Frank Gehry This is Franks Guggenheim building in Bilbao. Its set in an urban space with a populated city and a lot of urban buildings surrounding it. The building is made out of 33,000 thin titanium sheets that are strong and will hold this building up for centuries. As this is an art exhibition the titanium resembles the stability of the art and the community and city around it. Even though the buildings around it look much different and weaker the Guggenheim makes everything else look 10x better. This building has increased economy around it as tourist are more attracted to this place and I am not surprised why. This is a marvelous piece of architecture, the design is modern it is unique and it really brings attention to the eye, its impossible to not see it.

Frank Gehry Frank is an Architect for humanity, he does not just create a building because it fits there, he creates one because it will benefit humanity in the long run. His architecture comes from a basic start of block. Blocks are a foundation of how he creates a building. Most people place blocks and finish there, but Ghery goes further and inspires all of us. He says “if you know what you are What he means is that its not always the best idea to go in with a plan, you need to be going to do as a building, best chances is that you will not even do it. adaptable and creative with what you do, hence why his architecture is so unique.

Zaha Hadid • This is Zaha’s Serpentine Gallery extension. As looking at the images you can see that the building looks nothing like the extension, but in reality they fit perfectly for some reason. That was Zaha’s intention, to take the simple and liven it up a little. She does this buy adding more personality to the building. That means she blends her building to nature and make it feel more welcoming and calm. The materials used for the roof is a glass fibre-textiles. This material looks almost ceramic and really gives a premium look to it. The legs inside the building are actually the buildings light source, it allows natural light to flow in and brighten the inside plus the fact that the material is white which is very reflective it really makes the building feel warm and part of the outside world.

Zaha Hadid • Zaha visualized architecture in a different way than normal civilians did. She says, “I think architecture is not just about shelter… but it should be able to excite you and calm you, to make you think.” with her style of architecture her quote is really accurate. Her buildings look soothing and look like a delicious desert with the curvature structures. She does this to blend her work with nature. Nature is not as angular as most people imagine, so instead she uses the curvature of desserts and waves that form naturally. She does this to make her buildings calming and make you feel like you are in the outside world.

Le Corbusier

The Notre dame du haut is a modern building from another centuary. This Roman Catholic church is built with detail and smart features such as the window. Depending on what time of the day it is it will show different light patterns inside the building that adds life and nature to it. Also with the addition of the white walls in the interior it makes up as a good light source in the interior. This building is designed to look like it is part of nature. It almost looks like a fungus in the middle of the field. The building is made of basic concrete that are remains of the last chapel that stood there and was destroyed in WII. The purpose for this building was to replace the old chapel, but it doesn’t quite look like one. Le Corbusier used his sculptural ideas and implemented them into this building and most people say it was the birth of sophisticated architecture. This building looks like it has to be there, it just fits in this isolated place, but it still brings so much life to it.

Daniel Libeskind

Libeskind’s architecture is quite similar to zaha’s except from the fa t that It is linear. Both Zaha and Daniel use the same modern design that we have seen but Daniel makes it a little more interesting. He takes the old simple symmetrical buildings and adds a modern irrational steel block in the middle of it. A good example of this is the Dresden military history museum. You have a traditional looking museum but you also have this modern shard spiking out of the heart of the building. Personally I love this style, I like to see the old turned into something with more personality in this modern day of age. Daniel deliberately messed with the façade of the building to engage the public and give them a better experience. As this is a military museum it kind of makes sense to add this. Instead of adding a plain extension at the back of the building he decided to make it look more violent and look like it exploded on the building.

Daniel Libeskind • This is the holocaust monument located in Ottawa Canada. This is a typical Daniel Libeskind structure with a none symmetrical linear design. This structure is created with distinct triangular shapes which create a star from the plan view which resembles the Jewish star that Nazis forced them to wear. The stone material also resembles as a grave stone. The landscape is surrounded newly planted trees that will emerge from the pebbled ground of the the concrete structure which resembles how Canadian survivors and their children have contributed to Canada. This building is located next to a war museum, so people could come over to this memorial.

• This is the 18.36.54 house bade of a bronze cladding on the exterior and a unique linear unsymmetrical style. This house is created with irregular polygons that reflect the true side of mother nature. From the grass to the trees and their complex shape, this house mimics all of those features. The wooden interior brings a welcoming and warm feeling and brings the outside world indoors. The material used on the exterior is reflective so it will reflect all the trees and the bright sky shining on it, hence it blends in with its surrounding making it one with the landscape.

Architect and paper folding inspiration models • `This is using Daniel Libeskind as an inspiration from the 18.36.54 house and • Trying to implement it into a pavilion design for the v&a gallery. The use of • Triangular design really makes it look contemporary and blends well with the • Environment. As the v&a is a old building adding something modern to it will • Create a contrast and make the building pop out more.

Plaster model making. This was created by using plaster cast and a Smooth plastic shell. We use the plastic sheet And fold it in ways to create a unique shape, But also making sure it forms a shell. Then we Take plaster powder and water and mix it in The ratio of 1:2. then pour the plaster cast Into the plastic shell and let to set. Then you Get this white solid model. You can use a craft Knife to reshape it if you desire. My goal was to use Daniel Libeskind as inspiration and mimic his style.

Using plaster models for inspiration Using the plaster Models I pick out Parts of it I like And use that as an Idea to use for my Final design.

Model 2 design Using the plaster Models I pick out Parts of it I like And use that as an Idea to use for my Final design.

Working on placement.

With this I am deciding Where to locate the Pavilion and the Restrictions of the area. For example I had to Make the building More of an L shape so It would curve around The pond.

Developing ideas Now im using the parts of The models I liked plus The orientation and shape Of the building to create Real life solutions for the Final design. Here I am just Experimenting with Different shapes to add to the pavilion.

Final solution This is my final design. I added More shapes and structure To the pavilion so it is a more Suitable design for the needs Of a pavilion. Using the red circled idea from the previous slide I added more roofs so I could create a more pavilion look. Plus in the design sketch the roof ended too low so I created more of a higher roof for more head space in the corners.

Final solution models Here is the final design but represented as a model. Made of foam board as the base and used normal card board layered over with white card to create the final design. This pavilion contains a cloakroom, toilets eating area and a place to add art sculptures. I used a dslr to create this white florescent lighting to soften the mood and make the building blend in more. The area around my pavilion is the v&a court yard, this is used just to give a sense of scale of how big the pavilion would look like in real life. This pavilion follows Daniel Libeskind’s design with the triangular unsymmetrical look.

Silhouette with building

The cut outs on the roof of the pavilion will be skylights providing the space with natural light and making the interior feel bigger.

Close up shots plus plan view. In red circled location there would be free standing toilets enclosed by walls. All open areas are also closed of with clear glass. And in the blue circle will be the cloakroom where you can place all your belongings. The rest of the free spaces will be dedicated for free standing art sculptures

Final design on sketchup

Final design progression on sketchup

Here I just added a toilet area some extra lighting and places to put statues as an art gallery.

Development of progression design Overall the client loves the design of the building but they would prefer if it was more closed, so it would be more practical and weather sealed. So I will go back to the drawing board and create a more solid shape that will sustain heating and be a more suitable place as a gallery.

Model development Sketch-up drawings in different styles

Development idea 2

Development Idea number 2 In this Sketch-up model I used the exact building as the original sketched model but I was playing around with it on Sketh-up. I distorted one corner of the building and it distorted the whole shape into a unique design that could actually be used to develop into another pavilion. I used the Sketch-up model and made some plan and elevation drawings of the distorted building so I can use it and develop it on paper before putting it one Sketch-up again and refining my idea.
