n case you missed the announcement on page 36, we now proudly host www.ShopForestFirst.com. ShopForestFirst.com features a directory of all shops, restaurants and miscellaneous services located in Forest. We want to constantly remind people of two things: one of them is that the expanding Forest business community offers excellent stores, restaurants and services...the other is that it is important for Forest residents to keep their sales tax dollars local, so other taxes, such as the real estate tax, won't have to be raised as much or as often. The new website features the new Forest First Guidebook and a complete business directory, in alphabetical order and by category. Beginning Feb. 1, sales and coupons from local stores and restaurants will be available, along with "For Sale" classified ads from Forest residents. We're wide open to any suggestions you may have to increase or improve the content...such as sharing any review you might have of a business, shop or restaurant you have used, either positive or negative. Just let us know!

A
n installer of solar panel systems, for homes and businesses, with a showroom in Madison Heights, is now serving Forest and adjacent areas. Solar panels are growing in popularity as a cost-savings measure that also increases the value of homes. Others embrace solar panels as a way to reduce the environmental impact of their homes. Owner and manager of Affordable Energy Concepts (AEC), David Wall, is enthusiastic and passionate about his work. “Most new solar-panel systems will pay for themselves in a reasonable amount of time,” says Wall, “starting with rebates of 30%-80%, and with accumulated energy savings over the years.” AEC’s staff is highly trained by the manufacturer, which guarantees it will be installed correctly. All work comes with a warranty, and AEC will even help with financing. The office will handle the paperwork required for state and federal rebates. David says, “with financing, only a small, up-front payment is
necessary…in some cases, no money is necessary upon installation.” If you may be interested in at least knowing if your home or business is suitably located to efficiently utilize solar power, you can call David and give him your address. He will then “Google-Earth” your home or office building to see what direction it faces and its proximity to trees and their shade. After determining that you would be a good prospect for solar power, Wall will then come out to your home and conduct an Solar System Site Analysis. Extremely thorough, the analysis will allow AEC to generate an accurate proposal that provides important information such as the systems payback period and rate of return on investment. A visit to their new showroom, where they display a solar panel system and how it produces electricity and hot water, is worth the trip. It is located in their solar-powered office (of course!) off Rt. 29 in Madison Heights.

A Lynchburg Tradition Continues in Forest A Nearby Location for Pottery, Jewelry, Art Work, Candles & More Carolyn Seaman, owner of Virginia Handcrafts in the Forest Square Shopping Center (next to Kroger), never imagined she would have a life in retail. Having moved to Richmond from Lynchburg over 15 years ago, being back home is an adjustment, but a welcome change. “I worked in a government agency for many years and felt very restricted. I needed a more creative environment to live and work,” Carolyn said. Upon returning to Lynchburg, Seaman rented space at Riverviews Art Space and began to connect with a community of artists and craftspeople. “I was listening to people say they missed Virginia Handcrafts and the beautiful handcrafted pieces that Mrs. Harriss carried,” Carolyn said. She contacted Mrs. Frances Harriss (Virginia Handcrafts’ original owner) to discuss “re-opening” Virginia Handcrafts.
“Mrs. Harriss has been excited, gracious, and extremely supportive from the very beginning!” Seaman reports. Virginia Handcrafts in Forest offers many of the same artists’ work and many new artists’ work. Carolyn strives to maintain the integrity and quality that Mrs. Harriss worked hard to achieve over the 40 years she grew her business. Carolyn travels extensively to meet artists, learn about their process, and evaluate the quality of their work. Her goal, as was Mrs. Harriss’ goal, is to provide customers with unique, quality pieces, handcrafted by American artists and craftspeople. Currently, Virginia Handcrafts offers items from more than 100 artists and craftspeople. Virginia Handcrafts offers a unique shopping experience for all! From home décor to special gifts, Virginia Handcrafts is the place to go!

Beyond these Hills After a 22-year career with a well-known local retail/manufacturer, Vera Swain decided to pursue a dream which was to open her own retail shop inspired by the mountains of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennesee. Called Beyond These Hills Gallery & Home Accents, Vera offers an interesting variety of home accessories, art and unique gift items, from sources locally and outside the area. Much of her inventory is inspired once again by the beauty that surrounds us. “We fully support the extremely talented artists, artisans and craftsmen found in the surrounding area”, Vera says. Currently displaying are a variety of original paintings, as well as prints, by local artists such as Betty Caithness, Barbara Cocks, Pat Dougherty, Patrick Knowles, Mary Stamps and James Underwood, just to name a few. Also displayed at press time is photography by Vickey Duncan, Pauline Goodman, Sam Maddox, and Robert Miller, whose“Foggy Wood” photo is being featured in the National Geographic book Simply Beautiful Photographs. New local art as well as pottery, quilts, candles, jewelry and unique items such as bottle lights are added weekly, so there is much to enjoy within a collection of wildlife, nature and outdoor themes. Vera laughs as she says there’s something for everyone here; whether you’re one of the guys that enjoys golfing, fishing or nature or one of the ladies that enjoys the softer, more feminine items. Beyond These Hills Gallery is one of two Bob Timberlake dealers
found in Virginia; carrying many of Timberlake’s signature pieces such as lamps, candlesticks, mirrors as well as his art. A recent addition to the selection here is Fishwood Farm's Alpaca Nook. A variety of Alpaca products such as foot warmers, shawls and caps are now available, just in time for the Holidays! Vera has found that there is a demand for art/craft and decorating classes in the area, so she offers a variety of classes for all ages and levels. For example, local artist Ed Gowen will be teaching a two-day class, December 17th and 18th, which will allow students to complete “Evergreen and Old Ivy” a beautiful oil painting “Evergreen and Old Ivy” just in time for Christmas. Swain is also now offering custom framing services, which is a natural for those purchasing artwork or those framing their own art. Meeting and working with new customers daily, Vera enjoys giving each one personal attention and going the extra mile by offering lay-away and free gift wrapping services. She hopes that you will stop in to see the shop soon!! You won’t be disappointed.

New Forest Chiropractor Emphasizes a "Whole Body" Approach to Wellness Dr. Patrick Stull, DC, and his wife Elizabeth's name for their practice, "New Life", is dually appropriate. The Stull's, including their 8-year-old son, Joshua, started a new life in the Lynchburg area after moving here from Georgia earlier this year. Located in the large, brick building with white columns, at the corner of Rt.s 811 and 221 (Forest Rd.), New Life Family Chiropractic & Wellness is where Ollis Chiropractic used to be (Dr. Ollis relocated to the Louisville, Kentucky area...the Stull's took over his practice). A Marine veteran after serving for 4 years, Dr. Stull first became interested in chiropractic care, as a career, about ten years ago when he was having back pain during his Marine Corps service, when he was helped by a chiropractor. It was then solidified after his son Joshua, then only about 12 months old, responded well to chiropractic care for an ear infection. Also, it didn't hurt to have an older brother Dennis, who has been a chiropractor practicing in the Minneapolis area for 6 years. After an Honorable Discharge from the Marines, Dr. Stull went back to school in his hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, studying at
the University of Wisconsin and eventually transferring to the prestigious Life University of Marietta, Georgia. He graduated after 7 1/2 years with a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Bachelors of Science degree, and has since picked-up 180 hrs. of pregnancy and pediatric post-graduate studies. "Our goal is to provide chiropractic and wellness services to all members of the family, regardless of age or general health," Stull says. "You don't have to be sore, or old, before seeing us, because prevention is the key to a healthy life." He went on to explain that he is also Webster Certified, which is a famous technique for allowing babies to get into the best possible position for birth. "Health is more than just feeling well, it involves moving, eating, and thinking well," Stull said. “We strive to help you and your family increase your quality of life through safe and effective chiropractic care. Patrick's wife Elizabeth is the office manager, and their son Joshua helps to entertain the younger patients or visitors. This is truly a family that wants to help you and yours.

A Treasure in Forest/Lynchburg for Our Children by Melissa Rector Language: Vocabulary enrichment, oral language exploration and learning letter sounds and symbols encourage children to write and develop a love of reading.
Have you heard of Blue Ridge Montessori School? If you haven’t – you need to do some research to learn about this wonderful treasure of a school for children ages 18 months – 6 years (including kindergarten.)
Cultural Awareness: Children discover the world through experiences in nature, earth study and global awareness.
Blue Ridge Montessori School (BRMS) opened in the fall of 1985 by its founder Tom Taylor. The school is located at 1071 Woodberry Square Place, Lynchburg 24502.
“My children have learned the ability to make choices for themselves, and furthermore how to make good, sound choices,” says one BRMS parent. “It is amazing to watch a child thoughtfully come to positive conclusions about the world on their own and take such pride in their purposeful work at their school.”
The children at BRMS engage in this meaningful work with specially designed Montessori materials under the guidance of trained Montessori teachers. Through this process the child gains a sense of purpose, independence and deep satisfaction.
Another proud BRMS parent adds, “My children are so obviously happy in this beautiful environment. I, too, have learned and gained so much from this approach and have thoroughly enjoyed what we consider this extension of our home.”
BRMS offers children a beautiful learning environment prepared in accordance with the Montessori principles of education. Dr. Maria Montessori developed this educational approach in 1907. It is based on her understanding of children’s natural learning tendencies and her belief that the years from birth to the age of six are the most important in a child’s life. In 2009 the school moved to its new location on Rt. 221 across from Scott’s Mulch and More, just past the Cottontown Rd. intersection. The building was designed to be a Montessori school from the ground up, and has such special features as radiant-heated floors (because many Montessori lessons are done on the floor), big windows for natural light, and skylights in the Primary classrooms. The new design has two Primary classrooms (ages 3 years to 6 years) and two Early Learner classrooms (ages 18 months to 3 years). Each classroom has access to a covered porch for outdoor environments, and a playground area with classroom gardens, and a fish pool/waterfall.
Blue Ridge Montessori School offers two programs; an Early Learner program for children ages 18 months – 3 years and a Primary program for children ages 3 years – 6 years. This year BRMS had the unique opportunity to expand and nearly doubled in size. BRMS is currently accepting applications and has limited spaces available.
The Blue Ridge Montessori classrooms are designed to have materials available for children in the following areas: Practical Life: Children learn to care for the environment, as well as their personal needs. Activities such as food preparation refine motor skills, promote concentration and enable the child to live graciously.
If you would like to learn more about Blue Ridge Montessori School (www.blueridgemontessori.com), please contact either co-director Susan Key or Robin Boling at (434) 525-0061 to receive information and set up your school tour today!
Sensorial: Special materials designed for the refinement of all senses help the child to clarify, classify and comprehend the world. Mathematics: Specifically designed work allow children to naturally discover abstract concepts, preparing the way for deeper understanding of math operations. 20
The mission of Blue Ridge Montessori School is to aid children in the task of self-construction in a nurturing environment. In the spirit of Dr. Maria Montessori, we promote peace, concentration, creative problem solving, order, and independence. Social, emotional and academic growth is encouraged in a developmentally appropriate learning environment. Respect for the child and all living things is at the heart of all we do. Children work independently with Montessori materials and receive individual and small group lessons in the following areas:
• Practical Life • Sensorial • Mathematics • Language • Cultural Awareness
"And so we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that is a natural process which develops spontaneously in the human being." – Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952)

Disney Cruise Line Sets Sail for Alaska in 2011 For the first time ever, Disney Cruise Line® will offer Alaskan cruises during a four-month season of seven-night sailings aboard the Disney Wonder® in summer 2011. Combining the natural wonder and adventurous spirit of Alaska with the unparalleled, familyfriendly experience provided by Disney Cruise Line, the Disney Wonder will depart out of Vancouver, B.C., calling on popular ports such as Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway. As part of the new Alaska itinerary, Disney Cruise Line Guests will be able to experience breathtaking natural vistas, an abundance of wildlife and the rich history and customs of Alaska's native culture. On their Alaskan adventure, Guests may catch a glimpse of a brown bear, bald eagle or humpback whale, and explore magnificent glaciers and fjords in Juneau. In Ketchikan, Guests can fish for some of the largest wild salmon in the world and learn about local culture through hand-carved totem poles. In Skagway, Disney Cruise Line Guests can traverse panoramic landscapes by railway, or pan for gold like miners from the famous Klondike gold rush.
Invite the whole family. Even the characters. A vacation so perfect, you won’t want to leave anyone behind. Every time you get together, you talk about “the time.” The time you all piled into Grandpa’s station wagon. The time Aunt Pat challenged Aunt Debbie to a limbo contest. The time the cousins bought matching ten-gallon hats. Every time you get together, you give yourselves something to laugh about the next time.
Before and after the 2011 summer season in Alaska, the Disney Wonder will sail seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. The Disney Magic® will once again return to the Mediterranean in 2011 with 10- and 11-night cruises sailing out of Barcelona. In addition to popular ports in Italy, France and Spain, the Disney Magic will visit Tunis in northern Africa and the island nation of Malta.
Imagine the stories you’d tell, the times you’d have, sailing together on a magical Disney cruise. It’s the ideal vacation choice for big families. Disney cruise ships offer outstanding accommodations with some of the roomiest staterooms in the industry including a select number of connecting rooms and family suites. And every detail is taken care of for you, even the complicated parts – the how-can-14-people-eat-dinner-at-the-same-time and who wants- to-stay-where parts.
Disney Dream... Launching in 2011! Created with all the imagination of Disney dream makers, our newest ship features spectacular innovations that will make dreams come true in brand-new ways. Legendary Disney service, unique personal touches and elegant details all come together on this incredible vessel to create spaces and experiences designed to delight kids, teens, adults and families in enchantingly different ways.
Each of you, all 14 or 18 or 22 of you, will be able to build the vacation that you want, with plenty to do when you feel like being together – deck parties, excursions, time at Castaway Cay, Disney’s own private island – and just as much to do when you feel like being apart.
Thrill to the first water coaster at sea, the AquaDuck! A wild, watery ride, this 765-foot-long, winding slide propels you up, down, around, through the forward funnel, splashing down four decks and even over the edge of the ship!
This isn’t just a family vacation. This is the family vacation that will be the talk of every family vacation from now on.

Forest Dental Center Continues Free Event
Every fall for the last three years local dentists have gathered at Forest Dental Center on Graves Mill Road to provide a day of donated dental services. This event called Dentistry from the Heart has grown over the years and now includes dentists from VA Beach and Rockingham County as well as patients from other communities. This year 15 dentists worked together with Dental hygienists and many other volunteers to provide dental treatment that included fillings, extractions and cleanings to over 200 patients. According to spokesperson Cari Zello the volunteer doctors and team worked over nine hours to provide treatment that would have cost about $69,000. “It seemed as though this year the need was greater” Zello said “and there were

DOGS & CATS ARE CRAZY ABOUT PET CRAZE! My name is Sheeba. I am a retriever/collie mix dog and was rescued by the Hobson family about 4 years ago. I share my house with another rescue dog, 4 rescue cats, 3 kids (not rescued) and two big people.
can special order your requests. Pet Craze has snacks and supplements. Since my food has been changed, I have noticed that my coat is shinier and I feel better! When my mom takes me to Pet Craze, I just want to play! There are sooooo many toys!! Toys for big dogs like me, little toys for my petite friends, and toys that I haven’t seen anywhere else. There are also great dog and cat toys (gifts) for people.
My mom loves animals and, about 18 months ago, she opened a store that is for animals like me. The store is called Pet Craze at Western Ways. Pet Craze has a self serve dog wash (1st one in this area). I walk up a ramp into a big stainless steel tub and get bathed with this really nice shampoo, dried with towels provided by the store and then groomed with dryers at a grooming station, if needed. Aprons are also provided in case I splash my mom. I like being with my mom while being bathed and my mom likes that she can give me a bath without her back hurting and that Pet Craze cleans up the mess! Basically, Pet Craze provides everything that a dirty dog like me needs to get clean at a very reasonable cost.
I would be remiss to not mention that my mom has this other store called Western Ways that is for horses (go figure). Western Ways sells all sorts of horse stuff (English and Western), cowboy boots, western clothing, kid toys, Dansko shoes and much more. This store has three adopted cats named Mittens, Miles, and Ollie. Come visit us at Western Ways and Pet Craze at Western Ways!
Before the store opened, I noticed that my food changed. My mom went out of town and took a class from an animal nutritionist and learned more about what is healthy for me and my adoptive siblings. Therefore, at Pet Craze you can buy highly nutritious dog and cat food. Also, if you want a certain food for your animal, Pet Craze

Lacrosse in Forest
By now everyone knows that lacrosse has come to Forest. The sport started at Forest Youth Athletic Association in 2006 with about 35 players, all boys. In the spring of 2010, nearly 190 players from ages 7 – 18 participated on seven boys’ teams and two girls’ teams. With such rapid growth comes challenges. Fortunately, a group of parents has taken on the challenge. Effective Nov. 1, 2010 a new club has been formed for high school players in the area. The Forest Lacrosse Club, a new 501(c) 3 organization, will take over the responsibilities of running a lacrosse program for high school boys and girls from the area. While the goal is ultimately to get lacrosse into the Bedford County schools, the Forest Lacrosse Club will welcome players from all around the area for the spring 2011 season. Participants do not have to be residents of Forest or Bedford County to play for the Forest Lacrosse Club. Last spring there were three boys’ teams and one girls’

News & Notes (continued) team at the high school level. The FLC Board of Directors anticipates at least two boys’ teams and two girls’ teams this coming spring. Given the rapid growth of the sport in our area,
there is a wide range of skill from beginners to experienced and teams will be formed to accommodate all levels. Tryouts will be held at the beginning of the season to help with the formation of the teams. Both the boys’ league and the girls’
league will have an elite (or varsity) team that will play a varsity schedule. The remainder of the players will be placed on other teams that will play a junior varsity schedule. Opponents will include club teams as well as some high schools in the Central and Southwest Virginia areas, such as Rustburg High School, New Covenant School, Hargrave Military Academy, Williamsburg Lax Club, Swift Creek, East Roanoke, New River Valley, South County, Fluvanna, Shenandoah and the Richmond Shock. In past years EC Glass High School, Salem High School and Patrick Henry High School have played our varsity and junior varsity teams, but with the addition of varsity lacrosse at William Fleming High School as well as others in their district, in the spring of 2011 these schools now have full varsity schedules with other VHSL programs and cannot schedule games with clubs like Forest. As school systems in the area add lacrosse to their list of varsity sports, club teams like FLC will be forced to travel farther during the regular season. For this reason, the mission of the Forest Lacrosse Club will be to work towards becoming an approved sport in Bedford County Schools. Over the next few years, the FLC will work to become a club that competes on a varsity level and will prepare players for the transition to becoming a school team. Beginning Feb. 1, sales and coupons from local stores and restaurants will be available, along with "For Sale" classified ads from Forest residents.

Why Shop Forest First? A Portion of Virginia State Sales Tax Collected by Forest Merchants is Returned to Bedford County. “If citizens realize the importance of shopping locally, there will be less pressure to raise other taxes, such as the real estate tax. They (the County) can’t continue to rely so heavily on real estate and personal property taxes to provide all of the services that people want.” Bedford County Department of Economic Development
Other Forest area shopping centers include the New London Food Lion Center (on Rt. 460) and Forest Square. 37
