Amherst County ... POPULATION As of 2010, approximately 32,500. About half of the population is located in the south-central portion of the county around Madison Heights near the City of Lynchburg. The other half lives in and around the Town of Amherst, the county seat, in the northern side of the county.

At a Glance hospitals serving the region are in Bedford about halfway between Lynchburg and Roanoke, and Charlottesville to the north, where the University of Virginia Medical School and Hospital is located. About 270 physicians representing all major specialties practice in the area. Two nursing homes are located in the Town of Amherst, and several others are in Lynchburg.

GEOGRAPHY
The County is located near the geographical center of Virginia and within 50 miles (at some points) from Roanoke and Charlottesville. Richmond is 100 miles to the east. Washington , D.C. is within 170 miles of Amherst. Elevations range from 500 ft. to 4,000 ft. providing spectacular rolling countryside. Nearly 50 miles of this grand trail pass through Amherst County as it winds its way from Maine to Georgia. Enter the trail via the Parkway near milepost 50, or from Route 60 near the county’s western border.
GEORGE WASHINGTON NATIONAL FOREST
Occupying much of the western portion of Amherst County (and more than a million acres in Va. and W.Va), this vast woodland provides a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll discover numerous spots for hiking, camping, and fishing.
MOUNT PLEASANT NATIONAL SCENIC AREA
More than 7,500 acres of splendor can be reached via Rt. 631, just off Rt. 60W. Magnificent overlooks and trails reaching 4,000’ elevations.
JAMES RIVER HERITAGE TRAIL
This blacktop hiking and biking trail is accessible from the Blackwater Creek Trail at Lynchburg’s riverfront. A trestle footbridge carries you to the one-mile stretch of trail running the length of Percival’s Island, and a second footbridge leads you across the James to Amherst for another 1.5-mile path.
Plans are underway to open the first Amherst County Visitor’s Center in a few years. It will be located just slightly east of the intersection of Rt.s 29 and 60, inside the refurbished Amherst Train Depot.

ATV TRAILS
Amherst County offers 25 miles of trails for All-Terrain-Vehicles just west of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Rt. 130. For more information, contact the Forest Service at (540) 291-2188
VIRGINIA BLUE RIDGE RAILWAY TRAIL
This trail is open for two miles from Piney River in Nelson County to Roses Mill in Amherst County. The Piney River and adjacent farmland provide beautiful vistas for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. Numerous birds and native plants abound.
FISHING
Amherst County abounds with prime fishing spots. Boat ramps and launches provide access to 50 miles of water along the James, Pedlar, and Piney rivers. Anglers can also try their luck at one of the several fishing lakes found in county parks.
CAMPING OTTER CREEK CAMPGROUND (Blue Ridge Parkway) National Park Service facility near milepost 60 offers creekside sites for tent camping and RV’s (no power/water hookups). This group fosters and promotes community for lower and moderate income citizens of Amherst County who need emergency repairs. They do these repairs using the services of Amherst High School students and their chaperones, and the Transformers, a Baptist organization that also helps to repair homes in crisis. Our main ongoing project is to provide others better eyesight. Our club offers free eye exams and glasses to financially burdened people in our community each month. This includes free eye exams to all children entering elementary schools in Amherst County. The Lions club collects used eye glasses and refurbishes these glasses for others who can not afford to buy new frames/lenses. Good eye sight is not only a quality of life issue, but it is a necessity to maximize a child’s learning potential through the formal education process and function as future responsible adults in the workplace.

This program was initiated by the Lions club in 1999 and is a matching gift program between the school, PTO and in some schools the Ruritan club. (AGAR) PO Box 117 Clifford, VA 24533 Lynn Kable, President (434) 989-3215 was founded in March 2005, supports cultural and humanities education through the production of performances and presentation of events in the arts, humanities, crafts, design and arts-in-healthcare, as well as historic preservation, horticulture and educational activities about these fields. They sponsor lectures, and production of books, CD’s, websites, videos and traveling exhibit materials. They also will sponsor and manage arts and humanities programs, interior and landscape design projects for healthcare populations, including patient and caregivers, and workshops. The goal of Blue Ledge Inc. (Meals on Wheels) P.O. Box 1332, Amherst is to deliver nutritious meals to seniors and disabled individuals who have difficulty preparing food for themselves. Volunteers deliver one meal a day, five days a week, to their clients, but the program is flexible so that clients can choose to receive food only a few days a week if that suits their needs. Some individuals only need help in the short term (such as when recovering from an illness), while others have long-term needs. But no long term commitment is required, and clients (or their families) are charged only $3.50/day for their meal. There are currently three delivery routes, mainly serving the northern part (north of Rt. 130) of Amherst County, but more routes are in the planning stage and will depend on client need. Food for two routes is prepared at Fairmont Crossing Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Amherst. Meals for the 3rd route, in the Temperance community, are prepared by Mountain View Market in Lowesville. Sam and Gretchen Price started the program. The current Board members include Ashley Carter, Molly England, Sam Price, Gretchen Price, Leslie Graves, Nancy Bockstael, Dr. Joanna Harris, and their new coordinator Tammy Martin. Currently, their number of volunteers range from 15-20. “Our goal is to help keep people in their homes,” said Molly England. “The clients love to see volunteers coming to visit them”. The Clifford Ruritan Club Ned Kable (434) 946-0116, supports local organizations and gives out thousands of dollars to fire and rescue squads. They also volunteer to work for them. Sorghum Festival, which includes all kinds of games, musical entertainment and vendors. They even hold the state joisting tournament, which is how the Amherst Lancers got their name. They would love to have some young folks become Ruriteens to learn valuable skills that are being lost. The Episcopal Thrift Shop 195 N. Main St., Amherst. Alice Morse, Store Manager, 946-2321 is a communitybased organization which helps people in need. The shop is run by St. Marks Episcopal Church in Clifford and Ascension Episcopal Church in Amherst. They have anywhere from 25 to 30 volunteers. None of the money goes to the church and they never have any idea of how much they will need. They have been in business for 20 years and have given away as much as $656,197. Cash donations as well as clothes and material goods are needed at the shop. The officers are Treasurer, Vanessa Angus and Secretary, Jim Hall. They are a small group with seven active members but they welcome everyone. Their last project was donating backpacks full of supplies to needy kids at Madison Heights Elementary for the new school year. Box 614 Amherst, Nancy Davis and Annette Sisson, Co-Presidents, 946-2340 mission is to care for and find homes for the homeless animals of Amherst County through adoption and transports to rescue groups. They also educate the local population about ending pet over-population through the spay/ neuter programs. Their focus is the prevention of cruelty to animals. Officers are Bill Kramer, Andrea Cerqua and Popie Martin. There are about 250 members in the HSAC. The South Central Spay/Neuter Clinic in Evington sends a van once a month to the Amherst shelter to transport the dogs and cats to their clinic, and then return the pets the next day. 9th Annual Business Appreciation Awards Dinner Held Last May Held at Winton Country Club, the Amherst County Chamber of Commerce, along with Amherst County, honored 23 local businesses and non-profits that were nominated for “Business of the Year” awards. Delegate Ben Cline, Virginia House of Delegates, was the guest speaker and addressed “Business in Virginia; A Commonwealth of Opportunity.” Businesses receiving nominations from members of the community, and recognized at the dinner, were Bank of the James; Blue Ridge Medical Center Rural Health Outreach Program; Central VA Community College (Amherst Center); Directional Coaching; Elkwood Salon; Episcopal Thrift Shop;

The winning nominees were Sweet Briar College (large category); Episcopal Thrift Shop (non-profit); Mutual Telecom Services (medium); Bank of the James (small-tie) and Wes’ Muffler & Custom Pipe Shop (small-tie). The annual Harry L. Day, Jr. Award, which honors the service of an outstanding Amherst Chamber member individual to the local business community in keeping with ACCC goals to improve business conditions throughout Amherst County, was awarded to Ronnie Adams. Harry Day Jr. served the Amherst business community and the ACCC with a strong sense of commitment and loyalty for many years.
