Leadership Pack
A guide to leadership and how to find the right opportunity to suit your journey.
Leadership
Leadership offers are available throughout the NHS, both nationally and locally. As an organisation we are passionate about developing the workforce and promoting diverse and long-lasting careers that are both meaningful and enjoyable.
At RCHT and CFT our AHPs and AHP Support workforce have a wealth of skills to offer the wider healthcare service and as employers we are impassioned in ensuring all of us are working across all 4 pillars of practice: Clinical, Leadership, Education and Research. It can be a daunting prospect trying to fulfil all aspects, however there are opportunities and offers for us all at every level to further our learning & development, skills and knowledge.
Its important to note that whilst the courses here provide an excellent grounding into leadership at all levels, these should form only the foundations of your leadership development, and that how you demonstrate your own leadership skills is where your attributes in leadership really come to the fore.
What you said
Following a recent survey sent out to the AHP Workforce, it has become apparent that opportunities for leadership are often not visible. Only 42% of our AHPs knew where to find leadership opportunities and over half of us had never undertaken a leadership course, 74% said they would like to see a map of leadership offers We would therefore like to offer a guide on which leadership courses might be for you, and how to access them.
Useful things
Here you will find information on topics pertinent to leadership development within the NHS including self-assessments and TED talks.
These can be used as both inspiration and a source that you can keep coming back to and also to impart to others.
You might also wish to use our excellent library services to facilitate your leadership knowledge and seek the best evidence based resources to shape your journey.
Leadership Development
As we move forward throughout the lifespan of our careers in the healthcare sector, it is important to gain an understanding of our own leadership aspirations and how we might attain the roles that interest us the most.
There are a wealth of courses available to us all, and whilst the temptation to attend as many courses as possible might be there, it isn’t always the best use of our time and energy. It is, however, entirely possible shape our leadership journey by choosing the right course for the right path.
The NHS Leadership Academy and the South West Leadership Academy have a wide range of courses and Leadership resources to aid your development, some of which will be explored further along in your Leadership Pack
The Healthcare Leadership Model
The Healthcare Leadership Model is designed to help people develop as leaders by discovering and exploring their behaviours. The model is made up of nine dimensions that illustrate the importance of leadership from all perspectives including that of self, colleagues and the wider network which we work within.
• Leading with Care
• Engaging the Team
• Sharing the Vision
• Influencing for Results
• Evaluating Information
• Inspiring Shared Purpose
• Holding to Account
• Connecting our Service
• Developing Capability
This model can be used to inform your leadership principles and guide your learning. the full PDF of the Leadership Model can be found here: https://www.leadershipacademy.nhs.uk/wpcontent/uploads/2014/10/NHSLeadership-LeadershipModel-colour.pdf
If you register for the Leadership Academy you can complete the Healthcare Model Self-Assessment here. You will not be able to access this until you have completed your profile.
Systems Leadership
One way of understanding system leadership is that of working beyond organisational boundaries on challenges of mutual concern that cannot be solved by any one person or institution. The system is no longer focused on operating as sole organisations and calls for a collaborative approach across a variety of new boundaries. We recognise the complexity of these challenges upon the system and ask of leaders across the health and care system to embody future focused, inclusive leadership qualities.
Designed for any leader working across systems to support exploration of key strengths and development areas as a starter for development and/or coaching and mentoring conversations as well as wider system leadership development activity.
Systems Leadership
The Systems Leadership Behaviours Self-Assessment
The System Leadership Behaviours Self-Assessment has been designed as a multifunctional development tool to support all leaders working across a system or placebased environment with self-reflection and assessment.
It takes just 35 minutes to complete and will support individuals to identify their strengths, areas for development and personal readiness for system leadership.
