MEET THE CANDIDATES
BE SURE TO VOTE! ELECTION IS OPEN NOV, 8TH - 12TH Patricia Ault I have resided in SunRiver for 15 years. I knew as soon as I toured the Community Center and the Sports Complex that I wanted to live here. This is a wonderful Community and I want to preserve that. I was raised in New Jersey, attended Parochial Schools and Berkeley Business College. I have been self employed most of my adult life. My first two businesses were a janitorial business and a Pizza Parlor in Lake Tahoe. I met my present husband, Marcus, in Lake Tahoe. Together we owned two Port of Subs sandwich franchises in Carson City, Nevada. We also built a 38-bed Assisted Living in Carson City. It was the first assisted living facility in the State of Nevada to be built from the ground up in 1991. Between the three businesses, we employed about 80 persons. I do not have any initials after my name but I am honest and a hard worker. I am able to connect and reach out to many residents. I am a team player and have good listening skills. I understand the CA process and am very familiar with SunRiver activities and facilities. I have knowledge of City and County functions and how they interact with SunRiver. I have been a Washington County Delegate for the County Convention. I have been part of many clubs and groups over the past 15 years and I know many residents. I have demonstrated my love for the SunRiver lifestyle by not only being involved in a lot of different activities but more importantly by working hard to make those activities happen. I love people and I think I can bring history, integrity and respect to the Board. I enjoy most sports including snow skiing and snowshoeing. I love to swim, jog, play tennis and pickleball, ride my road bike and attend many fitness classes. I play the guitar and ukulele and study the Italian language. I also love to dance, cook and bake.
John Fields My wife Barbara and I relocated from California to SunRiver in December 2013. Most of our family have now relocated to the Washington County area. I retired in 2011 after a varied career in several disciplines. Barbara retired in 2012 after many years of teaching. I graduated from East Tennessee State University and was commissioned as an officer in the Regular Army 0f the United States. I served in this position for eight years. Upon leaving the army I went to work for Xerox in upstate New York and later in El Segundo, CA. I reached the level of Confidential Manager for Commodity Procurement. I left Xerox after ten years and served the next seven as Director of Manufacturing and Director of Operations in two private laser manufacturing companies in Utah and California. In 1996 I was offered a position in aerospace and joined B/E Aerospace in Irvine, California. This company was purchased by a French multinational (Thales Inc) in 2000. I worked a total of ten years in these companies reaching the level of VP of Operations for the In-Flight System Division with responsibilities of managing our business with Boeing, Airbus ad Embraer Air. My last job before retirement was as VP of Operations for a sublimation printing company (Textile Decoration) in Virginia. I have experience in managing and leading complex organizations, budget preparation and management, material acquisition and customer/supplier management. As a member of the Board of Trustees I will make decisions based on community input and relevant facts. I believe my experience will make a positive contribution to the SunRiver community. I am committed to helping ensure the SunRiver way of life is maintained and enhanced.

Doug Brown Recently, I have been diligently working with a committee developing revised Governing Documents for the benefit of our Community Association. It has been a demanding yet enjoyable process; one that I have taken seriously. During that process we strived to achieve the best result for all SunRiver owners. I now feel that I could also be an asset to you on the Board. President Steve Lindley and I also met with the Developer’s representative discussing our concerns regarding the commercial development. I then addressed the Planning Commission, recommending that the development of the new commercial buildings be postponed until plans could be modified to lower the elevation of the lots and change traffic access onto Pioneer Road. I am committed to engaging with the Developer and the City in an effort to achieve a positive result for all future development. Now about my background. In 1981 I graduated from the USC School of Dentistry receiving honors for being at the top of my class academically. In 1991 I completed a Residency in Orthodontics at Loma Linda University. Developing and operating a successful private practice I refined my management and financial skills. I have excellent communication skills and a solid understanding of accounting practices. During 34 years of dental practice, I served many volunteer positions most notably as a Clinical Professor mentoring young dentists, and on the Board of Directors for a component of the California Dental Association (CDA). As President of the Board, I oversaw the selection of a new Executive Director. Serving in the House of Delegates I participated in establishing resolutions to the Governing Documents of CDA and in giving direction to the management of CDA. I was born in Cedar City, UT and spent many summers there working with my grandfather at his stockyards. I have always loved Utah. While vacationing with my wife we discovered SunRiver. On our first visit we were sold, eventually retiring here in 2015. For a more complete biography please visit the sunriverstgeorge.com website or contact me at doug4srbot@gmail.com
Gene Rogers I bring to the Board a desire to move SunRiver forward as a sustainable and thriving community. I will continue to be a voice of reason, to represent the needs of our residents, and seek opportunities to unite our community and strengthen the values that make SunRiver a great place to live. Three years on the Board, including the development of the website, the rewriting of our Governing Documents, and the selection of a new Management company have strengthened my knowledge and commitment to these goals. I am an active participant in our community: Founder/President of the Photography Club, former Computer Club President, served on numerous committees, assist clubs/groups with the website use, regularly attended FAC and Budget Meetings, Manager’s Chats, Landscape Forums, Neighborhood, and Members Meetings. Outside our community, I have been an Ironman Volunteer Captain and Huntsman Event Coordinator, and volunteer for numerous community events in Utah and California. A full-time resident since 2008, I retired from a career in education, during which time I developed skills in problem-solving, communication, diplomacy, scheduling, budgeting, and facility management. I was a teacher, Principal, Athletic Director, and Department Chair. I was a league commissioner, working with officials, Athletic Directors, parents, and administrators from 24 different schools. As our community moves forward, I will seek to maintain and improve our facilities, improve our financial stability, and plan for the future. With your support, I can continue to serve our community’s residents as a Board member and will strive to work harmoniously with other Board members and Management, seek valuable input from Residents, and increase Volunteer opportunities. An influential Board member MUST be involved in our community. They must have the ability to make tough decisions, be honest and open with residents, be an active listener who seeks diverse opinions, be a realistic visionary, and mostly, concerned and passionate about our community. I believe that during my time on the Board I have demonstrated these qualities. Together we can make a difference.

POTTERY Happy Thanksgiving The Kindred Spirits Pottery Club recently had a class on making clay pumpkins. Our teacher, Sue, brought along a finished masterpiece for us to work from. Potters selected either Speckled Buff or Dover White clay and the fun began. All these pumpkins were hand built and began with a ball of clay. From there, one end was opened and clay was removed from the center of the ball to provide a hollow form. With a hollow form the ball could then be pushed and manipulated into a pumpkin form and grooves could be carved into the surface of the clay. With the body of the pumpkin finished a woody looking stem was created and leaves were formed. Some students added a dragonfly and a mouse. As of this writing the student’s pumpkins are all still in the drying stage and awaiting the bisque fire kiln. One has had a coat of underglaze, but the remaining glazes will wait until they are fired for the first time. Sue’s finished pumpkin was glazed in two coats of tangerine and two coats of golden green glaze. The stem received two coats of salt buff and 2 coats of frosted turquoise. The leaves and little mouse were glazed with Stroke and Coat. The clay was Speckled Buff. The result is a beautiful, festive pumpkin!

WOODWORKING CLUB Woodworking Club Joins Forces with Bryan Petrosie, Thanks Veterans and First Responders Bryan Petrosie, a local Handyman who does a lot of work in Sunriver, recently came to the SunRiver Woodworking Club looking for some help. He had an idea that he wanted to honor and thank local Veterans, Police and First Responders by giving them each a small token of appreciation, a small American Flag on a stand that carries the simple words, “Thank You.” These small gifts deliver the simple but important message that people care about and appreciate what these heroes have done and continue to do. The goal was to make up 400 of these small gifts. Bryan had convinced WalMart to donate the flags and Home Depot donated the wood, but he needed help getting the wood cut, sanded, stained, and a hole drilled to mount them to the base. This is where Mike Wilson and Hugh McFadden and lots of volunteers from the SunRiver Woodworking Club came in. They fired up the Club’s machinery to go into mass production, and the generosity to donate their time to get this job done. It took awhile, but before long there were 400 finished flags, complete with stands that all said “Thank You.”

SCIENCE
Mercury: Planet of Fire and Ice Have you even seen the planet Mercury? Most people have not. Because of its close proximity to the sun, Mercury remains elusive and difficult to observe. Until the Mariner 10 spacecraft rendezvoused with Mercury in the 1970s. all our knowledge of this innermost planet depended upon telescope observations. Those observations were inconclusive. We knew that Mercury was small, very hot during the day, and very cold at night. We could only speculate about what conditions were like on the surface. Now we know that Mercury possesses a very thin atmosphere, and upon quick inspection, seems to have a surface similar to the surface of the moon. Despite having daytime temperatures that exceed 700-degree Fahrenheit, Mercury has areas covered by water ice. Three spacecraft, one on the way to Mercury right now, reveal a fascinating world that’s unlike the moon, Venus, Earth, or Mars. Be sure and come to one of our two programs that unveil mysterious Mercury. The live presentation is on Tuesday, November 16th, and begins at 5:30pm in our Ballroom. The doors open at 5pm. You must buy a ticket in advance. Popcorn tickets cost just $1 and Chicken Wrap Sandwich tickets cost just $5. Two days later, on Thursday, November 18, 5pm, my good friend, Howard Simkover, will deliver the Zoom program. He has logged over 1100 Mercury observations, and he inspired me to take a greater interest in this planet. My live presentation is inspired by Howard’s interest and knowledge of Mercury. You don’t want to miss his Zoom presentation.

RESIDENT SERVICE COMMITTEE Surgery or Physical Therapy? It’s commonly known that the best surgical outcomes usually involve follow-up occupational and/or physical therapy. But when is surgery perhaps not the best option for a specific physical health issue? For sure, go to your GP (who knows your health history) for counsel and advice; however, don’t forget to include a good Doctor of Physical Therapy when seeking medical advice –especially if your problem includes a muscle, joint or back issue. While there are many questions surrounding a “surgery or therapy” decision, your physical therapy questions can be answered by Doctor Dane Burningham, PT, DPT. He will be the featured guest of the Resident Services Committee (RSC) seminar on Thursday, November 11 at 2pm in the Community Center. Dane is the Clinic Director and physical therapist at Mountain Land Physical Therapy right here just off exit #2 near SunRiver. And it’s not just surgery vs. therapy. Most times, our queries are more subtle or day-to-day concerns like a misstep on the pickleball court, for example. We wake up with a new pain or ache that wasn’t there before, and wonder what we should do about it. A good place to start is with a trusted therapist. Whatever your concern, mark your calendar now and plan to attend this most informative seminar on November 11 at 2pm in the Community Center. 12

HIKING
“Never follow someone else’s path unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost, and you see a path. By all means, you should follow that.” — Ellen DeGeneres
If you hike with us, you will not have to worry about getting lost…or if you do, you’ll be in good company who always finds their way home again! Seriously, we have an amazing group of hike leaders who know this area so well. We are beyond lucky to have them share their expertise and knowledge with us and to take us to places we might not find if we went hiking on our own. Our November hikes will take us to several nearby trails, some of which will be familiar to you while others venture into areas many of you have not seen. Check out the full hike descriptions on the calendar of the hiking page on the new Sunriver website. We hope you can join us out on the trail! No filters, just nature.
FITNESS
November is here and throughout history it’s been a time to celebrate and give thanks for the harvest, the crops grown and cultivated that keep people fed and sustained with life giving food. That same feeling of gratitude towards the harvest, coupled with new friendships and opportunities, gave rise to the first Thanksgiving in our country as the Pilgrims celebrated for three days with the native Wampanoag tribe. As we go through the month of November and celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends, we have a great opportunity to step back, take a pause, and focus on the things we are grateful for in our lives. And one of the best things science has discovered is that an “attitude of gratitude” can actually do wonders for our overall health. “The practice of gratitude can have a dramatic and lasting effect in a person’s life,” said Robert A Emmons, professor of psychology at UC Davis and a leading scientific expert on the science of gratitude. “It can lower blood pressure, improve immune function and facilitate more efficient sleep. Gratitude reduces lifetime risk for depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders, and is a key resiliency factor in the prevention of suicide.” Practicing gratitude also affects behavior. Studies have shown that grateful people engage in more exercise, have better dietary behaviors, are less likely to smoke and abuse alcohol, and have higher rates of medication adherence – factors that translate into a healthier and happier life! If practicing gratitude can improve your health, why not give it a try? If you’re not used to living a life of gratitude, here are four ways you can develop it for your everyday life. 1.Keep a Gratitude Journal – start writing down the things you’re grateful for. 2.Express Your Gratitude – Tell others that you are grateful for them. 3.Celebrate the Small Things – Recognize the little things in everyday life, not just the big wins. 4.Meditate on Gratitude – Let gratitude become part of your consciousness. As we head towards the end of the year, there are many things to be grateful for. The Community Center here at Sun River is certainly one of them, with the many fitness programs and amenities offered that enhance our lives daily. With your health goals in mind, maybe an attitude of gratitude can be added to that list of ways you maintain your good health. Be Well!

PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE Christmas is less than 2 months away. The preparedness Committee have a gift suggestion. How about giving your special friends, kids and grandchildren a helping hand with their 72 hour kits or home preparedness efforts? It might be long term food storage; a hand crank radio/cell phone charger/flashlight; or if they haven’t started yet, a backpack and some small things like space blankets, a combination whistle, matches holder and compass; and/or a knife multi-tool? Whatever you give them it could turn out to save their life, or at least make them more ready to do it themselves.
What is home preparedness? 72- or 96-hour kits have been a common recommendation when it comes to home preparedness. However, in a pandemic where a two-week quarantine after being exposed was not uncommon, even a 96-hour kit will only last four days. The current recommendation is a minimum two-week supply of necessities. This is a shelter-in-place situation versus an evacuation scenario, so your items don’t have to be in a portable bag or even all in one place. You just need to know where they are. With a quick internet search, you can find specific-to-yourneeds lists of recommended items to have on hand. Besides the basic necessities of food, water, shelter (and chocolate for some of us), a few other things to consider would be the following: • Pet supplies. • Toilet paper, to last at least two weeks, not two years! • Extra medication. • Specialty medical needs. • Games or other activities to fill the time. This is obviously not a complete list. The following websites have additional emergency preparedness checklists and ideas: • BeReadyUtah.gov • Cdc.gov/nceh/hsb/ disaster/householdpreparedness-fall2020-ld. htm • Ready.gov/plan The best thing about home preparedness is that you can decide what you need and how prepared you want to be, whether it’s for two weeks or two months or longer.

DANCIN’ TO THE OLDIES We are so glad that we have finally been able to resume our dances. It was a long year and a half! We love Kevin and the wide variety of dancing music he plays; truly something for everyone. As a one-man-band, Kevin plays and records all the various instruments, mixes them together, and then on the night of the dance he sings and plays the guitar to his own accompaniment. Quite a talent! As according to our custom, Dancin’ to the Oldies will be taking off for the holiday months of November and December. We will return on January 25th, the fourth Tuesday of the month. Be sure to look for ticket sales to open at the beginning of January.
Enjoy the holidays, and see you in 2022! 15

SWIM CLUB Annual Meeting/Election on Monday, November 15th in the Ballroom from 5-7pm The Swim Club hosted several fun events at the Pool Patio this past year in spite of the pandemic. We enjoyed the sun, the patio misters, our newly enlarged outdoor pool and hot tub. We grilled, grooved, danced, sang, splished and spashed. We kicked off our flip flops and raised a plastic cup (no glass allowed on the pool patio ...ha ha) with our friends. We will end our year with our Annual Meeting/Election on Monday, November 15th in the Ballroom from 5-7pm. Please bring a dish to share and BYOB. The Swim Club will furnish all paper and plastic supplies plus water and ice. Look for the RSVP information on the SunRiver Website. We finished this year with 117 Swim Club Members (breaking our record for memberships). The officers of the Swim Club thank you all for making this 2021 a memorable year. See you all at the Annual Meeting.
MINDFULNESS MEDITATION Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation that involves being fully present. “Be here now.” It involves being fully aware of seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling at any moment in time—without judgment. When we practice mindfulness with the group in the park, we begin by sitting comfortably in a chair and fully relaxing the body and becoming aware of the breath. We may hear the birds, the dogs, a plane overhead. We probably hear soft music playing. We see the blue sky with its occasional cloud. We may smell the fresh cut grass. We feel a light breeze or the sun on our skin. We are aware of our breath—each inhalation or exhalation. We may be aware that we taste nothing (or the mint we just popped in our mouth). We keep bringing our wandering minds back to the present. It can be helpful to bring your thoughts back to your breath. One of the advantages of mindfulness practice is that it can be done anywhere—brushing your teeth, folding the laundry, standing in a check-out line, driving, walking the neighborhood, enjoying a meal. Some of the medical benefits of mindfulness meditation include stress reduction, lower heart rate, improved immunity, better sleep. Meditation in a group has the added benefit of sharing experiences and learning from each other. All are welcome. Bring a chair and meet in the Veterans Park at 10am on Wednesdays.
