2022 BOARD MEMBERS As another year passes, the time has come for the annual rotation of board members. The association has solicited nominations for board participation. As a result of that process, the association finds itself in a position, once again, where there are not enough board member nominees to hold an election. As a result, the following board members will serve a three-year term. Two are returning board members. Josh Newton (returning), Bruce Snyder (returning),and John Fisher. Some information, value and views follow on each of the incoming board members. We’d also like to thank all of the outgoing board members for their service on the board and to the association. Daniel King, Sammy King, and Todd Gehringer will be leaving the board as of April 2, 2022. This will leave us with 11 active board members. As always, if you have an interest in getting more involved, please contact the office, or any board member. There are always things that we need assistance with, and always welcome member participation.

JOSH NEWTON, RED RIDGE WHITETAILS (RETURNING) General Bio

Greetings everyone! My name is Josh Newton I currently serve as President of your Association. I am coming into my 23rd year in the cervid industry, starting in 1999. I currently manage Red Ridge Whitetails and Cervid Solutions. I also have a podcast and YouTube show called North American Deer Talk. To say I’m “all in” on our industry is an understatement. This industry is not only my livelihood for myself and my family it is our life as well. On a side note: if you have a chance to say a hello and thanks to my wife Lisa and two daughters Lena and Gianna, do so, for allowing me the time to work on our issues for PDFA!

What are some skills you can offer to help PDFA in its mission to help promote and preserve the cervid industry in PA? I have a wide range of skills that I bring to the table; Communication with industry participants. Knowledge of all aspects of the functionality of what we do and who we are. Though not a skill, Experience through time in

the industry and time served on the board are helpful in articulating positions on various topics and providing historically context. These are among a few of what I believe are many skills I can offer PDFA if elected again.

What is one topic you are passionate about regarding the deer industry that you would like to help champion in your role as a PDFA Board of Director? Unfortunately, the broken record of saying CWD is one topic I am passionate about for a variety of reasons. The PA cervid industry must be the leader in this area advancing the latest in genomics, diagnostics, management and a host of other items if we wish for a brighter tomorrow. I am steadfast in my resolve to work with whomever can help us achieve these ends. I am also of the opinion that as an Association the PDFA can find a solution to CWD and provide a framework for Cervid farms in the state and nationally to flourish again without excessive government overreach.

BRUCE SNYDER, SNYDER’S WHITETAILS (RETURNING) General Bio

Hello everyone. I have been serving you on the BDFA Board for the last three years now. I have enjoyed working and talking with many of you over that time. I have a small whitetail farm (60-80 animals) and have been in the industry for 20 plus years. I look forward to serving you all in the next three years.

What are some skills you can offer to help PDFA in its mission to help promote and preserve the cervid industry in PA? Communication between the board and the PDFA members I feel is key to maintain a strong association. My phone is always open to everyone. In the past I have helped with the Spring Sale, Fall Sale, and the Gun Raffle. I am in regular contact with multiple board members to discuss new ideals and general conversation about the industry.

PDFA 2022

What is one topic you are passionate about regarding the deer industry that you would like to help champion in your role as a PDFA Board of Director? GPS testing along with practicing the proper breeding of our animals. If we as deer farmers start using the scientific data provided to us by our trusted scientists, we can strengthen our herd and with time, we can flatten the curve of CWD in our pens, but we have to stick together and work together. The biggest buck is not the best anymore.

JOHN FISHER, PHOENIX WHITETAILS General Bio

My name is John Fisher. I am 20 years old and have been raising deer my entire life. I am currently partners with Jason and Emily Hughes with Phoenix Whitetails. I am excited to see what I can bring to the PDFA board and help promote and protect deer breeding in the great state of Pennsylvania.

What are some skills you can offer to help PDFA in its mission to help promote and preserve the cervid industry in PA? My experience in the deer industry has given me many opportunities to communicate with deer farmers across the US. Relationship building and constant communications

with others in the deer industry in Pennsylvania is one skill I believe can help the PDFA to continue its efforts to promote and preserve the deer industry.

What is one topic you are passionate about regarding the deer industry that you would like to help champion in your role as a PDFA Board of Director? I have a passion for understanding pedigrees and how it relates to breeding. I plan to further this understanding and promote Dr. Seabury’s GPS testing and the resultant GEBV values and how it can be best utilized to eliminate CWD.

Live on DVauction.com 12 noon EST We are proud to be holding our Annual Pa Deer and Outdoor Expo. Please come out and spend a day with fellow deer farmers, friends and family. We are also open to the General Public. There will be a Live Auction, Raffles, and other Games of Chance. We will also have our Annual Gun Raffle. Proposed PDFA Bylaw Changes For the past two years, the PDFA has had difficulty in obtaining enough board member candidates to hold an election. As a result of this difficulty in finding resources, your current board is proposing a change to the PDFA Bylaws to modify the maximum number of board members from 15 to 11, and the minimum number of board members from 11 to 7. This proposed change will also better align with the changing membership numbers and Cervid Farms in Pennsylvania.

Current Bylaw: Article III. Officers and Directors Section 2. Directors There shall not be less than 11 (eleven) and no more than 15 (fifteen) directors.

Proposed Bylaw: Article III. Officers and Directors Section 2. Directors There shall not be less than 7 (seven) and no more than 11 (eleven) directors. PDFA 2022

FINDING REVENUE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH LEASING By: Gail Veley - Sponsored by The Missouri Deer Association

L

easing deer from established deer farmers for genetic herd improvement, or the leasing of land to provide managed hunting privileges, could stimulate revenue opportunities for those seeking to gain a foothold in the deer industry, as well as provide additional revenue to those already entrenched in it. Deer leasing, rather than purchasing, could be an option for those currently unable to purchase a high-quality doe or buck, yet need the genetics to improve their existing herd. Land leasing, for the hunting rights, could be an option for those perhaps unable to start their own preserve, but want to build revenue towards this future goal. Leasing land for hunting privileges can also serve as a way for others to offer and manage free-range hunting, while making it more enjoyable and safer for those who participate. In both scenarios, all parties involved must spell out clear parameters for leasing. In the leasing of deer, several factors must be taken into consideration, according to Nathan Blosser, owner of Blosser Whitetails in Buffalo, Missouri. Blosser, who has leased deer to others in the past, advises the following: • First and foremost, know the CWD status of the herd from which a leased deer is coming from or going to. If you are the one allowing a deer to be leased, make sure it will be able to rejoin your herd once the lease period has ended, or make arrangements to sell it to a hunting ranch. • Determine a price tag for the deer before it leaves the farm and determine who is ultimately responsible if the deer should die.

• Set and collect a monthly payment for leasing the same way you might set up a mortgage or rental property payment.

Davidson has also spent the better part of his life as a deer farmer leasing land from neighboring farmers for the hunting rights. During hunting season, • If a lease-to-purchase agreement is he and his employees do everything entered into, determine pricing up front. within their power to make sure the hunters that partake have a safe and • Write up a contract understood and enjoyable experience. THE FAWN CRADLE EASING FAWN CARE BURDENS

W

By: Gail Veley • Sponsored by South Dakota Elk Breeders Association hen South Dakota deer farmer Chuck Blain heads out to his deer pens every spring, there’s one thing he’s certain he can’t live without once fawns hit the ground. His fawn cradle. Introduced to the concept at a NADeFA convention close to seven years ago, Blain, owner of Twin Creek Farm in Fedora, South Dakota, knows it’s a “must have.” “No job is hard when you have the right tools,” he said. “It saves you from needing an extra set of hands.” The right tool was exactly what Ben Waldbeser, the inventor of the fawn cradle, was after 20 years ago when he first created one out of square steel tubing and canvas. Being a seasoned livestock farmer and having raised and handled calves, sheep and pigs, Waldbeser mistakenly thought handling fawns would be a piece of cake, comparatively. His confidence quickly turned to dismay. “I farmed my whole life and had a stockade for calves but thought with the fawns ‘man this will be a snap,’” his story begins. “I started to give shots and put the ear tag in one and struggled to get the shots in. Then I got the ear tag in and she jerked away, and it ripped the whole thing out. And I thought ‘there has to be something we could have to make this easier. Like a little cradle of sorts to hold them.’” Into his workshop he went and after punching holes into canvas and affixing square steel tubing, he took his makeshift invention and headed back out to his deer, picked up a fawn and tried again. “After two or three minutes I had the whole thing tagged and vaccinated,” he said. “It laid there like a puppet. It worked great. The biggest thing about it was that it was safe and humane.” Certain he had an invention in the making, Waldbeser, 65, paid $15,000 shortly thereafter

to patent his cradle. He also built a portfolio and sent letters to numerous manufacturers asking if they would be willing to mass produce them. While touting its uniqueness and handiness, he told them it could generate between $7 million and $10 million in sales over the course of several years, given the numbers of deer farmers who would want one. However, no manufacturer wanted to produce it. “They said it was too much like a calf stockade,” Waldbeser said. “I thought ‘you gotta be kidding me.’ A calf stockade you pull behind a truck and it weighs 200 to 300 pounds. This you can carry with two fingers.” So, disappointed but not at all discouraged, Waldbeser decided to make, market and sell them on his own. Twenty years later he has sold close to 4,000 fawn cradles from his farm, BB Genetics in Milford, Indiana. (For nostalgia’s sake, he still has the original one.) Fawn cradles can greatly lessen the amount of stress a fawn can experience when as a newborn they typically receive vaccinations, ear tags or medicine. “We use a cradle for the initial processing,” said Mark McMillan of M3 Whitetails in Franklin, Texas. “But on day two or three or even ten, we typically don’t use one. Or, if we are out in the pens and we see a fawn needs attention, we usually don’t go back to the barn and get it.” In an effort to process fawns in a timely manner, McMillan owns three fawn cradles all utilized by interns in the spring. McMillan also feels it’s valuable to know how to handle a fawn in lieu of a cradle should the need ever arise. There are deer farmers today such as Gary Stangohr of Antler Flats in Howard, South Dakota, who have never used one. “I’m not sure they had them back when I started farming,” Stangohr, 61 said. “Since I never got in the habit of using one, I don’t think it’s a big deal to handle fawns

on my own.” Having raised cattle, pigs and sheep his whole life in addition to deer, Stangohr takes it all in stride when it comes to handling his fawns. However, he if was given a fawn cradle as a gift, he admitted he wouldn’t turn it down. Blain knew he couldn’t turn down the opportunity to buy one at NADeFA. “There was no doubt that we were going to use one. Fawns are easy to handle in general but whether you bottle feed them or not, they do not like to be picked up,” he said. “Even our tamest bottle-fed ones do not like to be picked up. The fawn cradle makes your life a whole lot easier.” The ability to work alone with your fawns is one of the biggest reasons Barry McGrew of Awesome Antlers in Chelsea, Iowa uses not only one, but two fawn cradles simultaneously. “It’s pretty impossible to work without them,” he said. “When you catch one twin, the other tends to want to run off when they see you working on the other one. So, it’s a main component for me during fawning season for newborns, and up until they are about one month old.” Blain agrees. “Every fawn we handle goes in the cradle first,” he said. “It’s an automatic thing for us. Throwing ear tags in sounds simple but it’s pretty important to get them placed properly by putting them in the cradle and having them stabilized. You can do so much better of a job when you’ve only got their head to control.” However, whether you use a fawn cradle or handle fawns on your own, all deer farmers strive for the same thing: a safe, healthy, productive, stress-free and prosperous fawning season. Low sodium sea minerals: • Trace minerals are crucial for all life. every disease of plant, animal, and humans can be traced back to a mineral deficiency • Many of the trace minerals are no longer found in our depleted soils • Contains the perfect balance of minerals in an available form where soil and fresh water do not • Plants will take a trace mineral and install a carbon atom so humans and animals can better absorb the minerals • If available in the soil, grass will pick up approximately 90 essential minerals • A plant will make dangerous substitutions if the proper minerals are not available. Mycorrhizal Fungi: • Forms a membrane between the plant and soil. This gives the plant the ability to select the nutrients it takes up, and gives it the ability to leave behind or even excludes toxic ions like aluminum, cadmium and lead. • Forms a network between plants, soil bacteria, and other plants. Plants can communicate with each other via messages sent through these networks. (for example if a plant needs calcium

HIGH RISER @ 3 - NADR #284249

and the only avaliable calcium is 50 ft to the left the fungi can funnel it over.) • Help bacteria break down crop residues, cover crops, and manure and turn it into organic matter • Has the ability to break up rock to make minerals in the soil avaliable to plants • Soils are often toxic and out of balance and plants are left to function hydroponically. They simply suck up water from the soil and whatever minerals are in the soil including aluminum, cadmium, and lead • Herbicides, pesticides, nematicides, fungicides, excessive fertilizer, or excessive tillage kills off these helpful fungi. It is a no-brainer that something designed to kill things is going to do just that • MycorrPlus helps to recreate conditions in the soil where mycorhizae can thrive. Molasses: • A source of energy for the micro organisms

What is anaerobic Soil? • Compacted soil is anaerobic soil. • Most pathogens do best in this type of soils • In anaerobic soils oxygen isn’t present where soil meets roots, therefore it hampers nutrient uptake and plant growth

The Benefits of Aerobic, Structured Soil • No hardpan • Better production, as roots receive the oxygen they need • Legumes flourish • More earthworms, which greatly enrich the soil • Drought reduction- moisture soaks in, then is available when needed • You can get back into a field sooner after a rain • Aerobic microbes thrive, reducing the danger of pathogens • Aerobic microbes break down thatch and crop residue, creating organic matter • Less input costs Conquer your anaerobic soil

TESTIMONIALS

Broccoli Sprouts - Day 3

Mark T., NE. corn, pasture In 2015 I applied 10 gallons of fish per acre, some biological and some enzymes. In 2016, I broadcast 16 ounces of MycorrPlus, then put another 16 ounces in the row, on the seed. Although in 2016 I applied nothing but MycorrPlus, my organic blue corn yielded 20% more and my sunflowers yielded 25% more than in 2015. Where I applied MycorrPlus on my pasture, my Canadian Thistles turned yellow, and my buffalo ate them right down to the soil. I figure that the MycorrPlus made them more palatable. Roger Berns, WI. corn, pasture On my corn this year, the TDN was 87.95, protein was 10.56, and test weights were 60.9. A few stalks had 3 ears. The 3rd ear wasn’t that large, but it was filled out. The man who bought the corn said, “Boy, this is heavy stuff”. Others in my area said their corn yields were way down, they said they had too much rain. But my corn yields were up with big ears. Some stalks were 12 feet tall. On my pastures, I have 36 head on 19 acres. My cattle are fatter than a pumpkin, nice and round. My grazing fields last a lot longer with the MycorrPlus. My thistles are gone; either the cows ate them or the grass squeezed them out. My apples are delicious, and people tell me that my apple cider is extremely good. When they try other organic ciders, they buy mine.

Broccoli Sprouts - Day 6

Andrew Curtiss, MI. potatoes, vegetables I grow CSA and farm market vegetables on an acre plot of land. It is land that had been used for conventional agriculture for 30 years prior to 2015. At your recommendation, I applied a full (64 oz.) MycorrPlus-A soil formula to the acre in May of 2015. To say I was impressed may be an understatement. I planted 75 pounds of seed potatoes; my final potato harvest was in the 1200-pound range. My shell peas produced large quantities of the sweetest peas. They grew for nearly 6 weeks. The bush snap beans I grew we picked off for over 6 weeks. When I quit picking them, they were still flowering. We were just completely sick of picking beans. Overall, the flavor of our produce was exceptional. At the farmer’s market I was told every week how excellent our produce was. What impressed me the most was the plant’s ability to deal with stress. In mid-June we had almost five inches of rain in two days. I thought for sure I was going to lose half the garden, as it was under water for almost 12 hours. The plants pushed through. What then followed was 21 days without rain. Never once in that time did I see a wilted plant. When it came time to tear the garden down, I was blown away by the mycorrhizal fungi all over the roots of our plants. I firmly believe that symbiotic relationship between plant and root was the key to our success in 2015. The root structures were amazing. Thanks for an awesome product.

CWD Genomic Susceptibility Subsidization Program Application This application is required for enrollment in the CWD Genomic Susceptibility Subsidization Program, which allows for the use of USDA grant funds to subsidize testing via the North American Deer Registry (NADR). Results from this testing will include a Genomically Estimated Breeding Value (GEBV) for each deer along with an interpretation of the results from Dr. Chris Seabury (Texas A&M University), pioneer and creator of this service. This program allows each Herd Certification Program (HCP) participant to submit up to 12 samples from breeding white-tailed deer and each Herd Monitoring Program (HMP) participant to submit up to five samples until March 21, 2022. After March 21, 2022 and August 15, 2022 HCP and HMP may submit samples from up to 24 deer per participant until funds are exhausted. If funds remain after August 15, 2022, there will be no limit to the number of deer samples submitted per participant until funds are exhausted or until September 30, 2022, the end date of the program. Please note – the day samples are received by the laboratory will determine which round of funds disbursal applies.

Deer Eligibility - Each participating deer must adhere to the following rules: 1) Must be a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Hybrids and other species are not eligible. 2) Each deer must have official ID in place and must be listed as existing in the herd with the same ID on the most recently submitted herd inventory. 3) If the deer dies while still in your possession, it must be tested for CWD and the results must be shared with Dr. Seabury to further his research into CWD resistance. 4) The cost of testing is $75 per animal. The grant will cover $50 of this testing for each eligible deer and the owner/participant will be responsible for making payment directly to NADR for the remaining amount due. Testing will not be performed until payment from the owner is received by NADR and NADR is able to confirm funds sufficient to cover the subsidized portion are available. Unfunded samples will not be tested until payment has been received by NADR. NADR membership is not required. 5) The herd participant must consent to allow NADR to share aggregated, anonymized data by state with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA). This data will be limited to GEBV scores for each deer that are not associated with individual deer. A separate spreadsheet generated by NADR will be shared with PDA that provides farm/participant name, date of sample receipt, number of samples received, official ID for samples received, total amount due, amount paid by participant, and amount due from the grant. This is purely for financial accountability purposes to ensure the grant money is being spent towards improving captive cervid resistance to CWD. 6) Animals known to be CWD positive and those with illness suspicious of CWD are not eligible for this program. NADR cannot accept samples from these animals.

Instructions for Submission 1) A full thickness ear punch of the pinna, no less than 2mm diameter, must be submitted in an Allflex tissue sampling tube or similar device. If an Allflex tissue sampling tube is not available, the tissue should be sealed in a clean genomics hair card. Great care must be taken to prevent cross contamination of samples and gloves should not be worn when collecting hair samples as hair is likely to stick to them and end up in the wrong sample. 2) The cervid owner or farm manager or designee thereof is responsible for sending the submission form to RA-AG-GEBV@pa.gov or address to Bureau of Animal Health – GEBV CWD Program, 2301 North Cameron Street, Room 412, Harrisburg, PA 17110. The submission form will be reviewed to ensure eligibility. 3) A copy of the submission form must also be enclosed with the samples. Samples are to be sent directly to NADR at 1601 Medical Center Drive, Suite 1, Edmond, OK 73034. 4) Samples may be collected by the herd owner, herd manager or designee or by an accredited veterinarian. It is critical that samples are properly and clearly labeled to ensure the animal listed on the report matches the animal from which the sample was taken. 5) The herd manger/owner is responsible for making payment for their portion ($25 per test) directly to NADR by check or credit card (please see NADR (nadeerregistry.com) for a credit card authorization form). The $50 subsidization from the grant will be paid directly from PDA to NADR. The owner’s portion of the payment MUST be received by NADR BEFORE ANY TESTING CAN OCCUR. If an official ID is lost, then I will promptly replace it with another official ID and update my records immediately on the inventory forms and submit to PDA. FLORIDA DEER FARMERS

PERSEVERING IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE MICHAEL

A

By: Gail Veley - Sponsored by SETDA

fter 150 mile an hour winds from Hurricane Michael ripped apart Bear Creek Mine Preserve in Quincy, Florida, Manager Kaleb Ellis spent the better part of two weeks working in overdrive cleaning up from the devastation of the massive Category 5 hurricane when it made landfall on October 10th, 2018. His non-stop efforts included clearing preserve trees, mending fences, rounding up deer and assessing damage. Like others affected by the storm, it was a painstaking and exhausting 24/7 endeavor. Ellis only paused from those efforts briefly, to clear a tree ready to fall on his own house. Close to two weeks later, when he was able to finally exhale and think for just a mere moment only about himself, he drove 20 minutes to an untouched, unravaged part of Quincy to The Laredo Grill, and ordered his favorite meal. Now, with a plate steaming steak fajitas in front of him, he reached down for his favorite comfort food that always included sauteed peppers and onions. However, as he attempted to eat he stopped, his appetite overtaken by emotion. Choking back tears, the reality hit him hard that only 20 minutes from there, houses were flattened. People were homeless. Deer farms suffered massive damage and devastation. That only a mere 20 minutes away, deer farmers had been forced to look into the eyes of some of their beloved deer too injured from this inescapable storm to ever stand up again, and “do right” by them to end their suffering. To say goodbye to deer they knew so well, fed every day and attached dreams to. Among everything that Ellis had faced after the storm, losing deer was by far the roughest. Yet, many more deer survived than

36 PDFA 2022

perished in the storm either by running away or laying down and low and waiting for it to pass. And many deer came right back home the within a day or two looking for breakfast, along with the care and shelter they were accustomed to. “We didn’t lose more than 15 or 20 deer,” said Daniel Bontrager of Bontrager Whitetails in Marianna, Florida. “Our big barn stood intact and had so many trees around it, that it was buffered from the wind. I’m grateful I didn’t lose my house or my lodge. When it’s all over, you can’t count what you lost. You need to count what you have.” Having adequate supplies such as fencing, wood posts, ample chain saws, generators and manpower enabled Florida deer farmers such as Ellis, Bontrager and Jared Deason from Sweetwater Plantation to start work immediately fixing the damage. However, those supplies weren’t available in Florida in the immediate aftermath. Most came by way of preserve owner Jason Edmondson in Alabama. “Jason called us and said, ‘what do you need?” Deason explained. “He brought t-posts, extra fencing, wood posts, fuel and extra chain saws all on his dime. He didn’t charge for delivery. He just said, ‘here are my receipts.’ We need to give a big “shout out” to him for helping us so much.” With the storm now far behind them, Ellis, Bontrager and Deason all feel on a scale of one to 10, that their farms have recovered to the extent of about a “nine.” Remaining work still includes clearing trees and thick brush within the preserve that still remain where the storm put it. Because of initial extensive fence damage due to trees falling on them, all three men share an important lesson learned from Hurricane Michael. “Don’t plant trees closer than 60 feet from your fences

or deer pens,” Bontrager said. “And if you know a storm is coming, go out and take down your shade cloth. That can pull fences right down with it. Yes, it took you a long time to put it up, but you are better off taking it down.” All three men can’t stress enough the need to be prepared with adequate drinking water, generators and other supplies to get by (as well as machinery on stand-by to help clear fallen trees or rebuild fences) should a storm be predicted and subsequently happen. With chances being very slim that a storm the magnitude of Hurricane Michael (the third most powerful in history) will hit Florida anytime in the near future, none of them are planning to move out of Florida either. “I’ve never thought of moving,” Deason said. “Our regulations are better than most states and Florida is a good state for deer farming. Our agencies are so supportive. We have better weather overall year-round. Our hunting season is August through February. And there’s never any snow with Florida hunting.”
