Maracaibo Ciudad Cultural

2013-2014 | Maracaibo Cultural City.

Cultural recreational entertainment center, located at the second stage of the Vereda Lake Park. B. Arch Thesis | Profs. Arch. Ernesto Nones/ Dr. Rafael Gonzalez Maracaibo is the second largest city in Venezuela, with a large population, but there is a lack of spaces and places that are intended for cultural enjoyment, social interaction, contact with nature and mostly for recreation, this makes the quality of life of its inhabitants to be diminished. However, a solution that manages to project a center that can accommodate different types of recreation is proposed. Criteria The main criteria used to achieve these spaces was to maintain direct contact with nature, which helps to raise awareness with the environment, and create areas and activities that can be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, sex or socio-economic class.

The Problem Lack of public green areas Maracaibo has less than 1m2 of public green space per habitant, this is a crucial problem of the city.

Only physical activities / sports Maracaibo’s parks and green areas, only offer outdoors activities (sports related), which is not bad, but it is also important its habitants have different types of recreational activities.

Cultural equals pricey >> All 5 urban parks of the city of Maracaibo, which represent less than 1m2 / inhabitant of green areas.

Cultural activities costs money, and can be very expensive, so the average citizen can’t afford them.

The Solution Generate more public green areas There are a lot of open spaces in Maracaibo that haven’t been developed, or are simply abandoned by the government.

Create cultural spaces Invest, generate, redesign, other recreational activities and include new cultural areas.

Free cultural environments Supported by the government, offer cultural activities that all people can enjoy them at low or no cost.

Volume and shape Visuals The building is oriented towards the lake, also, in the facades, curtain wall is used to allow visuals even within modules and create internal and external exchanges. a.

Breaking the Shape In order to give the building permeability, the volume is divided in 4 modules with different uses, to create internal open spaces that allow the entry of natural ventilation and give more comfort to the user.

Vegetation Vegetation plays a key role in the building, having internal open spaces with great heights allows the integration of trees to the building, the goal is that the transition between the park and building is almost imperceptible to the user. b.

Accessibility There are different access to the complex both vehicular and pedestrian. Ramps are located at all entrances to facilitate access to all people. In addition, there is a special access for public transportation.

Outdoor areas and activities Several activities are proposed for outdoor areas to allow the user to recreate inside and outside the center. Among them we have an area of restaurants, a market, bleachers with projection area and several plazas.

Spaces The aim was to design a center with different areas for recreation with a cultural approach.

>> View of the cafe and terrace.

The library is the main area of the center, its connection with the terrace allows interaction between cultural, intellectual and recreational. It has different spaces for users to relate, both internal and external, to encourage recreation. The main entrance of the complex is open with great heights to permit a direct connection to the park, making a spontaneous transition area that the user does not notice that is coming out of the park and entering into a building and thereby integrate the natural with artificial. In the northeast facade, is located a screen that allows users outside the complex, in the park areas, see what goes on inside the center, if a band or a play are performing in the auditorium it can be seen from outside.

Bella Suites 72 2012 C | Housing workshop 3

The visuals were an important factor in the design making process, the building faces Maracaibo’s lake.

Bella Suites 72 is located in one of the most important avenues of Maracaibo. In front of ‘‘El Angel’s’’ Plaza.

Also it was necessary to continue with the commercial and entertainment zone of Bella Vista Avenue, so in order to achieve that, 5 commercial shops and a recreational area with a boulevard, were designed at the ground floor to connect with the pedestrians.

The Residence is composed by: two main buildings and five commercial shops of 120 m2 each. The first building consist of 34 apartments, 2 per floor. Apt A has 150m2, and Apt B has 180 m2. The second building has 45 single - studio apartments. With an open space concept, between 55m2 and 75m2 each apartment.

Muebles Woodstock 2013 A | Elective: Interior Design

Design and assembly of five furniture pieces inspired in the Woodstock movement and the 60’s. Woodstock was a 3-day music and art festival, and was one of the most important and famous rock and hippie festivals of the history. For the design we wanted to transmit the psychedelic and the wild life carried among the hippies at Woodstock. The materials were the key piece in the design. Wood is the center piece, accompanied by vibrant and colorful fabrics.

Guayana BCV Headquarters proposal 2014-2015 | Work projects

Design proposal for the BCV headquarters in Puerto Ordaz, VE. The challenge was to design a center that was inspired by Venezuela, in addition to this, the complex must only use local materials. Additional to the bank's headquarters, a museum, an auditorium and area of workshops and activities for the public were included in the complex.

07

>> Front view of the complex.

The complex is divided into 2 buildings, separating the administrative part of the central bank from the museum and classrooms for workshops. The central idea focus on the Macizo Guayanes and its brownish and copperish colors. CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROJECT For this project I was the only draftsman and developer of the idea from the first stages of the form and design to the final stage of the proposal. That includes 3D modelling, rendering and post-production, also all plan drawings and the final poster proposal design.

Phase 2 Offices building The second building is an office tower, with more than 15 floors with an open offices concept. Phase 3 Cultural The cultural building has a library, gallery museum and an auditorium.

08

Musical development center is a music school, located at the university city in Maracaibo, VE. The complex is divided into 2 modules: The first is the music school and the second is an Auditorium. The School is designed for more than 2000 students and has classrooms with sound isolation. It also has individual rehearsal areas and recording rooms. The complete lot has about 20.000 square meters.

09

>> a. lobby entrance (internal view)

On the facades we can highlight 2 materials, curtain wall and concrete. Also to protect and to give dynamism there were placed rectangular sunscreens with different colors, these give a juvenile and colorful appearance to the facade. Within the school, spaces are created with double and triple heights with the purpose of giving a feeling of amplitude to the users inside the building.
