For a better understanding of the concept, the narrator would like to introduce the reader a little social context of the situation in which Spain was in the beginning of the 19th century. The whole country was under the reign of the absolute monarch Charles III and his family. His son, Charles IV was soon to be the new king. There was no democracy and the people in Spain lived under severe poverty. It was a society of extremes, nobility and clergy had power and wealthy while the people barely had education or facilities for living. The people of Spain at that time lived their lives believing in traditions and costumes, in old myths and legends of their culture, and they were very rich with them. After the French Revolution, Europe was being partially conquered by the army of Napoleon. His empire was growing and growing and at that time some of his soldiers were based in different regions of the north of Spain. Both countries have planned to attack and conquer Portugal and divide their findings afterwards. It was a time of secrecy and plots, and what initially was a very well designed military plan, it turned into treason. The French army took control of strategic Spanish military bases and forced the king to give him control and the crown of the country and he named his Brother Joseph I King of Spain.

This is a series of sketches analising the different references found on my research of the 18th and 19th-century costume and folklore dress from Northern Europe, most specifically from France (the tailoring and design of the Napoleon uniforms) and Spain. The author found a special interest in the construction of garments as in the “breeches and in the hardware displayed in the garments like all the metallic buttons.
