PROJECT 01

Verilux Light Bulb

INFO

PROJECT Light Bulb Packaging INSTRUCTOR William Monroe COURSE Package Design 1

BRIEF

To help people suffering from acne conditions, Verilux introduced a new Phototherapy System for Acne. It designed the product to painlessly and quickly treat those existing skin condition, while improving skin appearance, tone and texture. The goal of this project is to build a simple and friendly package that distinguishes the brand from others. Each product is named after a crystal, a natural beauty, as is light. The concept true light is based on the brand name. I played with natural gradients inspired by crystals. To emphasize its natural focus, I designed a whole new all-onepiece structure and chose to print on recycled yellow tone paper. I consider Apercu Typeface a good choice. The mono style is clean and modern; mono numbers convey a sense of electricity.

MUSEUM EXHIBITION CAMPAIGN

PROJECT 02

Future Present: Lazlo Moholy -Nagy

INFO

PROJECT Exhibition Campaign INSTRUCTOR John Nettleton COURSE Graphic Design 2

BRIEF

PROJECT

DATE Spring 2016

The Laszlo Moholy-Nagy exhibition includes more than 250 works in all media from public and private collections across Europe and the U.S.. Also on display is a large-scale installation, the Room of the Present, a contemporary construction of an exhibition space originally conceived by Lazlo Monholy-Nagy in 1930.

01

I created a series of print materials to promote the Moholy-Nagy exhibition in the Guggeinheim. Inspired by the similarity in beautiful shapes between the artist’s works and the museum’s majestic structure, I took a modern and experimental approach. The design system has an easy-to-follow structure for consistency throughout all promotional pieces as well as for future museum exhibitions. I captured the “experimental“ keyword by using Bauhaus-style elements and adopting Moholy-Nagy’s most representative invention—photograms. To make it practical to promote, the design features variations of Moholy-Nagy’s photograms. The orange and black color palette emphasizes the radical impression for which he’s known in his art.

WINE BOTTLE LABEL DESIGN

PROJECT 03

Black Stallion Winery

INFO

PROJECT Wine Packaging INSTRUCTOR Thomas McNulty COURSE Package Design 3

BRIEF

PROJECT

DATE Summer 2017

Before grapes dominated the landscape, the oak-studded Napa Valley was once home to the Silverado Horseman’s Center, the area’s only indoor riding arena, Black Stallion Estate Winery celebrates the property’s rich equestrian long history.

01

The concept of the project is ‘heritage’. They take pride in their history the quality of wine they provide. To get a different way to describe Black Stallion ’s trustful quality, I connect their history with the brand name itself. Horses from Silverado Horseman’s Center and Wines from Black Stallion Winery. I think it’s perfect to make a metaphor between horse and Wine. In this design, a modern, elegant and clean layout showcases a kingly horse marches through wind, head held high and proud, represents the best wine of Napa.

PROJECT Conceptual App INSTRUCTOR Sarah Seward COURSE Graphic Design 3

BRIEF

PROJECT

DATE Fall 2016

Watching movies is a popular form of entertainment for some, but others take film seriously. For those movie lovers who want to identify a particular moment of a film, it is a difficult task.

01

The project is to create a conceptual App. I made a film identification App that targets movie lovers, especially people working in the motion picture industry. After some interviews, I realized they need a platform to share their thoughts and ask questions. To make it user friendly, the App’s settings are customizable, even the interface color. The logo was inspired by a puzzle piece, because a movie still is a part of a film. The ease of use is emphasized in the wireframes.

Anxiety Does Matter

INFO

PROJECT Booklet INSTRUCTOR Megumi Kiyama COURSE Visual System 1

BRIEF

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population ever y year. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only 36% of those suffering receive treatment.

PROJECT

DATE Spring 2017

01 02 03 04 05

The goal of the project is to make a booklet about a social issue. I want to educate people about anxiety disorders. For a person with anxiety, the disorder can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school, and relationships. Their loved ones often don’t know what to do. The booklet includes a test for people to determine if they have an anxiety disorder. This introductory booklet explains the basics, and conveys hope that anxiety disorders can be overcome. I used blocks and partially hidden letters in the title to represent the life of a person who has an anxiety disorder. I modified images of people to look like a TV with bad reception, representing their disconnect with life and other people. The color overlays convey the message that anxiety can be overcome.

Step Forward: A Minion Tribute

INFO

PROJECT Typography Cardset INSTRUCTOR David Scott COURSE Typography 2 DATE Fall 2015 PROJECT

BRIEF

Minion is a serif typeface released in 1990 by Adobe Systems. Designed by Robert Slimbach, it is inspired by late Renaissance-era type and intended for body text and extended reading.

01

This project is to create a tribute cardset to be sold in SFMOMA. The typeface I chose is Minion. The story of the enthusiastic designer Robert Slimbach is encouraging and inspiring. After he taught himself calligraphy and typography, he was self-employed for two years as a freelance type designer. He later commented on this period, “I wasn’t really making enough money to live on.” The concept Step Forward describes his career experience. To show moving forward and the process of change, I combined small arrows with both filled-in and outlined letters. To achieve an industrial production feeling, I used metallic paper. The design of the back shows the progress of a series of letters from paper to digital form.

INFO

PROJECT Event Promotion INSTRUCTOR David Scott COURSE Typography 2

BRIEF

PROJECT

DATE Fall 2015

“Freedom: Art Indulgence” is an annual charity event that features art and music. The Imagine Bus Project works with incarcerated youth to encourage self-expression through art and to inspire personal development when they re-enter the community.

01

The goal of this project is to create a sustainable, playful and typeoriented system to raise people’s awareness of the event. The project requirements forbid use of imagery. The design must be in complete typography driven. Because of the charitable purpose behind it, I achieved an overall serious mood by using big and boldly type conveys the date while small type conveys the event entertainment. I build interactivity into the design: The flyer is sealed and opens like an invitation. The ID badge is multi-functional—the front can be worn on a lanyard and reversed to become a table tent.

INFO

PROJECT System Rebranding INSTRUCTOR Thomas McNulty COURSE Identity 1

BRIEF

PROJECT

DATE Spring 2017

Five Keys Charter School is an educational service for former inmates. Through social and restorative justice principles, they provide the opportunity to restart their education, focusing on five key areas: Education, Employment, Recovery, Family, and Community.

01

The goal of this collaborative project was to rebrand Five Keys to be more recognizable. The concept “I’m still learning to...” was applied to a campaign including posters and fund-raising products such as T-shir t s, mugs and tote bags. To convey a tr ust wor thy message, blue is the primary color, and a key is incorporated in the logo. To emphasize the mission of the program, icons for education, employment, recovery, family, and community represent the Five Keys organization. Motion graphics of icons are played on website.
