Welcome from the Hoyt’s!

Spring is in the air, and once again preparations are underway for an enjoyable summer season. A week of temperatures in the 80’s at the end of March unfortunately brought King Pine’s 50th season to an early end, however it gave the rest of our resorts a jump start on spring improvements and upgrades.

The Mill was re-sided and solar panels were installed on the roof to heat the pool water. As always, room upgrades and new paint are in process throughout Purity Spring. A number of rooms at King Pine received bathroom touchups with new tile and vanities. Rooms at The Inn and Millbrook received new paint and décor, and almost all of the resort is now comfortably sleeping on pillow-top mattresses. (continued on page 2)

(continued from page 1) Steven Hoyt has been doing bike trail maintenance around Purity Spring; widening trails, cutting new single track and adding bridges to make mud crossings more fun. Susie Hoyt has been busy in the gardens and spring flowers are out in abundance. Remember to check with Susie in the fall if you want any of our perennial splits. Designs are being made for shade structures at the pools at Danforth Bay and The Bluffs, which will also double as the support structure for solar panels to heat the pools in the future. The Bluffs welcomed new sites along Lincoln Lane and Madison Avenue and final designs are being approved for future sites on Owl’s Head Road.

WHAT’S NEW… AT THE MILL THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY GYMNASTICS CENTER LOVES KING PINE!

Things have been very busy at The Mill! Since last fall, we have increased the size of both the sitting area and the Blue Heron Gift Shop, redone The Mill office and laid down new carpet to complete the look.

Each year for the past twenty years between thirty and one hundred fun-loving gymnasts from Cumberland County Gymnastics Center (CCGC), their family and friends meet at King Pine for an exciting day of outdoor winter fun. Young or old, novice or expert, brave or timid, it matters little. Fun, fitness, family and friends make the day. This year seven members of the group had also been with us twenty years ago on the very first CCGC King Pine Family Day.

With more space in the gift shop, we have been able to rearrange the space and add a greater variety of items for you, our guests. Aqua Zumba, has been added to The Mill indoor pool’s programs and has been a huge hit with the pool and fitness center members. We will be offering an additional morning class this summer and hope resort guests will join in for an exhilirating workout with lots of laughs. A few new therapists have been added to our massage and reiki staff, which means you can enjoy some relaxing body treatments this summer.

With all of these additions we are excited to share what’s new, so please stop by The Mill when you arrive to experience the changes.

... FROM THE PSR KITCHEN low heat. Add chocolate and whisk until smooth. • Carefully whisk sugar syrup into chocolate and allow to cool slightly. Whisk eggs into chocolate mixture and blend until smooth. Pour batter into prepared pan. • Place cake pan into large roasting pan and add enough hot water to roasting pan to come halfway up the side of cake pan. • Bake cake about 50 minutes or until the center no longer moves when pan is jiggled a little bit. Remove cake pan from water bath, set on cooling rack. Cool completely before removing cake from pan. Run sharp paring knife along edge of pan before removing. • Make the ganache by bringing cream to boil. Place the semisweet chocolate in bowl of mixer. Pour hot cream over chocolate and blend until smooth. At this point, you can pour ganache over cake, or continue whipping ganache until it thickens like frosting. Pipe rosettes onto cake. Serve with whipped cream & shaved chocolate.

The staff at King Pine most likely were gymnasts as youngsters themselves for they always bend over backwards to be sure the day is all that anyone can hope for. Will we do it all again next year? Stay tuned!

CAMP WAMPINEAUK

The spirit still lives in the valley Just a few years after Camp Tohkomeupog for boys was opened, Ellen Hoyt opened Camp Wampineauk for girls. From 1934 to 1977, hundreds of girls spent their summers on the shores of Purity Lake building friendships and learning about the land and wildlife. Camp Wampineauk may be closed but the spirit still lives in the valley. Six ladies in these pictures now have homes in East Madison. Many others live in nearby communities. One Wampineauk camper vacations every winter at Purity Spring and King Pine with her husband and two sons. Many visit Purity Spring with their families during the summer season and some attend Family Camp during the end of August to partake in traditional camp activities that remind them so much of their days at Wampineauk.

Recognize anyone in this 1967 camp photo? Many are members of the camp Facebook group. Look it up!

The Girls Waterfront no longer exists, but the area can be found on the Audubon Property side of dam.

In the early 1970’s, campers used a clay court behind the Senior House at the start of Horseleg Hill Road.

The older campers made this hammock out of twine for the younger girls.

UPDATES AT THE BLUFFS

There are several new and exciting projects underway at The Bluffs this year. Four additional sites have been completed at the end of Madison Avenue and are already occupied. Additional sites at the end of Lincoln Lane are nearing completion and a number of sites throughout the park that needed additional work are also close to being finished. Final designs are almost done for Owl’s Head Road. If you are interested in seeing the proposed layout, a copy of the plans can be viewed in the Seasonal Office. Construction could begin as soon as this fall or next spring.

We have had a number of requests for additional shade by the pools. In response, construction of a shade structure between the two large pools located behind the Depot at Danforth Bay will begin in the next two weeks. This will not only provide needed shade, but will also serve as a support for a solar collection system to heat the pools, which we hope to install next spring. Representing Purity Spring Resort, the Tohkomeupog Alumni Association and the Mount Washington Valley community, these enthusiastic “friendly ghosts” created a uniquely fun, fantastical experience for trick-or-treaters. That first year, despite relentlessly heavy rains, about 300 people turned out to explore the haunted pathways of Halloween Town. In 2010, under starry skies, numbers soared to about 1,200 visitors. Last year, we proudly welcomed a conservative estimate of 2,000 individuals through the gates of Halloween Town. The response to this event has been absolutely incredible! One simple explanation for this dramatic surge of popularity is the fact is that the traditional ability to ‘trick-or-treat’ is somewhat limited in our community. In many areas, houses are few and far between. By following the “Trick-or-Treat Trail”, kids are able to visit a series of theatrically transformed cabins in the search for treats, and adventure. It is a safe, entertaining way for kids from throughout the Mount Washington Valley, and beyond, to celebrate the spirit of this holiday.

BEHIND THE SCENES FUNDRAISING & ITS IMPORTANCE

In terms of The Laura Foundation, Halloween Town serves two purposes. For one, we use the event to raise awareness about our existence… and also, of course, about our mission, which focuses on individuals living with autism and

epilepsy. For more information, check out www.thelaurafoundation.org.
