Forest at a Glance NUMBER OF HOMES- approximately 8,200 (according to recent Post Office figures). POPULATION- about 20,300 (based on the Virginia and national average of 2.5 persons per household). ORIGINATION OF NAME- according to “Parker’s History of Bedford,” 1988-”Following the Norfolk and Western Railway west from Lynchburg, the first village in Bedford is Forest. It had its beginnings in the late 50’s (over 150 years ago, before the War Between the States) when the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad (now the N & W Railroad) was built through the county, and was named for “Poplar Forest,” the nearby home of Thomas Jefferson.
