EDUCATION PROJECTS

THE SCHOOL OF DESIGN

Master’s project 2020 [with distinction] Location: Elizabeth Quay, CBD, Perth Program: Education Unit Teacher: Kukame and Kristen from Woods Bagot The School of Design generates a new civic space for Perth. It is an asymmetrically balanced design with two triangular blocks, a floating structure made of glass, steel, and concrete. In the daytime, it is almost transparent from some angles. At night, it is a lantern with metal louvers that look like patterns. Studio life is on show, an attractive atmosphere can be seen from the outside and invites curiosity. The SoD is also inspired by the typical Australian house space layout. However, the space of the school is arranged vertically with a common garden in front, contributing green values to urban space. The functional block is placed above with landscaped gardens and atriums interwove. Meanwhile, roof-top gardens are dedicated for the school, where occupants can gather, discuss or stroll among the botanical gardens under the shadow of the solar panels. Also, a place urban and landscape students can experiment with pavilions and bio-based materials. Located in an area with high construction density and a busy public transport system in a narrow and modest site. The site has some adverse and limited views by Perth exhibition center and the surrounding high-rise buildings, but there are also stunning landscape views. Therefore, blocks of the building are oriented to have views of beautiful landscapes. The geometry of the building is shaped in a dynamic and porous form for an attractive appearance to enhance community connectivity. The plaza floor is extended to the east and west without affecting the decades-old trees in these areas. It is like a symbiotic entity, connecting the gardens of the ferry, the exhibition center, and the southern meadow, reactivating the surrounding areas more vividly. An outstanding feature compared to most other universities of architecture is that the exhibition space is located on the first floor, the plaza floor, so visitors can easily access it from all directions. A place students could actively contribute to the culture of the city, showcase their artworks with the public and vision to the world. In addition, most of the remaining area of the plaza is considered as a common garden, where visitors can immerse themselves in nature. Outdoor exhibitions, art performances, and public activities will take place here, honoring the culture of the area while helping people understand the SoD’s values. The ground floor is the 24/7 mixed-use activity hub, incubator, and commercial nodes to provide food and beverage. The existing structure of the infrastructure of the railway station below is kept almost intact to reduce renovation and labor costs. The height of the building harmonizes with the building context and the roof slopes gently to the south to provide panoramic views of the Swan River and traps the cool breeze blowing from the south. SoD is not just a school but would be a second home where students wish to explore art and architecture.

DELIVERING A TRULY SUSTAINABLE BUILDING The building is thought of as a self-sustaining entity, which generates its own energy through solar panels. The external perforated facade skin is automatically rotated by sensors to reflect the path of the sun. Natural and artificial lighting will be combined in classroom spaces to provide high-quality illumination and visual comfort, lowing energy consumption. The aim is to achieve a balance between costs, aesthetics, and function. Rainwater and wastewater are collected and recycled to save water resource. 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09

CIRCULAR HOUSE Master’s project 2020 [with high distinction] Location: 62 Matlock street, WA Program: Private House Unit Teacher: Nathan Steele from Steelehouse Architecture This unit describes the respective stages through which a medium scale architectural project progresses. Beginning with pre-design, the unit introduces topics including indigenous land laws, the architectclient agreement, site analysis and consultation with authorities, before moving into the requirements for schematic design, design development and contract documentation. The project is required to develop and design the Alterations and Additions to an existing suburban residence. The Clients are a young couple planning to have 2 children. The design is to overcome the limitations of the current interwar bungalow and provide a suitable home for the remainder of the years raising their children. Key design considerations are provision for inspiring and compelling living spaces. Best utilisation of the site orientation to allow natural lighting and ventilation principles. Relationship and response to the existing structure.

THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS Bachelor project 2012 [with distinction] Location: Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Program: Cultural The project is a contemporary art museum, situated in Thanh Da new urban area on the edge of Ho Chi Minh City with main functions such as ecological parks, tourism, culture, recreational and residential areas. Nowadays, few people in the country have a preference for visiting museums in order to learn conventions, cultures, history, and art, which can be explained that museums are pragmatic buildings with less attractive shapes and lack of visually engaging activities. Besides, merely a quarter of Ho Chi Minh City area is covered by greenery, contributing to air pollution. The new museum building was designed with dynamically and simply stacked boxes to harmonize with the park and communicate with the surrounding urban area. The gardens are located on top of the vertically stacked spaces, which not only improves the microclimate by using natural ventilation and daylight for every club and administrative room, but helps the outdoor display openings increase visibility and interaction. Therefore, it can attract inhabitants to visit and participate in artistic activities such as concerts, festivals or performances. Being combined with green roofscapes, trees and plants constitute to the addition of green spaces for the locals as well as raising individual awareness in planting and protecting the environment. Furthermore, the design allows visitors to have plentiful opportunity to immerse themselves in nature. The artificial lake in the east of the building is in harmony with the local river, has a spectacular view as well as used to perform water puppet, a traditional folk theater art of Vietnamese culture.

THE UNIVERSITY OF ARCHITECTURE HỌ CHI MINH CITY Bachelor’s Graduation Project 2013 [with distinction] Location: Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Program: Education The site is located in District 9 which is the new urban area of Ho Chi Minh City. The project is the second facility of University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City. The large area of the university formed a dispersed building layout, creating plenty of rest and breathing space for people. The purpose of this work is to create natural and energetic spaces for learning, working and exploring architecture. The project respects its surrounding landscape and neighboring buildings. Overall project layout is organized around a central green space, most functional areas have spectacular views towards the river because there are no high-rise buildings constructed in the south. The artificial lotus ponds combined with the Tac river create unique and poetic water scenery, where the college’s traditional activities are organized and are also a place for students to sketch landscapes, compose and relax. Wind and light can reach all classrooms and offices thanks to the courtyard of each zone. Besides, other architectural and mechanical energy-saving initiatives are comprehensively applied including photovoltaic modules, solar water heating, and green roof as insulation. The building also appreciates the use of low rise architecture, construction methods, and materials available in Vietnam to minimize construction costs.

In the ancient imperial complex of Hue City, Cung Truong Sanh Palace was built in the northwest of Hue Citadel with the initial role of a flower garden, where the Nguyen Dynasty Kings invited their mothers to visit the breathtaking scenery. Later, it was also transformed into a dining place in the life of some Queen Mothers. Architectural models invariably play a crucial role in research. Our team consists of 8 members, selected to model Cung Truong Sanh project for an in-depth insight into Vietnamese architecture in the 18th century.

THE WIND HOUSE

Location: Binh Phuoc Province, Vietnam Year: 2015-2016 Status: completed Program: Private House Build area: 165m2 Involvement: planning design, concept design, construction drawings, detailing, renders and supervision

Binh Phuoc House, built in 2016, is a housing design that seeks to provide green spaces within high-density neighborhoods. Since the client’s family consists of three generations, the challenge is to create sufficient spaces allowing them to interact and communicate with other members. This place has a harsh tropical climate compared to the remaining provinces in Vietnam. In fact, the temperature can drop to 120C in the rainy season and rise up to 400C in the dry season. The central core of the house is a large space with common rooms including the living room, kitchen, the worship room and classroom. This space is arranged along the longitudinal axis of the house, which permits wind and natural light to reach all rooms. Openings also

24

increase visibility and interaction between the family members. Service areas such as bathrooms, stairs and corridors are located in the west of the house to limit heat radiation exposure in the afternoon. Moreover, the roof of house is finished by locally sourced clay roof tiles with the purpose of lowering the cost of materials and constructions. But these files are easy to absorb heat, therefore, the solution with the high central core space of the house helps to reduce the hot air to the common space below. Besides, natural ventilation through large central space will bring these hot gases out of the house via the brick wall behind the house.
