which are available to assist you. Ultimately, your personal tutor wants to ensure you are as successful and happy as you can be during your time with us. If ever you need help and don’t know where to turn, ask your personal tutor.

n o y c i l Po Plagiarism & Cheating

Plagiarism is the theft or use of someone else’s work without proper acknowledgement, whatever the medium, for example text, written or electronic, and/or computer programmes. Guidelines on Plagiarism The following are some examples of plagiarism: 1 Unacknowledged direct copying from the work of another person. This applies to copying from other learners’ work, the work of staff and from published sources such as books, reports or journal articles. It is as serious to use material from the internet or from a computer-based encyclopaedia or literature archive as it is to use material from a printed source if it is not properly acknowledged. 2 Use of quotations or data from the work of others is entirely acceptable and is often very valuable provided that the source of the quotation or data is given. Failure to provide a source or put quotation marks around material that is taken from elsewhere gives the appearance that the comments are your own. When quoting word-for-word from the work of another person, quotation marks or indenting must be used and the source of the quoted material must be listed in full in a bibliography at the end of the piece of work. 3 Paraphrasing, when the original statement is still identifiable and has no acknowledgement. For example, taking a 26 www.midkent.ac.uk

piece of text, from whatever source, and substituting the words or phrases with other words or phrases. It is not acceptable to put together unacknowledged passages from the same or from different sources, link these together with a few words or sentences of your own and change a few words from the original text. Major plagiarism is a serious offence and will result in College disciplinary procedures. In deciding upon the penalty the College will take into account factors such as the stage of the study, the extent and proportion of the work that has been plagiarised and the apparent intent of the learner. The penalties that may be imposed range from a minimum of a zero mark for the work (with or without allowing resubmission), reporting to the awarding body, to disciplinary measures such as putting the student on a disciplinary contract, or temporary or permanent exclusion from the College. If you would like to see the full policy on cheating and plagiarism please ask your tutor.

Data Protection The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force on 1 March 2000. This law reinforces common sense rules of information handling, which as an organisation we must follow. This law allows you to find out what information is held about you on computer and in manual records, e.g. medical records, files held by public bodies, financial information and so on. It is there to ensure that organisations manage the personal information they hold in a sensible way. The College has a duty to keep the information accurate and up to date, it must also only be kept for as long as we need it for a specified purpose and it must be kept secure. Further details can be found from the student intranet home page ‘Data Protection’ link.

Exams Info Examination Information Students must take their College ID with them to every examination. Mobile Phones, MP3 players and all electronic devices should not be brought into the examination room (sanctions if found with devices are shown below). We recommend that you leave these at home on the day you have examinations. Teaching staff are notified of examination rooms, however all students are advised to check the campus examination noticeboard to confirm the location of the exam. Timetable and room changes sometimes need to be made. Resits are payable. Costs to be confirmed. Any resits taken after you have left College will be an external entry. You should contact exams@midkent.ac.uk for details.

Certificates Certificates will be retained if you have any fees outstanding. More details can be obtained by contacting exams@midkent.ac.uk If you are not at home when Royal Mail tries to deliver your certificate you must contact the exams office to arrange for collection. You must provide current ID and sign a receipt. Certificates that are returned to the College and not collected within one year of issue will be either returned to the Awarding Body or destroyed. After this period you will be able to request a duplicate certificate directly from the Awarding Body at a cost. These will vary from Awarding Body to Awarding Body.
