PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY
SunRiver Pottery Studio Cone 10 Kiln The current Kindred Spirits Pottery Studio had its Grand Opening in 2005. Three kilns were bought originally, an electric kiln which was replaced after 16 years, a raqu kiln and a Cone 10 gas kiln. In addition to those, we now have a low fire bisque kiln. The Cone 10 gas kiln is a Geil, Front Loading Fire Brick Lined Kiln. This kiln is our hottest kiln which can fire up to a range of 2,284˚ to 2,381˚ F depending on the results desired. The photographs here represent a huge body of work, all thrown on the wheel and then recently fired in a Cone 10 firing at 2,350˚ F. The load was fired in reduction, meaning that the oxygen environment is reduced at about 1400˚ to 1600˚F. This creates a chemical reaction to the glaze. While the process of firing takes 8-10 hours the items are not cool enough to remove from the kiln until 2 days after firing. Every kiln opening is a surprise, the end of a long process from throwing the pot, bisque firing, glazing and firing again. The results of this firing were stunning which made for very happy potters.
SunRiver Red Hatters It’s soooo hot!!!! I hope everyone has endured our long hot summer, even in Bear Lake with no air conditioning it was hot. Most people are hiding out somewhere cool except we SunRiver Red Hatters! We are kicking up our heels finding things to do to “beat the heat!” We still meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 9am in the “cool” Community Center Ballroom, our group’s social time. Won’t you join us on Tuesday, September 14 at 9:00am for a “hoot” of a time! All our individual chapters come together to visit, laugh, and shop (our favorite thing to do), take care of business, and just hug each other. No better fun comes your way than when you come join in the “chit-chat!” Our current chapters are taking on new members; so, if this sounds like fun to you and you are a SunRiver resident, come on, drop in, look for the “New Table Sign” to learn about us. You can’t miss us; we are in our favorite colors: purple with red hats, a name badge and sporting a gigantic friendly smile! As always, lots of laughs and our Mistress of Mirth gives us a quick story or joke. Special Note: on September 24th the Community Center will have the annual Activities Expo, showing off all the fun clubs here in SunRiver. Of course we will be “strutting our stuff” decked out in purple and red attire to share the fun that Red Hatters enjoy here in SunRiver and all over the world. Upcoming in October the SunRiver Red Hatters will be hosting one of their favorite activities, BUNCO! Keep your eye out for more details but in the meantime save this date: Wednesday, October 20th. All SunRiver Red Hatters and Residents are invited to all the fun. Whew, a lot of info but exciting times happening - come be a part … see you there! Hugs, Queen Jan, SunRiver Red Hatters 2
ELECTRONIC VOTING The trials of 2020 raised questions with regard to how to have an easy, safe, secure way to vote in our upcoming Association election. What is the best way to enable 2308 homeowners to vote? The pandemic restricted our personal contact with one another due to safety. This has caused us revaluate how we vote to ensure everyone is safe, secure, and confident in our election process. Internet access, Association website usage, social media and email are part of everyday life for the majority of our homeowners. For over 2,000 homeowners, electronic forms of communication work flawlessly. In this year’s nomination process for our elected offices, we’ll take advantage of the weekly emailed newsletter, the monthly Sentinel and the new website to communicate candidate information. You’ll see their photos, bios and their reasons why they are the best candidates. The next step will be Electronic Voting. Many community associations use this option due to convenience, greater accuracy, and—most importantly—safety benefits which eliminates the need for physical attendance. The convenience of online voting, which can be conducted from any location and device with an Internet connection, ensures that we’ll receive maximum votes and a result that more accurately reflects the desires of the community. Digital voting systems are more precise than hand-counting ballots. With in-person voting, there’s the possibility of ballots being misplaced, damaged, or not returned at all, all of which will skew the results and deprive members of their vote. Online voting will not only ensure that every vote is counted, but it will also allow results to be tallied almost instantaneously. Digital voting is more cost effective than in-person voting because of costs associated with designing, printing, and distributing the ballots. With an online system, there is an initial cost for the software, but there are usually no costs after original setup regardless of how many votes are conducted or how many members participate. For those members who have no electronic access or are technology challenged, we can offer them support via access to help at the Community Center. As you can see from the chart, choosing Electronic Voting offers members convenience and safety, it will save money on supplies and manpower, it will save time, it is safe and accurate, as well as environmentally friendly. This is a good option for SunRiver and Utah laws and Governing Documents permit electronic voting.

It’s exciting as we head into some cooler weather. I just love the fall
season! One of the greatest parts about getting out of the heat, is we can head back outside to have outdoor events! Look for more outdoor concerts as soon as the golf course gets done with their overseed. We thank the SunRiver Golf Course for allowing us to use the outdoor stage again for the fall season.
ROCK DOX ARE BACK!
A Resident favorite, the Rock Dox band will be back to play for SunRiver on Sept. 30th. This concert will sell out quickly, so don’t hesitate to purchase your tickets. Hiking
As I was preparing this article, I came across a site called “Nature and Nosh” that listed 10 reasons to hike in an article they titled,”10 Reasons Hiking is good For Your Soul (And Why You Should Start Hiking Today!).” I thought I would share the first 5 with you this month and the last 5 next month. 1. Hiking clears the mind and reduces stress - Our lives are busier than ever. Nine to five jobs, full social calendars and everyday life admin is enough to keep us at a permanent level of stress below the surface. Going for a hike reduces your blood pressure and cortisol levels producing a calming effect only nature can offer - over and above the benefits of exercise alone. 2. Hiking makes us happier - Getting out into nature decreases what psychologists call ‘rumination,’ which are negative thought patterns that play over and over in our heads such as dwelling on embarrassing or disappointing moments or thinking about everything we think is wrong with our lives. Never underestimate the ‘happiness effect’ of being outdoors. 3. Hiking improves sleep quality - Walking or climbing over uneven terrain uses 28% more energy than walking over flat ground. You are also removing all the new age stimuli that we often expose ourselves to throughout the day and right before bedtime (phones, computers, TV’s and the like). The result? Better sleep! 4. Improve your memory through hiking - Studies have shown that people who regularly spend time in natural settings, hiking or otherwise, have improved memory and recollection. So if you’re rubbish at sudoku like me, just grab your boots and hit the track! 5. Hiking reduces anxiety and depression - Associated with the benefits of lowering stress levels, hiking has been proven to reduce anxiety by quietening the mind and allowing you to zone in on your breathing to a part meditative state. For natural stress relief and an instant mood boost, head outdoors.
4
I hope this has inspired you to join us for a hike! We have four great hikes scheduled in September. You can find the hike descriptions and start times at the sunrivertoday.com website on the Hiking page. Check them out then come and join us out on the trail!
RESIDENT INTEREST STORY
RICHARD & ANITA CHURCH SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW By: Brittany Tastad Rich was born and raised in southern Minnesota; Rich was first married just out of high school but tragically lost his wife to a DUI accident. He soon met a woman from Utah through work and moved to Salt Lake City, where they were married and lived for 22 years. She passed away in 1996. Anita lived her entire life in Salt Lake City. Never married and had given up on ever finding that special someone. Anita and Rich both worked for the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office in the Jail – Anita as a civilian clerk and Rich as a sworn officer. They love to initiate conversations with, “Well, we met in Jail…”. It makes a good ice breaker and is true. Due to their assignments, Rich gave Anita a disciplinary writeup for a minor infraction in her duties. Although he was instantly drawn to her sparkling eyes and beautiful smile, she didn’t like him at all, mostly because she thought he was a computer nerd with weird eating habits. Rich’s wife died unexpectedly in April of 1996. As Anita was driving to work on the day of the funeral, she heard a voice say, “You need to go see Rich.” She went to the funeral home with a coworker. She had never seen his wife or kids before but bravely went through the line. When she got to Rich, she hugged him and said, “I’ll be there for you.” As soon as they touched, sparks flew between them. After a month, Rich returned to work and asked Anita out on a date. She insisted that she didn’t want to date anyone from work, due to some previous relationship disasters, but he persisted. He purchased a brand-new Cadillac for their first date, but she would have none of that! She insisted on driving her own car over to his house so that she could leave if it didn’t work out. After dating for about ten weeks, it was early August (Anita’s birthday), and he decided to do something special for her birthday. Both of Rich’s children from his second wife worked for the Ogden Raptors AAA baseball team so it was common for them to attend the games together. They never treated her as a stepparent and insisted on calling her Mom from Day One. Rich and Anita invited some family and friends to attend the game that night, although only a couple of people knew what was coming. The announcer called for Rich to come down and throw out the first pitch of the game. He brought a reluctant Anita along with him and headed for the pitcher’s mound. But before he could throw the ball, the announcer stopped him by saying that we couldn’t start yet because there was an airplane over the field and FAA regulations required the air space be clear before we could start. As they waited, somewhat impatiently, five skydivers jumped out of the plane and began spiraling down. The announcer kept up his banter over the P.A. system with tidbits such as, “We don’t know what’s going on,” “It’s not a holiday,” “We’re certainly not paying for this,” and finally, “Maybe they’re just trying to sneak into the ballpark without buying a ticket.” When the final skydiver landed, he unzipped his jumpsuit and handed Rich a small box that he had given him five hours previously and walked to Anita, who by now was standing on home plate. He bent his knee and proposed in front of 1,829 fans. Thank goodness she said Yes! After their kiss, the players had all lined up on the first and third base lines and each gave Anita a long-stemmed red rose and a hug. She was holding a total of 3 dozen roses. It looked like a sheaf of wheat in her arms! The tears were streaming down her face and Rich thought it was because she was happy. Nope. She was allergic to roses! After completing their careers with the Sheriff’s Office (thirty years for Rich and 24 for Anita), they were finally ready to retire. Since Anita disliked snow and cold, she thought St. George would be the place to go. After going on vacation to attend Tuacahn and visit friends who were living here, they toured SunRiver and realized that this was indeed the perfect place. They plunked down their cash and built a home, completing the move in early 2018. It has been a wonderful life so far and they are just as much in love now as they were when they first met in Jail. If only they’d met earlier, they could have loved longer. Since settling here, they have been active in pickleball, pottery, bocce ball, cornhole, dance lessons (and many dance events), water volleyball, and learning how to entertain friends at home.

RESIDENT SERVICE COMMITTEE Take Medicare For All It’s Worth On Thursday, September 16th at 2:00 PM, the Resident Services Committee is sponsoring a seminar titled, “Medicare Hidden Resources and Benefits.” This seminar features Randy Farish, who is back by popular demand from last year. Tom Everett, of Five Counties Association of Governments will also be back again this year to inform Residents of resources. The most important insurance question for us in SunRiver is this: “Why leave benefit dollars on the table?” It’s easy to do if you don’t understand where those benefits may be hidden in such a complex insurance puzzle. In this seminar, Randy points out those hard-to-find benefits you may deserve but may not be aware of. For additional information on this seminar, call Anne Edwards at 951-522-6208, or contact her at: eaedwards47@yahoo.com

WALK WITH A DOC®
Resident Services Committee - Put On Those Walking Shoes
Our first Walk With A Doc (WWAD) is coming up September 24th. It’s a chance for you to get out and breathe in some of nature’s finest air. If you came to our initial meeting on August 24th, you know how easy this works: 1. Just show up at 9:00 AM in the Community Center 2. Listen to a 10-minute talk from a local physician 3. Determine how long you want to walk 4. Walk with a Doc as long (or short) as you wish That’s how easy it is. Come. Walk at your own speed. Return home refreshed. While you’re walking you can ask your health questions to the doctor walking beside you. Two birds with one stone, so to speak. Those of you with WWAD T-shirts, slip them on and come show them off. This can be your own little protest showing for a healthier, happier SunRiver. The SunRiver/Southern St. George “Walk With A Doc” program has been underwritten by the Southern Utah Senior Foundation. For more information, call Pat Ault at 435-817-0644, or Anne Edwards at 951-522-6208.
The Activity Expo
On September 24th (same day as Walk With A Doc) from 9am – 12pm, the Resident Services Committee will have a booth at the Activity Expo in the Community Center Ballroom. Come see what they, and we, have to offer residents here in SunRiver. So, on the 24th of September, plan to take a stroll with a physician in the morning, then stroll through the Ballroom to find out what fun things are happening right here in your own back yard.

PREPAREDNESS COMMITTEE The members of CERT talk about and train for various emergency events. One such emergency is a pandemic. The good news is we have a number of actions available or in place to deal with various pandemic situations. The bad news is this specific pandemic situation isn’t one of them. However, doing some of the basic preparation activities such as having basic emergency supplies and cash on hand and developing self-sufficiency skills have been at least somewhat helpful in weathering the health and social constraints we are under. Hopefully before too long we may get back to at least a new normal. On the preparedness website https://do1thing.com, which lists preparedness activities for each month, for August it says: It takes more than Police, Fire and EMS to respond to a disaster. It takes people who are committed to neighborhoods, churches, schools and volunteer organizations. When people are willing to work together for the good of others, communities are stronger. People who are involved are the key to a disaster resilient community. They are willing and able to look out for themselves and others. A resilient community is one that can withstand a disaster and get back to normal quickly (even if normal isn’t the same as it was before). One of the activities the website suggests is to connect with an isolated person in your neighborhood or start a neighborhood organization. Right now, that is probably a telephone call or a socially distanced conversation over the fence or across the street, but it is still worthwhile and likely it will be fun. We all have “cabin fever!” Make someone’s day, possibly even your own, reach out to someone. The Washington County Emergency Preparedness office periodically offers CERT training classes either on line or in person. Contact: Tiffany Martineau @ tiffany.martineau@washco.utah.gov or call 435-634-5734.

COMPUTER CLUB
Understanding the Medicare Process
The Computer Club is happy to announce the return of classes designed to provide the how, where and what when researching your Medicare options. Before you jump on your computer and begin your research, this class will help guide the process. These classes are about the research process and individual plans will not be discussed. Classes will be offered on September 8th for everyone, and September 10th for Veterans. These classes are designed to help you understand what is available, provide general information about the process and offer suggestions on where to begin. The first session will include Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. We’ll be covering the current program, in a Medicare Advantage Plan, or an independent Plan. We’ll cover how the deductible works, and ways to control it. Questions like “are my drugs covered or not?” “What are quantity limits, what are prior approvals and what is step therapy for exceptions?” We’ll show you how to do your research for your specific meds, in or out of a Medicare Advantage Plan. The second session will zero in on Veterans, whether they’re in the VA Healthcare System or not. What are the steps to enrolling if not already enrolled? How a Medicare Advantage Plan and the VA Healthcare system can work in conjunction with each other. Be prepared for the ADVERTISING OVERLOAD you will receive during the annual enrollment period, which starts October 15, 2021, and ends December 7, 2021 for 2022 plans. Both sessions will end with a question-and-answer session to address your concern and confusion dealing with Medicare. Everyone is welcome but space is limited so please go to the Computer Club page on the web site to RSVP for this event.
Announcing the 2022 Computer Club Calendar and Photo Search The SunRiver Computer Club will again be publishing a Photo Calendar for 2022 which will go on sale to the SunRiver Community this October. If you are not a member and would like to submit photos, see “News & Updates” on the Club web page for information. All images submitted must be digital .jpeg files and in landscape orientation (width must be greater than height). Standard 4 to 3 or 3 to 2 aspect ratios are preferred. Individuals may submit up to 6 images. Photos with unique seasonal interest, e.g., spring, summer, fall, winter, holiday, are encouraged to help us add variety to the final calendar. If you have any photos you wish to submit for consideration, please send them to Larry Nielsen at packman@sunrivertoday.com no later than September 12th. 13

SCIENCE CLUB - LEEDS, SILVER AND PINE VALLEY MOUNTAIN St. George lies near the border of three distinct geographic regions, the Colorado Plateau, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert. Being flanked by 3 regions, you might suspect we have a complex local natural history. We do! Three local features beg for an explanation: Pine Valley Mountain, the local cinder cones and lava flows, and the silver deposits at Leeds.
WESTERN DANCERS The Western Dancers recently performed their patriotic routine, “This Land is Your Land” at The Haven Assisted Living Home in Hurricane in honor of Pioneer Day. The audience had fun singing along as we performed! The dancers will be performing new routines at The Meadows Assisted Living Home this month along with the Tap Stars and Jazz Dancers. Classes are on Wednesdays at 1pm in Fitness Room #1. New dancers are always welcome. For more information on classes or to schedule a performance for your party or event email Alice Jégou-Black (pictured in the middle) at adjegou@live.com or call 435-3758309.
Allow Ron Smith to guide you through time and see how Pine Valley Mountain is a volcano that nearly formed, but never fully came to life; yet interior lava, underground water, and high pressure worked to form a unique signature of silver deposits at Leeds. While Pine Valley Mountain can be considered a volcano that failed; the Veyo volcano, plus the lava flows at Entrada and at our old airport, show a strong volcanic presence in recent geologic times. Just as St. George has a cherished human history, we also have a cherished natural history. This program is inspired by a presentation made by Marc Deshowitz two years ago. He doesn’t like to give repeat performances, so Ron Smith will be a member of a geology “relay team” that passes information about our local geology to you. Our program begins at 5:30pm in the Ballroom on Tuesday, September 14th. You must purchase tickets in advance. Popcorn tickets cost $1. Chicken Wrap tickets cost $5. Doors open at 5:00pm and the presentation begins at 5:30pm. We’ll also have a free Zoom program on Thursday, September 16th. The Zoom program is free. It begins promptly at 5:00 PM.
We will miss you…. Our deepest sympathies are with the families and friends of
Judy Smith
