june 2011 DID YOU KNOW? Around the turn of the 19th century, a small community grows with the development of a mill on the southern end of Purity Lake. By 1804, the mill becomes a bustling center of activity, and the small village of East Madison is born.
1850’s: Drawn back to the valley from Brooklyn, NY, Nicholas Blaisdell and his wife Martha Hood, take over daily operations of the now 50 year-old Blaisdell Mill. 1860’s: Some years later, Martha’s sister Mercy Hood and her husband Edward Eaton Hoyt Sr. visit the couple in their country home.

july 2011 DID YOU KNOW? Edward Eaton Hoyt Sr., a very successful auctioneer, first moved to the valley in the 1870’s, drawn by the allure of the valley and crystal clear waters of Purity Lake.
1870’s: Drawn by his entrepreneurial eye, Edward Eaton Hoyt Sr. moves to the valley and would later begin bottling and shipping spring water. 1892: Purity Spring water wins medals of SUPERIORITY in New York and Boston. Five noted chemists pronounce the water the purest they have ever analyzed.

1903: Edward Hoyt Sr. passes away leaving Edward Hoyt Jr. the valley property. 1905: Edward Hoyt Jr. marries Luella Gertrude Keith and has 2 children: Ellen Mercy Hoyt (1907) and E. Milton Hoyt (1911)

september 2011 DID YOU KNOW? There used to be a “rec barn” to the left of the main Inn DIDinYOU KNOW? and front of the current loft. As the name implies, this Early guests at Purity Spring in tents was where youstaying would find ping pong, andstayed other activities. on platforms built on the shores of the lake. They would later be replaced by lakeside bungalows.
1911: The Hoyt Family begins to welcome guests into their lakeside home at “The Inn”, then called “Purity Spring Mountain Inn” 1929: Edward Milton Hoyt, better known as “Milt”, graduates high school and begins helping full-time at The Inn.

october 2011 DID YOU KNOW? Milt Hoyt was born in the Spring Grove Cottage on Horseleg Hill Rd in 1911. You can still see the cellar holes to this day, along, with other artifacts.
Early 1930’s: As the “Great Depression” begins, business at The Inn declines. Even though“land poor” Edward Jr. declines numerous offers to purchase his land. 1932: The “Purity Spring Camp for Boys” begins and would later (1935) become known as “Camp Tohkomeupog” - a rough translation for “spring water”.

november 2011 DID YOU KNOW? The East Madison, NH post office used to be located at Purity Spring! That’s right ... Room 141. You can see actual artifacts from the post office at The Mill today.
1934: Ellen Hoyt establishes “Camp Wampineauk” for girls, a rough native indian translation for “pure water”. 1937-1939: Milt returns to school and receives an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering and a masters degree in education.

december 2011 DID YOU KNOW? In the late 1930’s, Milt Hoyt cleared some trees from a hill near The Inn. He then constructed a rope tow which was powered by a Model T truck! Ski Camp would soon follow.
1938: Milt Hoyt clears trees from from a hill near The Inn and begins to set up rope tows for skiing 1939: Milt Hoyt establishes overnight ski camps for boys and girls, during school vacation weeks, which is still in existence today

january 2012 DID YOU KNOW? King George and his men set out in New England to find large pines to be used as masts on ships in his royal navy. Many of those large pines were found near Purity Spring... hence the name “King Pine” .
Early 1940’s: Sporting fields at Tohkomeupog turned into “Victory Gardens” to support the war efforts. Early 1940’s: Ellen Hoyt hires Frances Hayden as camp counselor. A romance evolves between Milt and Fran, eventually leading to marriage.

february 2012 DID YOU KNOW? After retiring from a teaching position in West Hartford, CT, Milt Hoyt moved back to East Madison with his family to devote more of his time to Purity Spring.
1944: Milt retires from teaching in CT to develop the Resort full time. Milt, Fran and children move into the Blaisdell Cottage, now known as “Millbrook” 1952: Edward Jr. passes away leaving care of the valley lands to Milt & Ellen

march 2012 DID YOU KNOW? The original name of the mountain we now know as King Pine Ski Area was Betsy Mountain. Four rope tows were operated before King Pine Ski Area even opened.
1962: With ski areas popping up throughout New Hampshire, Milt opens King Pine Ski Area with 3 trails and a double chair lift. 1964/65: To better service beginner skiers, a J-Bar is installed next to the double chairlift.

april 2012 DID YOU KNOW? “Lobster Island” was not always an island. It used to be called “Point of Pines”. In 1956, there was a hurricane that cleared many of the trees off the center of the Island.
1977: Ellen Hoyt Gillard retires as camp director and Camp Wampineauk closes down 1980: A strong storm sweeps through the valley, taking down the last of the “King Pine” trees in the King Pine parking lot.

may 2012 DID YOU KNOW? A family that lived where Island View condos are located today, were struck by hard times. Each child had one pair of shoes which would only be worn to church or school. The rest of the time they would be barefoot.
1987: King Pine celebrates its 25th anniversary with an expanded base lodge, snowmaking, night skiing and a new triple chairlift. 1988/1989: Milt Hoyt passes suddenly and one year later his sister Ellen Hoyt passes bringing closure to the 3rd generation.

june 2012 DID YOU KNOW? Waterskiing was only offered to the boys at Camp Tohkomeupog but some of the female counselors from Camp Wampineauk were invited on occasion. No ill feelings from the girls since they had a full schedule of fun activities.
1989: Trails around Purity Lake, used primarily as snowmobile trails since 1976, are now exclusively used as cross-country trails. 1989: The Tohko Dome is built across from King Pine, offering ice skating, basketball and a rock climbing wall.

july 2012 DID YOU KNOW? Also known as “ No Bottom Pond�, Purity has one of only the few kettle holes remaining in the state. A kettle hole is created when a piece of glacier is left behind, creating a large hole that fills with the water from the melting ice.
1992: The old Blaisdell Mill is torn down and replaced with a beautiful pool and fitness center and three guest rooms overlooking Purity Lake. 1996: Kathy Hoyt passes leaving her siblings - Ted, Laura, Robert (Bob) and Susan - all working to continue the Hoyt tradition.

august 2012 DID YOU KNOW? In an early brochure (c. 1918), the resort was referred to as “Purity Spring Mountain Park”. The tagline used was “1000 Acres of Forest, Field and Lake”.
1998/99: Snowtubing is added to growing list of attractions, using current the J-bar lift as tow. 2000: The Hoyt Family purchases about 400 acres in Freedom, NH, including the once popular “Shawtown Campground” on Danforth Bay.

september 2012 DID YOU KNOW? It is rumored that the clearing at Sunset Beach was an experiment with dynamite by Milt Hoyt and Dick Wilcox. Apparently, stumps were flying everywhere!

october 2012 DID YOU KNOW? The old mill at Purity Spring had been used as a lumber mill, apple cider mill, shingle mill and grist mill. The mill reacted to what ever the economy needed.
2004: Frances Hayden Hoyt, remembered fondly as “Lady of the Valley”, passes away. 2006: The Bluffs RV Resort, rental sites for active adults age 50+, opens adjacent to Danforth Bay

november 2012 DID YOU KNOW? Upon her passing, Ellen Hoyt Gillard left 160 acres, including that which was Camp Wampineauk, to be protected by the NH Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary.
2008: Laura Ellen Hoyt Mahoney, eldest daughter of Milt and Fran, passes away. The creation of the Laura Foundation for Autism & Epilepsy soon follows. , Kathy, Susan Hoyt Robert, Ted, Fran, Milt, Laura, Jack (Mahoney)

december 2012 DID YOU KNOW? Very little snow fell in the region during the 1979/80 season. Snowfall was so light that snow was scraped from the lake and fields and brought to the hill for skiing. The next season, snowmaking was installed on King Pine.
