ANALYSIS

Kintted Ottoman - Homemaker

The object has an eliptical shape which changes according to where pressure is applied, It is similar to a bean bag with an outer layer that protects the inner cushion. Its uses are also similar to a bean bag and is light enough making it very portable.

Upon further inspection, the outer layer seems to be made of a thick kind of string in the 4mm thickness. The string appears to be woven in a very specific knitting pattern which englufs the entire object.

SKETCH MODELS Skin and Bone

The goal here was to experiment with the outer layer of the object which is the skin/bone part engulfing the cushion. By changing the grid to a more organic messy type pattern, uning a similar material (Hard string), pva glue was applied and then woven together to create the pattern shown. Later the entire pattern was trimmed to clean up the messy ends.


DIGITAL MODEL

The making of this model started out with several trial runs. Eventually, several circles were drawn on the same x and y axis but with varying radiuses and varying z axis. Because the shape of the ottoman is not completely eliptical, manual radius inputs were necessary. Then the loft tool was used to select the circles and create the surface. After that, the panelling tool was used to create the points for the ‘bone’ part of the boject. After creating the the correct ammount of points, the shape of the panels were changed to the box shape grid. Then the pipe command was used to create the representation of the string.

DESIGN IDEA 1 PLATES

This design focouses on the shoulders as the chosen personal space to tackle. It aims to provide padding and protection similar to the Japanese samurai worriors of the past. The design is taking the grid pattern from the chosen object making it hard and rigid but at the same time light weight. With the reduced mass, it should be lighter but still strong to maintain its shape and provide some degree of protection.There are several stacked planes of this grid which acts as armour that is mobile and not bulky. The bone concept here is more like an exoskeleton frame.

Drawing from the sketch model, the plates can utilize a more organic design, however, strength may vary.


DESIGN IDEA 2 FABRIC HOODIE

This design focouses on the head and shoulder area as a personal space. In contrast to the previous rigid resign, this one is meant to be a little more softer and more fabric like. It is meant to be similar to a hoodie but with a more net like feel to the wearer. This design is supposed to only go to shoulder length, but is yet to be decided. Still utilising a grid like pattern, the vertical lines are thicker in this design while the horizontal lines increase in quantity but reduced in thickness. This should make the ‘fabric’ tough and able to mantain its shape as depicted below. An interesting part of the design is that with this slightly tougher material, a padding “pillow” could be included which students can use as a sleep anywhere hoodie. This is a softer definition of skin as it is bendable eventhough not as tough as bones. The word cartiladge seem to fit more in this design.

DESIGN IDEA 3 SHOULDER TOWER The final design here is where architecture meets skin and bone. Inspired by the activites in class, This take again tackles the shoulders as a personal space. Having a vertically rising wraped grid panels as depicted, this should offer protection from one side in a very innefective manner. As fo the aesthetics, this design would be the most dramatic and outstanding out of the 3. The design spans from one shoulder all the way across the neck as a structure that size would need a load of support. There is only bones present here. The design still utilises a grid and have random vertical members that is interconnected by smaller horizontal members. This is truly a scaffolding looking wearable sculpture.

The definition of bone here could mean that this design is meant to be an extension of the wearers bones as if it were grown for the purpose of protection (possibly). Upon first glance, the identifiablilty of the desgin makes it an eye popping one however, more connections and securing methods are to be thought of for the possibility of this design to sit on the wearers shoulders.
