Welcome to Dance Umbrella 2009 This year we continue our journey of exploration into the rich potential of London as a world centre for dance, not just in great venues but also where the city itself provides the backdrop for audiences to enjoy wonderful performances. Look out for bodies in urban spaces in which Austrian artist Willi Dorner creates a human sculpture trail around the South Bank, and Paul-André Fortier's Cabane presented at four contrasting venues in Canary Wharf, Smithfield, Marylebone and Greenwich. You’ll be guaranteed to see your city anew! This year too, we celebrate London as a place which embraces world cultures. Our African Crossroads strand is a unique opportunity to experience the exciting and surprising new dance which is being created across this enormously diverse continent. London has always been a place where people of all ages come together to express themselves. Dance Umbrella and Greenwich Dance Agency have commissioned Rosemary Lee to create Common Dance, an exploration of shared experience involving 50 dancers aged 8 to 80 and a chorus of 70 young people. The whole family will enjoy this engaging performance. And London is a place to which great performers love to return. Michael Clark has been associated with Dance Umbrella since the early 80s and this year we are proud to commission his new work at the Barbican, inspired by Clark’s admiration for rock’s ‘holy trinity’: David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. Also, festival favourite Mark Morris celebrates his 25 year relationship with Dance Umbrella with performances at Sadler’s Wells and across the UK. There is much, much more to enjoy in Dance Umbrella 2009 – performances, discussions and film. Even in these tough economic times, dance is alive and on your doorstep to uplift, entertain and challenge. We look forward to welcoming you at festival performances across London. Remember, you can book all your tickets in a single phone call to the Dance Umbrella Ticket Line on: 0844 412 4312 or online at www.danceumbrella.co.uk

African Crossroads A new generation of creators has emerged in Africa's urban centres and African Crossroads, a first for London and the UK, is your opportunity to see a range of vibrant choreography from across this enormously diverse continent. African Crossroads showcases three full-evening works: Ebhofolo, a powerful work by South Africa’s Vincent Mantsoe, already well known to festival audiences; Correspondances, a bold and engaging female duet from Nelisiwe Xaba (South Africa) and Kettly Noël (Mali); and Opiyo Okach’s Shift…centre, a promenade performance in which six Kenyan dancers will be joined by their UK counterparts. There will also be a diverse and lively mixed programme of new solos and duets from Ivory Coast, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two Brief Encounters complete the programme: Nadia Beugre's (Ivory Coast) haunting solo Un Espace Vide: Moi, and a Dance Umbrella commission, DIPLOMACY 2, from Andréya Ouamba (Senegal) and the UK’s Matthias Sperling. African Crossroads is presented across four venues from Southbank Centre and Stratford Circus to the Royal Opera House and The Place, and is sure to challenge assumptions about dance from Africa. With communications opening up around the world, African artists are globally connected and share concerns across continents and cultures. With strong individual visions and complex new physicalities, this is exciting new dance that we want to share with you. Do try it.

BARBICAN THEATRE Tickets: £10 - £35

CLOUD GATE DANCE THEATRE OF TAIWAN (TAIWAN) WIND SHADOW Choreographic master Lin Hwai-Min has created a contemporary dance work that makes shadows come alive. Joining forces with leading Chinese visual artist Cai Guo-Qiang, Wind Shadow is a study of motion created through monochromatic palettes and the use of light and shadow. Set to a haunting soundscape, the dancers capture the intangible quality of the wind and the variable structure of shadows. Projections of Cai’s gunpowder drawings merge into silhouettes and form a moving art installation within which the dancers engage with their independent shadows.

PAUL-ANDRÉ FORTIER (CANADA) CABANE

out and about One of the highlights of Dance Umbrella 2007 was Solo 30 x 30 performed by Paul-André Fortier outside Liverpool Street station to a total audience of over 10,000 people. Cabane (Cabin) continues Fortier’s exploration of unusual performance sites, this time using several, surprisingly different indoor locations. Each will create a distinctive ambience and audiences are encouraged to see Cabane in more than one venue. Fortier and visual artist/musician, Rober Racine, are reminiscent of characters from a Beckett play as they skillfully draw the audience in to their eccentric world using movement, audio-visual effects and props as their playthings. The result is at once bizarre, intriguing and touching.

JIRÍ KYLIÁN & MICHAEL SCHUMACHER (NETHERLANDS) LAST TOUCH FIRST Jiří Kylián, world famous choreographer and previous director of Nederlands Dans Theater, is celebrated for exploring the creative potential of older performers. Last Touch First, created with Michael Schumacher, focuses on three couples and unfolds like an eerie, slow-motion Victorian melodrama. A moving and aesthetically beautiful piece, Last Touch First explores the desperation and madness of six lonely characters who find a sense of togetherness as the work progresses. Set to an evocative soundtrack this Holland Dance Festival production recalls the plays of Anton Chekhov, a central inspiration to the choreographers. In this intimate work, the technical brilliance of the dancers and the extravagant costumes and scenery create a dramatic and gripping atmosphere. Meet the Artist: Thu 8 October. A BRIEF ENCOUNTER WITH…

ANDRÉYA OUAMBA (SENEGAL) & MATTHIAS SPERLING (UK) DIPLOMACY 2 Matthias Sperling, previously with Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance, and Andréya Ouamba from Cie. 1er Temps, negotiate their way through the intricacies of a physical dialogue in DIPLOMACY 2. Sharing a deep interest in improvisation, they create complex systems of encounters where the smallest of gestures become significant events, and generate movement ricocheting from body to body. They engage one another and the audience in elaborately shifting behaviour and, like political diplomacy, their work is imbued with a sense of formality and elegance. DIPLOMACY 2 is part of Dance Umbrella's Brief Encounters series, in which short works by talented new choreographers or established artists are performed prior to main stage shows.

VINCENT MANTSOE (SOUTH AFRICA) EBHOFOLO

Vincent Mantsoe, a dancer of riveting physicality and “writhing intensity” (NY Times), is an artist whose work is influenced as much by ancient ritual as it is by modern technique. Mantsoe returns to Dance Umbrella with his new solo, Ebhofolo ('this madness'), in which he takes inspiration from the four spaces of the traditional African homestead to reflect on multiple characters’ journeys through contemporary life. Working with dance historian Karen Vedel and using the music of Persian composer Kayhan Kalhor, Ebhofolo reflects Mantsoe’s commitment to cultural preservation while also negotiating the tensions between tradition and modernity. MAKE IT WORK A FILM BY GERALD FOX In 2008, Dance Umbrella commissioned and produced Overture 2012: Power and Passion, a large-scale work from Royston Maldoom. Set to Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony and performed by 120 young people at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra, it was an astonishing achievement. During the rehearsal period, filmmaker Gerald Fox, assisted by two young apprentices, documented the making of the 50-minute piece. Make it Work charts the creation of one movement of the symphony, allowing a rare insight into the work of a world class choreographer and celebrating the extraordinary accomplishment of the young dancers. Don’t miss this fascinating and enthralling film.

A Light Conversation is a profound and luminous dialogue created by celebrated artists Wally Cardona and Rahel Vonmoos. Richly nuanced physical interactions animate this fascinating exploration of a relationship, set in surprising philosophical relief by a spoken soundtrack. With the audience surrounding the dancers on three sides, the performers play out an intimate and engaging story of a couple navigating commitment, choice and sacrifice. Tender yet guarded with one another, the articulation and fluency that these mature dancers possess is beautiful to watch. Meet the Artist: Tue 13 October. VINCENT DANCE THEATRE (UK) IF WE GO ON Charlotte Vincent’s new piece, If We Go On is a series of individual acts that lay bare the mechanics of theatre and investigate the nature of language. Through miniature dances and stuttering songs, militant manifestos and extended exits, If We Go On embraces uncertainty with a dark, intelligent humour. An exceptional ensemble of multi-tasking performers and musicians morph words into movement, shunt gesture into sound and at times burst into song. In a relentless succession of splintered transactions, where words lose their strength, music strains to be heard and movement meanders into exhaustion and incoherence, If We Go On asks: if you had one last dance in you, what shape would it take? A FEELING FOR PRACTICE GILL CLARKE AND JEANNIE STEELE WHAT TRAINING FOR WHAT CHOREOGRAPHY?

Now in its third year, A Feeling for Practice is firmly established as a must-see for anyone wishing to gain insights from top dance artists about creative processes in dance. This year the focus is on the impact of training. Dancers train long and hard to attain the skill and artistry they need to reach the peak of their profession but how do particular training techniques equip dancers for different types of work? How do choreographers use and develop training techniques to ensure that their dancers have the tools needed for the work being created? Jeannie Steele, a dancer for many years with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, and Gill Clarke, highly respected dance artist and teacher, will explore these questions from two very different points of view. Dancers, both live and on film, will illustrate their presentations. Facilitated by Dick McCaw, this is a rare opportunity to understand the inner workings of dance, and promises to be entertaining and revealing.

KETTLY NOËL (MALI) & NELISIWE XABA (SOUTH AFRICA) CORRESPONDANCES With laughter, dance and seduction, Correspondances portrays a theatrical series of meetings between two women. Kettly Noël and Nelisiwe Xaba explore the intimate fabric of a friendship through lively banter and loaded exchange that is both hilarious and revealing. They display, contort and throw their bodies into movements that are as passionate as their dialogue. With copious on-stage costume changes, impressive rantings and malicious scheming, these striking women are irresistibly entertaining and provocative. Vividly portrayed with raw sensuality, this is a brazen and rebellious duet.

WHERE ARE THE WOMEN? ‘Women are good for the pioneer work, but when it has developed to a certain point, the men must take it over.’ NINETTE DE VALOIS, FOUNDER OF THE ROYAL BALLET

The latest in a series of Dance Umbrella/Dance UK discussions focuses on the current lack of high profile UK female choreographers, arguments about which have recently made a splash across the arts press. This has triggered fiery exchanges about the validity of the debate, the barriers to women's professional development and what steps, if any, might be taken to promote women in choreography. Historically, the dance sector and choreography have been dominated by iconic female figures, from Martha Graham and Bronislava Nijinska, to Pina Bausch and Germaine Acogny, so why in the UK today is there a perception that we have a problem? Linda Jasper, Director of Youth Dance England, chairs a debate discussing the issues with choreographers Siobhan Davies, Charlotte Vincent, Kettly Noël and Nelisiwe Xaba; Brendan Keaney, Director of Greenwich Dance Agency; and Julia Carruthers, Executive Director of Akram Khan Company. In partnership with Dance UK.

The piece also includes original film by Pete Gomes shot in Southall and Brick Lane. The athletic dancers bring a fierce dynamism to Faultline contributing to a vivid portrayal of the turbulent tensions amongst British Asian youth today. Meet the Artist: Wed 21 October. WENDY HOUSTOUN (UK) KEEP DANCING

Wendy Houstoun is a dance theatre artist who has developed a distinctive style that combines movement with text, and meaning with humour. In her solo, Keep Dancing, a typist gets waylaid by the act of preparation before finding herself in a loop of action she finds difficult to escape. Keep Dancing is a dialogue with technology and a visual display including fascinating archive footage. Houstoun challenges preconceptions about movement but also communicates clearly and humorously about contemporary culture. In this new work, she re-asserts herself as a performer of integrity and independence. Meet the Artist: Thu 22 October. Free to same-day ticket holders after the performance.

OPIYO OKACH (KENYA) SHIFT…CENTRE

african crossroads Opiyo Okach's resolutely experimental Shift...centre - series 10 is based on improvisation and instant composition. It breaks down conventional performance boundaries and blurs the edges between participants and audience through its exploration of multiple spaces and perceptions. In this promenade performance, the audience is free to move about and gain a 360 degree view of the multiple scenes at play. Joined by a group of London performers, the six African dancers move with a dynamic precision and fluidity to an electronic score augmented by powerful Kenyan vocalist Anastasia Akumu. The choices of the dancers, the public and the characteristics of the space determine the overall structure of the piece making each performance unique. Meet the Artist: Sat 24 October. MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP (USA) MIXED PROGRAMME Acclaimed throughout the world, Mark Morris celebrates 25 years as a Dance Umbrella favourite with two programmes showcasing brand new works alongside classics from the company’s repertoire. His choreography is driven by his response to music, here ranging from the abundant lyricism of Schubert to the ecclecticism of Charles Ives and the catchiness of American Western swing. Programme One features Bedtime (Franz Schubert), V (Robert Schumann) and the UK premiere of Empire Garden, performed by 15 dancers and set to a score by Charles Ives for strings and piano. The new work Visitation opens Programme Two, with nine dancers performing to Ludwig van Beethoven’s Cello Sonata no. 4 in C major. The evening is completed by the jubilant Going Away Party, Grand Duo and the London premiere of Excursions.

MICHAEL CLARK COMPANY (UK) (NEW WORK)

Photo copyright Mick Rock 1972, 2009

Michael Clark Company returns to the Barbican Theatre with a new production evolving from Clark’s admiration for the music of rock’s holy trinity: David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed. Clark’s ensemble features dancers Kate Coyne, Melissa Hetherington, Oxana Panchenko, Clair Thomas, Benjamin Warbis and Simon Williams. Throughout the 28 years of his association with Dance Umbrella, Clark has thrilled audiences, creating work that combines his classical fluency with a twisted contemporary sensibility that embraces embarrassment, doubt and fear, as well as grace, virtue and control. Famed for his collaborations with bands, fashion designers and visual artists, Michael Clark has changed the face of British dance.

‘There is no dancer-choreographer alive who so naturally treads the line between the rigour of classical dance and the reckless glamour of rock and fashion.’ THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

Commissioned by barbicanbite09 and Dance Umbrella (London), La Biennale di Venezia (Venice) and Dansens Hus (Stockholm) as part of European Network of Performing Arts (ENPARTS) Co-produced by Dance Umbrella, barbicanbite09, Michael Clark Company, Edinburgh International Festival, Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and Maison des Arts de Créteil.

RAIMUND HOGHE (GERMANY) L'APRÈS-MIDI

A leading figure in European dance, Raimund Hoghe makes his festival debut with L'Apres-midi, a solo for Emmanuel Eggermont. This remarkable work continues Hoghe’s passion for reinterpreting classics in the ballet repertoire which have included Sacre - The Rite of Spring (2004) and Swan Lake, 4 Acts (2005). Stéphane Mallarmé’s poem, L’Après-midi d’un faune inspired a symphonic work by Claude Debussy, to which Vaslav Nijinsky gave a choreographic interpretation that became legendary. A century later, Hoghe seizes this masterpiece and gives Eggermont the opportunity to follow in Nijinsky’s giant footsteps. Floating on the evocative music of Debussy and Mahler, the result is a poetic solo of technical brilliance that is as radiant as it is unique. Meet the Artist: Thu 5 November. Free to same-day ticket holders after the performance. Raimund Hoghe will take part in Independent Dance’s Crossing Borders, 3 November. See www.danceumbrella.co.uk for details.
