OTTERY ST MARY

TUMBLING WEIR

A DELIGHTFUL TOWN STEEPED IN CENTURIES OF HISTORY First mentioned as ‘Otri’ in the Domesday Book of 1086, the ancient market town of ‘Oteri Sancte Marie’ prospered on the banks of the River Otter, around the parish church of Saint Mary built in the style of Exeter Cathedral. The production of wool cloth was a major industry in the town and in the late 18th century, to meet the demands the original corn mill on the site of Otters Holt was rebuilt along with a Tumbling Weir which is still flowing today.

The late 18th century also heralded the birth of Ottery St Mary’s most eminent son, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, widely acknowledged as one of England’s finest poets. His famous poems include the ‘Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ and ‘Kubla Khan’, the opening lines of which are featured in the local park.

Ottery St Mary is one of the oldest and most historic towns in Devon. Sitting alongside the beautiful River Otter the cluster of old Mill buildings form a distinctive character reflecting the local industrial heritage of the town within its rural landscape.

The new terrace along Mill Street delivers a more traditional style of architecture. The red brick and light mortar, slate pitched roof and sliding slash effect windows match the material palette of the Mill. Ground floor bays etc

The unique historical context shaped the vision for bringing the vacant site back into a well-designed prosperous use. On the sites’ boundaries The dominant listed Mill, River Otter and Mill Street heavily influenced the style and character of the houses.

Between the riverside and Mill Street houses is a delightful, tree-lined mews courtyard which widens towards a central arrival point at the heart of the scheme forming an important element of the public realm adding to the legible movement network through the development and beyond.

Complementing the massing of the Mill, the 3 storey riverside townhouses provide a strong sense of form and enclosure. Their positioning also offered the opportunity for dual aspect housing with the front synonymous with the appearance of the Mill whilst the rear elevation is contemporary with expansive glazing, sliding doors, balconies and terraces to maximise the wonderful rural views. Ground floor bays, dormer windows and chimneys deliver a stronger and more defined main street into Ottery St Mary, blending into the historic landscape.

The interior layouts were carefully considered to create contemporary, open and light rooms with large living spaces and generous bedrooms. There are extra touches of luxury throughout the houses whether it’s the terraces overlooking the River Otter, the loft-style bedrooms to the three storey properties, Juliet balconies to the Coach Houses, modern kitchens spaces or large private gardens, the Otters Holt development delivers upmarket houses for young professionals, families or retirees alike.
