SITE LOCATION

TOWER BRIDGE Our exact location is situated next to Tower Bridge where most tourist would come to do their sightseeing alone or with families. The site is rather abandoned because the right usage of space is just not there exept a few benches and a lovely view. In general, it is a potential area for the public if the site is used correctly. The site is next to Tower Bridge by walking through Shad Thames. It is a different experience by walking in that area. Our site is surrounded by the river, residential and commercial buildings which include offices, cafes, restaurants and shops. The site would be used especially at lunch time where people would have their lunch or ciggarete breaks or whatnot a meeting place. The site is suitable for the public because of the brick pavements and stoneworks. The confine spaces would be appropiate for our architectural furniture due to its subject.

Natur al Elem ents

Exa m p l e o f a cti vi ti es a t si te

Since the site is located beside Thames River, a few natural elements was discovered in the area which was mist, mud, moist soil and moss.

Activities Not many activities is happening at the site if to be compared to the opposite side of the Tower bridge. The public would usually use the space to relax & rest or take pictures or a place for people to chat on the phone.

SO U N D D R AW IN G S A

S O U N D Sound is a disturbance of mechanical energy that propagates through matter as a wave. Sound is further characterized by the generic properties of wave.Humans perceive sound by hearing. Sound = Vibrations that travel through air. Scientist and Engineers use a wider definition of sound that is low and high frequency vibrations in the air that cannot be heard by humans and vibrations that travel through all forms of matter, gases, liquids, solids, and plasmas. Matter that support the sound is called the medium. Particles in the medium are displaced by the wave and oscillate. The scientific study of the absorption & reflection ofsound waves is called acoustics.

3d frequency analysis by using wavelab software to visualise certain sounds around the site for 20 second take at every hour as shown above. Loud sounds such as traffics ,boat horns, aeroplane & helicopter are shown in the diagram with blue to violet colour sections.

HELMET EXPERIMENT

OUR GROUP EXPERIMENTED ON A HELMET EACH WHICH WAS TO STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MATERIAL WOULD EFFECT ON THE HELMETS. USING MIDI RECORDER TO RECORD THE SOUNDS AT THE SITE. ALUMINIUM

SPONGE DURING THE EXPERIMENT ON HELMET STUDIES WE FOUND THAT THE MOST ECHO SOUND WAS CLEARLY THE PAPER HELMET THOUGH THE REST OF THE HELMET DID NOT MADE MUCH DIFFERENT BUT IT DID ON A SMALLER SCALE. CLOSING ONE SENSE OF OUR BODY SUCH AS THE EYE MADE A LOT OF DIFFERENCES WHERE ONESELF WOULD CONCENTRATE ON THE OTHER SENSE OF THEIR BODY.

SOUND CHAMBER A CONCEPTUAL MODEL OF THE SOUND CHAMBER WITH 5 TUBES AND SEMI CIRCLE CLAY WHERE WE FOUND OUT THAT IT AMPLIFY SOUNDS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES IF WE WERE TO PUT A HUMAN BEING INSIDE THE BIG DOME WHERE AS THE OTHER 5 SMALLER DOME ACTS AS A SOUND COLLECTOR AND COULD BE HEARD FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.

PLAN

TO REFER WIND DIRECTION DIAGRAM ( SELECTED ECHOED AREA ) BASED UPON THEORY, SOUND IS INFLUENCED BY ITS SURROUNDING AND THAT PARTICULAR PART OF THE AREA HAS THE MOST ACOUSTIC/ ECHO.

OUR GROUP HAS EXPERIMENTED ON STUDY MODEL OF OUR BASIC DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURE WHERE WE ARE FOCUSING ON MAKING SOUND BASED FROM OUR SITE LOCATION. THERE WERE VARIOUS DESIGNS OF MODELS THAT WE HAD CAME UP WITH BUT THE MOST FUNCTIONAL MODELS WERE THE SQUARE ISH SHAPE. OUR DESIGN HAVE A FEW INSTRUMENTS WHERE WE COULD BLEND IN TOWARDS THE STRUCTURE.

THE IMAGES ARE OUR PROTOTYPE MODEL OR THE ARCHITECTURAL FURNITURE BECAUSE THE FORM COULD BE USED FOR PUBLIC USAGE AND WOULD NOT DISTURB THE VIEW AT THE TOWER BRIDGE.

HUMAN INTERFACE MACHINE

Throughout the previous experiment which provide different experience through various containment such as pipe and hemisphere dome, we decide to approach new type of experiment which is creating sound influence by surrounding sound. According to our previous research we define the surrounding sound at our site as two different type of sound which are nature sound and man made sound. Throughout this experiment, we create few different type of instrument to make artificial sound which just alike surrounding sound. Each instrument in frame representing different type of surrounding sound. We used various type of material such as wood, metal, pebbles, nuts, and also paper.

A

Laminated aluminium structure for outdoor usage and protection from rain. This structure is a representation of reflection on river thames of water to the brick wall as an eye cathing or selling point.

C

Rolling system has hollowed round timber with rocks from the site which is covered and connected to a single cylinder timber with wheels at the end.

B

Hydraulic system is used to create different whistling sounds by using air pressure and variety sizes of bottles. At the same time when the air is pushed down, the water rise up and the pvc pipe would move about. The base has to be sturdy and solid.

D

Aluminium sheet is used to created thunder or wind like sound by compressing it into a smaller space. The bended shape of the sheet would move from left to right once it is pushed.

E

This method of machine is based on footsteps at the site. Strings are attached to a pedal and a cylinder timber. When the pedal is triggered, the cylinder would fall onto a hollowed timber.
