Affordable housing in countryside TĂźrkenfeld

This is a symbolic collage of City and Village. TĂźrkenfeld is a Village near Munich city, with subway people could arrive in the city center in 40 min. Except for senior people, who enjoy living near nature; there is also a lot of young people choose to live here. As an extension of city Munich, there is a huge demand for affordable apartments. The site is near from subway station and has connections to two roads. It used to be a nature area surrounded by houses. Regard to the existing houses, the new housing modules are created with a similar size as the houses nearby. And a huge distance was held between new housing and the existing ones, without the aboriginal people to disturb. Each house has its garden and openings towards four sides. All of them are organized inside a net structure. The main axis is turned 45 degree so that the longtime direct sunshine from the south will be avoided. In the middle, there are two places reserved for public squares. Where located the entrance of the garage and public tower house, which is considered as co-working space for young people.

STREET

This is a view through walking area and driving road. The view follows the topography going up and seized by a tower house at the end of the road. The axis always offset a little bit to remind people: there is a road changing. It also makes the view through the house gaps dynamic. Sub road vertically joins to the main road. which releases the strict road into a variable public space.

House Module Based on two yard-sizes, six ground shapes, and different height, there are 12 isolated house prototypes created to fill the net structure. All the prototypes are constructed with the woodballoon-frame structure on a concrete base. In the end, each street could present itself differently.

Studies of Sameness Mansion block living in Edinburgh

The criterion of sameness consists of every level in urban design, architectural design, and interior design. in the surrounding of the site, there are many curved buildings, which make the street very dynamic and also, produce a lot of square-like street quality. Each edge faces a different state of the city. Like the northwest part is facing a subway station. The Southeast part is facing an open circle residential building. The other two edges are considered with the flow of traffic. The solution of the site was to encircle this area with residential buildings to complete all situations on each side and leave the middle space as a public city garden, which is open to all dwellers in the surrounding. The curved facade is constructed by the folded concrete panel, which is created in three sizes and repeat randomly. The apartment plan follows the law of facade so that every apartment has a similar quality but a different size. This allows a mixed residential membership to live here.

The volume occupies the street edge, and keeps the suitable depths of residential building. The central garden is created.

Following the urban fabric of Edinburgh, transforming the straight facade into the slight inward curve facade.

Adjusting the building mass according to the urban form; creating the plaza near high-traffic locations.

Open the building mass to integrate the garden into the residencial area.

Adding the single-storey building mass inside the primary building mass to enlarge the commercial area at ground floor and form the private roof garten.

Dividing the whole building mass and raising them separately following the change of topography.

Interior and Garden Facade

Following the urban fabric of Edinburgh to deepen the building form, finally creating the folded origami-like facades with three folded levels. The rhythm changes between the exterior facades, interior facades and garden facades bring the harmonious variation in sameness.

Inside the building, there is a systematical solution for all apartments. Every apartment faces both the street side and the garden side with rooms. In the middle part are small cells, which are regarded as a traffic zone to connect all the rooms on both sides. In this way, every room has its privacy and also, could be reused by different needs. For example, the living room and sleeping room could be exchanged on any occasion. That fulfills every need of the people who live here. With three different sizes of the folded concrete panel on the street side, each room will be also divided into different sizes. This delivered the idea of Sameness and produced a harmonious atmosphere for the surrounding.

Rebuilding from a Postbank into coworking space in Munich

The existing building is a Postbank in the center of Munich city. Along with the rising of online banking, there will be a lot of bank houses no more needed and will be transformed into new functions. Here we integrate Co-working space for artists as the most potential function. The building located next to the commercial and tourist part of the city, and it owns a small square in front of it. On the other three sides of the square are two shopping malls and a Parkhouse. Firstly to reactivate this building the square will be rearranged, which could mark the entrance of the building, a footpath to connect two shopping malls, and an empty space for people to stay. Secondly, there will be a chain of mixed functions integrated. Expect the quiet spaces for working at the table there are also studios for visual and acoustic art; workshops for handicraft; and also temporary apartments for artists to apply. Most essentially is the facade. There are five other stories built above the existing part, with a typical office building appearance with steel-glass structure was chosen to show people: here is a working space. On the other hand, the existing part was painted all white. Every single decorate is wiped off like it is a foundation stone to support the upper part.

Comparison between before and after: 1. The existing building was highlighted by the steel-glass structure. 2. The pillars outside the existing building are additional load-bearing for the upper part. 3. Some windows are enveloped for the special needs of the interior space.
