The focus of my photography study is building structure. I have always found the structure of architectural designs fascinating because this piece of the building is the bones of the building. The structure is the true essence of what architecture is. The structure can reveal the form of the building or it can be conceived completely separate from the form. The structure can be the element that withstands time. It can reveal what a building once was when that building has been lost over the years. The structure of a building can also be light, almost weightless. It can seem that a building has no structure at all. However, the structure can also be heavy. It can become prominent and essentially become what the building is. Then the detail work that goes into building structure can be beautiful. This is why building structure has always fascinated me.

Introduction

Structure can be designed to have substantial weight. The structure has a presence all of its own and can sometimes stand apart from the rest of the building. This type of structure can usually be seen on larger pieces of architecture. I find heavy structure to be fascinating because of the presence that it creates within the architecture it inhabits. The structure can become the form of the building. It becomes the iconic element of the architecture.

Not only can structure have a heavy presence, the structure can be light in its appearance. The structure can seem as if it is almost non-existent. It can also seem to be unable to support the architecture that it inhabits, but somehow it does. This aspect of building structure has always fascinated me because due to the lightness of this type of structure, the shapes that can be found are interesting to me. This type of structure can take a multitude of shapes which also makes this type versatile.

The structural assembly comes together to create the whole that supports the architecture it inhabits. However, the true essence of building structure can be found in the small detail moments. These moments show how the building structure as an assembly comes together to create that whole that supports the architecture. These small moments are fascinating to me because this is where the meta-structure can be found. This means that the details is the structure within the structure.

The building structure is the most important element of architecture. The structure is the essence of what the building is. It creates the form. The structure is the bones of architecture. The element of structure is continually evolving. New structural systems are continuously developing. It is constantly changing form, which in turn progresses architectural design through the years. This progression will allow for architecture development to be perpetual and constantly evolve. This is the most fascinating aspect of building structure and this is why it appeals to me.
