A Note From the Publisher We should always try to remember to be thankful for what we all have in common: our time, ourselves, our health and our possessions. It is too easy these days to be drawn into an artificial fear of the future that seems to pervade our national media. I’m proposing another reason to be thankful: the professionalism of our local, Forest area business community. In these pages you will find dozens of business services that really care about keeping their customers and clients happy! I personally try to patronize as many of them as possible, and I’m constantly reminded of their professional attitude and abilities. During these Holidays, and the coming New Year, give a local Forest business a try… you won’t regret it. Happy Holidays, and thanks for your interest.

Adult Day Care Center Now Open in Forest! It started with Tara Archer’s love of elderly people, whom she worked with as a professional nurse. Now, after four years of planning and visits from state regulatory officials, Raspberry Hill Adult Daytime Center was fully licensed by the Virginia Dept. of Social Services in October. Tara and her husband Eddie (also an R.N.) are serving seniors 65 and older, Tuesdays thru Fridays.

At this writing there are eight openings for clients who are ambulatory (but not wheelchair dependent), and can do activities and functions in a small group environment (but may need supervision during the day), and are not incontinent. The Archer’s (both in their 30s) have a combined nursing experience of about 15 years, including within nursing home and hospital settings. Their objective is to bring more purpose and fulfillment into the lives of their participants, which they can more easily achieve in their cozy, family-owned and operated environment.

Located in a small, home-like group setting on scenic Elk Valley Rd. (about two miles from the intersection of Coffee and Perrowville Rd.s), Raspberry Hill is perfect for caregivers needing temporary relief from their ongoing duties. They are set-up to provide professional services for “isolated” people over 65, who are cognitively functional but may need medication management or supplementary care/protection during part of the day.

To set-up a no-obligation, free tour of Raspberry Hill, please call 525-4422.

Optional drop-off and pick-up service is available from the Food Lion shopping center on the corner of Rt. 221 and Perrowville Rd. All clients receive nutritious meals and exercise, and are exposed to others socially during structured activities. Also offered are health monitoring and counseling, a hot lunch and snacks, outings and field trips, pet and music therapy, and Bible devotion. 8

Kids & Parents Love It! Romp n’ Roll, located in the nearby Wyndhurst community of Lynchburg, is a hit with both parents and kids alike. With everything from arts and crafts to a mini rock wall, it’s no wonder this business is a hit with the youngsters.

The mascot and VIP in the gym is Rompy the Dog. Children learn to follow schedules that revolve around the playful stuffed pup as they start each class greeting Rompy at his house.

A children’s enrichment center, Romp n’ Roll offers a number of different classes for children between 3 months and 6 years. With titles like Rhythm n’ Roll and Art Explorers, kids engage in developmental play tailored to their age group in areas such as arts and crafts, gross motor skills and music.

“They look forward to Rompy coming out and giving them a hug,” said Mr. Mercer. Besides being great for the kids, Romp N Roll serves as a get away for new and experienced parent alike. Parents are asked to participate in the younger classes, while the older kids benefit from being on their own. Even when they are free to leave during the class, however, Mr. Mercer often sees the adults using the time to swap notes on parenting in the waiting area.

One of the gym’s newest classes, Chef Rompy, introduces children to the basic concepts of cooking. The 3 to 5-year olds learn skills such as measuring and mixing as well as an introduction to math and healthy eating.

Romp n’ Roll also offers Birthday Parties where the facility supplies everything but the food. Kids love the fun filled day that can be customized to meet their interests, and parents love not having to clean up afterwards.

TJ and Candy Mercer, the owners of Romp n’ Roll, were customers before they took the reigns in June 2010. Mr. Mercer remembered how much the classes helped his then two-yearold son by allowing him to socialize with other kids his age. Between TJ’s work in sales and Candy’s experience teaching 1st grade, they fell in love with the place.

Those looking to get a taste of Romp n’ Roll should head over to www.rompnroll.com/lynchburg to sign up for a free preview class.

Grocery Shopping & Cooking Getting Old? A

fter many years of cooking, are you ready to turn that job over to someone else? At Home Gourmet, located in Wyndhurst, wants to be your “someone else”. They have been cooking up delicious, nutritious meals for eight years. For about what you would spend in the grocery store yourself, you can have Susan Dolinar and her staff shop for you, prepare the meals for you, and bring them to you!!

about At Home Gourmet for several years, and one day I just went in to see them. We think Susan and her sister are geniuses! Each day after preparing the meals, At Home Gourmet runs a delivery route around the city. Pickup at their commercial kitchen in Wyndhurst is also available each day between 4 and 6pm. Over the years Susan has worked with many customers to develop the perfect solution to providing the freshest meals daily. Some customers can’t be home for delivery, so they use a cooler and ice pack system. Customers arrive home to their meal waiting in the cooler. They warm it up and are ready to eat a delicious meal in minutes.

Susan and her sister, Angela, started the business 8 years ago. Working in the Tidewater area of Virginia for 14 years in the corporate world, Susan would pay a good friend to cook for her. “I was always trying to eat healthier and lose weight. The only way I could do it was with help in the kitchen.” That’s how the concept for At Home Gourmet came to be. Meals are available Monday through Friday, with the menus for the month published in advance. They have a tremendous amount of variety. In fact, the menu repeats only twice a year. You select the frequency and amount of meals that suit your needs.

The Gloudemans, another retired couple, say they got started when they became temporarily unable to prepare their meals. “We tried AHG a few times to see if we liked it, and we were hooked! The food is tasty and nutritious, the menu has lots of diversity, and the prices are reasonable…even delivered to our door. We are grateful that AHG is available and we enthusiastically recommend it.”

The Simpson’s say they are more than pleased. “Susan and her staff are a pleasure to work with, very friendly and accommodating. The meals are delicious and the presentation is excellent. Flexibility is such a plus. At Home Gourmet saves not only my energy, but also saves energy usage with electricity and water. I run my dishwasher half as often as I used to. We knew

If you are tired of cooking, don’t like grocery shopping or need some variety, check out their website www.AtHomeGourmet. net, or their ad on page 21, to get a menu.

It's A Great Time To Buy Or Refinance!

Lowest Interest Rates… Ever! What is the advantage of refinancing in today’s market? Lowering your interest rate can save you thousands of dollars, and on a refinance loan, there is usually at least one month, and sometimes two, where you will not be making a mortgage payment at all – providing a bit of breathing room in the budget. There are also many people who are choosing to reduce the term of their mortgage –going from a 30 year loan to a 15 year for instance—often with little increase in their monthly payment.

Should I consider waiting until interest rates improve? Interest rates are at absolute historical lows right now. We have never seen 30 year rates as low as they have been in recent weeks. There is certainly a lot of volatility in the market, with interest rates changing by the hour, and there’s a bit more paperwork today to get a loan approved than there was 5 years ago, but it can be well worth the effort! What advantages do you offer that aren’t available with an online mortgage company? More than anything, it’s just that personal touch. It’s a handshake, and being able to sit down across the table and look me in the eye, if that’s something you want to do. It’s knowing that there’s a real person you can call, and an office you can walk into if you wish. At the same time though, we have all the technology capabilities of the online companies and can do pretty much everything via email if you prefer.

Is there a general rule as to how much you need to reduce your rate for a refinance to be worth it? The only “rule of thumb” that holds true is that the larger your loan amount, the less you have to improve the rate for it to be beneficial. For some, as little as ½ % improvement can make a big difference. If someone is in the market to buy a home, is there any advantage to getting pre-approved before making an offer? There are many benefits to obtaining a loan pre-approval. One of the most important is that when you provide a pre-approval with your offer, the seller immediately knows that they have a qualified and serious buyer. It also helps to expedite the process that occurs once you have a ratified contract because we’ve already begun the credit underwriting before you’ve even found your new home.

BrainCore Therapy Helping Many an interview with Dr. Patrick Stull, DC FF (Forest First)...What is BrainCore Therapy? Dr. Stull...BrainCore Therapy is a form of neurofeedback that allows the nervous system to retrain itself to create new, more appropriate brain wave patterns and break the cycle of neurological dysregulation syndrome. As this process takes place in the brain, we start to see a decrease in symptoms and an improvement in the individual’s quality of life. The training activity is simple, painless, drugless and non-invasive.

nervous system reorganizes itself based on this instantaneous information, the patterns begin to normalize. Over the course of 10 to 20 training sessions, the brain modifies itself to begin producing the appropriate brain waves at the appropriate times resulting in an alleviation of the symptoms FF...How long has it been in use? Dr. Stull...BrainCore Therapy, or Neurofeedback, has been in use for approximately 40 years, most of this time researched in university settings and NASA . In the past 10 - 15 years it has been used in clinical settings.

FF...What conditions can BrainCore treat? Dr. Stull...BrainCore is a therapy for ADHD/ADD, Insomnia, Fibromyalgia, Migraines, Anxiety, PTSD, and weight-loss. This therapy is an excellent option for those wishing to try something that is drugless, painless and lacks any nasty, negative side effects.

FF...Are many BrainCore patients giving “good reviews”? Dr. Stull...Yes, in our office we’ve seen patients dealing with insomnia, fibromyalgia, migraines and ADHD, and have had excellent results. One patient that comes to mind is an individual who has dealt with insomnia for 25 years. After successfully completing BrainCore Therapy, his sleep, and many other areas of his life, improved dramatically.

FF...How does it work? Dr. Stull...The training program is different for each individual case but typically it involves either training the patient to produce more of a certain brainwave or less of a certain brainwave. It works by placing surface sensors on the scalp and monitoring the brain waves. The individual’s brain waves will control a movie or a video game. The animated game or movie only plays when the patient is producing the correct brainwave. If the patient’s brain stops producing the desired brain wave, the game, or the movie, stops playing. As the

FF...How long have you been offering this therapy to your patients? Dr. Stull...We have been using this therapy in our office since June 2010. I’m a certified BrainCore Therapy Doctor through the University of Bridgeport. We have enjoyed seeing the positive, life changing results our patients have been receiving!

Donna studied Aromatherapy with the American Holistic Nursing Association. a program accredited by the Institute of Aromatherapists and endorsed by the American Alliance of Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the science and art of using the aromatic extracts from plants or their “essential oils” to effect health and well-being. Each essential oil has its own unique quality, smell, therapeutic properties and chemical composition. The term “aromatherapy” is relatively new but the use of essential oils, herbs and resins predate Christ. Remember the gifts given to Jesus included Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) and Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha).

Other popular modalities offered at FMWC are Hot Stones and Chinese Cupping. Hot stones allow the therapist to melt away the knots caused by stress and injury. Heat is both soothing and healing.

There are different types of cupping therapies offered at the FMWC. Magnetic, silicon, and suction type cups address a wide variety of techniques. Cupping allows for deeper penetration of negative pressure into the muscles tissues, allowing a release of metabolic waste and thus removing much of the pain chemistry. Using Hot Stones and Cupping enhances both relaxing Swedish sessions, as well as deeper therapies. The therapists also offer Sports, Deep Tissue, Myofacial and Neuromuscular techniques. These therapies are particularly effective for golfers, runners and all of the other weekend sports warriors. Assisted stretching helps work out tight and restricted muscles. Old injuries and accidents, combined with daily activities, often create pain that can be resolved with massage therapy. Many repetitive motion injuries can be helped with therapeutic massage.

Dance & Music Creations… & the Dancing Mother of 4 It’s a long journey from dancing professionally in Illinois, to teaching dance and raising four children in Central Virginia. But that is exactly what has been accomplished by Lanette Peters of Dance and Music Creations.

competition level dance team that competes and performs on a local, regional, and national level. “We try to be the balance of a fun and positive experience, as well as a good dance education.” says Lanette. Part of the fun includes three annual shows performed by the DMC students at Jefferson Forest High School.

Lanette grew up and trained in Illinois, where she enjoyed many opportunities such as professional ballet dancer, instructor, power tumbler, and all-star cheerleader.

“The students love to perform and what parent doesn’t want to see their child on stage having fun?” Lanette says.

After moving east to be closer to family, Lanette returned to teaching dance locally and has furthered her career by instructing for Liberty University; choreographing for local and state Miss America and Mrs. America pageants, Dance Machine, and Project Dance. She has also judged dance competitions on both regional and national levels. Lanette has also taken her students to New York (in 2004, 2007, and 2009) for Project Dance, a dance concert set up in New York’s Times Square.

Students enjoy the three light filled dance studios and two music rooms located on Goldenrod Place and Tradewynd Drive in Wyndhurst. The dance studios are equipped with professional ballet bars, walls of mirrors and professional dance floors. The music rooms are cozy and perfect for oneon-one private lessons for students of all ages and levels. Lanette points out that she maintains office staff in addition to instructors so that questions can be answered and details handled efficiently without interrupting class sessions.

Dance and Music Creations (DMC), offers over 60 classes a week for young people ages 3 through adult in dance, music, and fitness. Younger students are taught motor skills, basic dance skills and performance skills through creativity while older students learn to advance their dance skills through a core curriculum, as well as their performance skills with how to engage and capture an audience. For dancers that love the stage we have Shining Stars Performance Company, a

“We work hard to maintain good customer service”, she says. Parents appreciate that extra attention to the customer service end of running a good school. DMC’s Wyndhurst location is convenient to families located in Forest and Goode.

visitors. Talks are already underway, said McIntyre, to expand the park and walking trails behind the library.

expense of the new FVFD building. If you might be interested in helping out, please contact Asst. Chief Monty Coleman at 525-4044 , or mail your donation to FVFD Building Fund,

According to the market’s Facebook page, many already look forward to the market’s return on April 28, 2012. McIntyre hopes to add about five new vendors and prepared food stands.

New FVFD “Shell” Building Nears Completion...

...but Additional $1.2 million Needed to Finish Building & Project The Forest Volunteer Fire Department (FVFD) has to be out of their current Burnbridge Rd. location by the end of Jan. 2012; so it’s a good thing that the new building “shell” (four walls, roof and heat) should be ready by then.

Party & Meeting Space Now Available For Rent

However, according to FVFD secretary Scott Burnette, another $1.2 million is needed to add interior finishes, paving and landscaping. The new location about doubles the space of the current location, and sits on six acres.

Donna Barringer, Owner/Director of VA Dance Studio, recently announced the creation of Forest Meets! Located at the location of VA Dance Studio (1129 Thomas Jefferson Rd.), the 3500 sq. ft. facility is open for special events such as showers, weddings, receptions, reunions, anniversaries, workshops, luncheons and meetings of any kind (including church services) for up to 60 people.

“It maybe years before we raise enough money,” Burnette says. As of Nov. 20, 2011, the FVFD had been called 410 times in 2011, more than many people realize. The fast growth of Forest has created more demand. Their coverage area is about 86 sq. miles, and the FVFD has been serving the area since 1958.

Smaller spaces are also available, for as few as 6. A state-ofthe-art sound system is available, along with equipment for power-point presentations. Party and event planners are available for special occasions, upon request.

Donations from the community are needed to finish the entire project. While Bedford County does provide $39,000 per year to cover operational costs it does not subsidize the capital
