INTRODUCTION TO SELF

M.1

ABOUT ME Certain events in my life have led me to gain a passion for architecture. Being born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and it being such a small island, my parents always encouraged me to travel and see how the rest of the world lives. I spent a lot of time in the United States, visiting the big cities to the most rural areas. I also spent most of my summers traveling and learning from the European culture. I am very lucky that I had the opportunity to go to all these different places and gain the inspiration that I needed to discover what I wanted to dedicate my days to. These opportunities and experiences are what lead me to study architecture. Visiting all these different cities and seeing the infinite number of interpretations that people have about architecture and urban design is fascinating to me. It sparked a desire to be part of all these different cultures through design and leave my mark on someone else’s journey. I decided to get my undergraduate degree in Washington, D.C. and I loved every step of the way. The knowledge that I gained is something that I have been able to put in practice now that I have been working for an architecture firm for the past two years and have been part of the FIU Masters of Architecture program as well. Some of my hobbies and interests, aside from architecture, are working out, running, paddle boarding and bike riding. I like to keep myself busy and since Miami is constantly changing and is such a dynamic place I usually spend my weekends trying new restaurants and finding new spots and things to do around the city.

CHAPTER 1

Chapter Highlights

Hue, value and chroma are the three dimensions of color. Additive color theory applies to combining the three primaries of light-red, blue and green. Subtractive color theory applies to combining the three primaries of pigment- red, blue, and yellow. A variety of color systems are available to designers. No single solution is used in the interior design industry; rather, each system offers its own contribution to learning about working with color.

SHRODER HOUSE

GERRIT RIETVELD

GERRIT RIETVELD - HIS REAL NAME BEING GERARD THOMAS RIETVELD WAS BORN IN UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS ON JUNE 24, 1888. HE WAS TRAINED AS A CABINET MAKER BY HIS FATHER AND LATER BECAME AN ARCHITECT AND FURNITURE DESIGNER. HE STARTED HIS CAREER WHEN HE DESIGNED HIS FAMOUS RED BLUE CHAIR AND THEN SHORTLY AFTER HE BECAME AN ARCHITECT AND A MEMBER OF THE DE STIJL MOVEMENT IN 1919. HE WAS ALSO A MEMBER OF THE GROUP OF ARTISTS CALLED KUNSTLIEFDE AND WAS ALSO KNOWN FOR BEING PART OF THE BAUHAUS EXHIBIT BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR THE DESIGN OF THE FAMOUS SCHRODER HOUSE.

GROUND LEVEL - HALL - KITCHEN/DINING/LIVING AREA - READING - STUDIO - WORKING - SLEEPING

SECOND LEVEL - WORK/SLEEPING - HALL - BATH - LIVING/DINING - SLEEPING - BALCONIES

THE SCHRODER HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1924 AND IS THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THE DE STIJL ARCHITECTURE STYLE. IT IS A TWOSTORY HOUSE THAT WAS BUILT FOR MRS. TRUUS SCHRODER-SCHRADER AND HER THREE CHILDREN.

THE SCHRODER HOUSE WAS DESIGNED FOR FLEXIBLE INTERIOR SPACES. THERE IS NO HIERARCHY OF ROOMS BECAUSE ALL OF THE INTERIOR SPACES ARE CHANGEABLE WITH THE USE OF SLIDING AND REVOLVING PANELS. EVERYTHING IN THE HOUSE IS A COMBINATION OF PLANES THAT BLUR THE BOUNDARIES OF INTERIOR TO EXTERIOR. THIS IS ALSO ACHIEVED BY THE USE OF THE PRIMARY COLORS. THE USE OF RED BLUE AND YELLOW IS BECAUSE THESE COLORS ARE A PRIMARY CHARACTERISTIC OF THE DE STIJL MOVEMENT. HE INCORPORATED THESE COLORS TO DIFFERENTIATE THE USAGE OF SPACES AND CREATE BOUNDARIES IN THE INTERIOR. SINCE ALL THE WALLS ARE CHANGABLE AND THE HOUSE IS AN OPEN FLOOR PLAN, COLORS AID IN CREATING THE LIMITS OF SPACE IN THE FLOOR PLAN.

THE COMBINATION OF PRIMARY COLORS WITH NEUTRAL COLORS CREATES CONTRAST INSIDE THE SPACE THAT IS PLEASING TO THE EYE. IT LETS THE DESIGNER ACCENTUATE ELEMENTS OF IMPORTANCE THAT WILL AFFECT THE OVERALL ENVIRONMENT. USING THIS COMBINATION ALSO AFFECTS HOW LIGHT IS REFLECTED INSIDE THE SPACE. THIS CONTRAST OF COLORS COMBINED WITH THE OPEN FLOOR PLAN ALLOWS LIGHT TO FILTER INTO THE HOUSE AND ILLUMINATE THE SPACE. THE SCHRODER HOUSE IS AN ICONIC WORK OF ART THAT IS A PERFECT REPRESENTATION OF THE DE STIJL MOVEMENT AND THE ARCHITECTURE STYLE OF GERRIT RIETVELD. THIS WAS MAINLY ACHIEVED BY THE LINEAR PLANES AND THE USE OF PRIMARY COLORS IN CONTRAST WITH THE NEUTRAL COLORS OF BLACK, WHITE AND GRAY.

FILM ANALYSIS

FILM SUMMARY This film is about the legends and stories of Edward Bloom. His son Will learns that his father is dying from cancer and decides to come back to repair their relationship. Since Edward was always travelling during Will’s childhood he always viewed his father as a man that never really took an interest about his family and he didn’t believe all the stories that he would tell him. When Will comes back he decides to go look for the truth about his father’s stories. Will then discovers that his father can no longer speak effortlessly so Edward asks Will to finish his story. When Will’s wife gives birth to their child he decides to continue the tales and philosophy of his father with his own son. Color plays a big role in this movie in terms of mood. Since the mood of the film changes a lot from scenes of sickness to the different adventures in his stories, color is used to differentiate the moods of the movie and to spark different emotions in the viewer as a different story is told. the city.

SCENE ANALYSIS

This is my favorite scene of the movie. It’s when he first sees the love of his life in a circus and he felt like the world stopped and time stood still. In the scene everything around Edward halts and it creates that effect that his only focus is her as he is moving through the space pushing the flying popcorn away as everything else around him is frozen. There are a lot of dark tones in this act but the lighting is what makes it all come together. The focus of light on him and in the back makes the main character stand out and generates a feeling of magic when it allows you to see every detail of the way everything stopped in time. RED energy passion determination

BLUE calm comfortable relaxing

GREEN growth renewal hope

This is the most romantic scene in the movie. He proposes to Sandra by planting a field of yellow daffodils, her favorite flowers, outside of her window. The colors are amazing in this scene. I absolutely love the contrast of the yellow and green with his dark blue suit. It creates a feeling of hope and happiness. This is one of the most magical and moving scenes in the film. BLUE energy passion determination

GREEN growth renewal hope

YELLOW happiness optimism illuminating

OFY STORE SMALL RETAIL STORE IN MARY BRICKELL VILLAGE

CONTRAST OF VALUE

warm vs. cold colors the store stays true to its color palette. there is not much change in color except for some of their products. these are the most colorful items in the store that in contrast with their backgrounds draw attention to the buyer.

CONTRAST OF VALUE light vs. dark they use the contrast of white and dark brown to highlight the merchandise and draw attention to the display. they also use light to resonate the newest and pricier items.

CONTRAST OF DESIGN FEATURE size and space they use a bicycle to display items of the store. the contrast of a random object with the store draws attention to the buyer towards the merchandise. they also painted it with a black and white pattern that creates a contrast and attracts the customer. items.

CONTRAST OF TEXTURE smooth vs. rough they use the contrast of smooth and rough textures to highlight certain parts of the store. the rods that they used to hold the shoes was an interesting and creative move. these types of details are what make a store different from others.

FOCAL POINT main element this rhino head is located right in the center of the store and it is the frst thing that you see when you walk in. the black and white pattern with the gold details make it pop out. This is a nice and creative detail in the store and it is coordinted with the pattern on the display bike as well.

COLOR + UNITY + HARMONY

M.9

CHAPTER 6

Chapter Highlights

Colors that share a common hue will relte and harmonize better than colors that have no common color connection. Repetition of color throughout a space unifies the pallette and the interior design. One color can be used to unify two different design elements. Color gradation of value and intensity can be used to distinguish between two similar design elements. Uniform distribution of and use of color in a complex interior space can harmonize the visual clutter. Color harmonies should be planned to accentuate the interior, not overwhelm the space.

COLOR + HOSPITALITY

THE VICEROY HOTEL & SPA DESIGNER: ARQUITECTONICA LOCATION: BRICKELL

This space is very elegant. The use of color and materiality definitely make this lobby a very unique one. Every piece in the room stands out and brings quality to the space. My favorite part of it was the wood pattern in the walls. COLOR and LINE The use of color and line is most apparent in the flooring. By combining the contrasting colors of black, white and gray tiles the lines in the pattern pop and guide the visitor towards the different spaces. COLOR and SHAPE The use of color and shape is evident in the ceilings. The combination of the circular lamp with the square pattern in the ceiling makes the space really dynamic and interesting. The details in the lamp are also amazing. How the light pierces through the openings it really gives the space a unique atmosphere. COLOR and TEXTURE The use of color and texture can be found in the curtains. Curtains can definitely give a space a very distinct ambiance and with this space being so busy it was definitely bold to pick these uniquely patterned curtains. Even though they have a strange pattern they give color and flow to the space. COLOR and PATTERN This pattern was my favorite part of the space. The detail in the walls was the most unique and eyecatching aspect in the lobby. With the combination of the paintings this really made the space a very interesting and cohesive atmosphere.

This lobby is definitely unique. When you walk in you are amazed by the strange but interesting atmosphere, it is extremely different. It has a very dark and mysterious feel to it with neon lights and the contrast of colors. The furniture is a mix of modern and antiquated pieces. COLOR and LINE The use of color and line is present in the benches and the lighting below them. These are some of the most impacting elements when you walk into the lobby space. They create a visual connection towards the elevator room. COLOR and SHAPE The use of color and shape is seen in the columns. They are wrapped around these concrete undulated shapes that create a resemblance to a face. These columns are definitely a signature piece of the building and they are used to reference the hotel and residences. COLOR and TEXTURE The use of color and texture is with the carpets, the fabric of the furniture and the details of the fireplace. The combination of all these different textures give a mysterious and unique feeling to the space in comparison with the modern elements that are also part of this building. COLOR and PATTERN Pattern can be identified in the curtain wall behind the reception desk. This pattern of lines combined with the neon yellow color of the glass definitely gives the space a very strange but yet interesting

DOMINANT

SECONDARY GRAY SECONDARY

GRAY IS A NEUTRAL COLOR. IT IS SOLID AND STABLE, CREATING A SENSE OF CALM AND COMPOSURE. IT IS THE COLOR OF COMPROMISE.

GREEN ACCENT

ACCENT

GREEN IS THE COLOR OF BALANCE AND HARMONY. IT IS THE COLOR OF GROWTH AND RENEWAL. IT IS AN EMOTIONALLY POSITIVE

DESCRIPTION I WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE WHERE PEOPLE WOULD FEEL AT PEACE. I WANTED SOMETHING NEUTRAL WITH ACCENTS OF A POSITIVE AND PEACEFUL COLOR. THAT IS WHY I CHOSE THIS COLOR PALETTE OF NEUTRAL GRAYS WITH ACCENTS OF GREEN.

ANALOGOUS AND MONOCHROMATIC THE GREENS ARE AN EXAMPLE OF ANALOGOUS COLORS AND THE GREYS ARE AN EXAMPLE OF MONOCHROMATIC COLORS. I FOLLOWED THE 60-30-10 RULE WHEN DESIGINIG THE SPACE. USING 60% OF THE DOMINANT COLOR, 30% OF THE SECONDARY COLOR AND 10% OF THE ACCENT COLOR. I REALLY LIKE THE COMBINATION OF THIS COLOR PALETTE. IT MAKES THE SPACE VERY PEACEFUL BUT AT THE SAME TIME VIBRANT AND POSITIVE. THESE COLORS PAIR UP REALLY WELL WITH NATURE THAT’S WHY I DECIDED TO INCLUDE THE ORCHID IMAGE. I BELIEVE THAT IT BRINGS ALL THE COLORS IN THE SPACE TOGETHER. THIS WEEK’S ASSIGNMENT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITES. I LOVED GETTING THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY PUT INTO PRACTICE WHAT WE’VE LEARNED THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER AND I ALSO LOVE PHOTOSHOP AND APPLYING MATERIALITY IN MY RENDERINGS.

SAN JUAN & GREECE

My CULTURE and country is San Juan, Puerto Rico and I have chosen Greece to learn about their culture and how they use color. I’ve always wanted to learn and visit Greece because of it it’s rich history and it’s unique style of architecture.

PR

Red: Means optimism, dynamism, excitement, power and energy Green: Nature, healing, fertility, hope, stability and success.

Blue: Peace, tranquility, cool, clean, soft and pure.

Yellow: Means cheeriness, joy, happiness, sunshine, summer and joy. Orange: Means flamboyant, warmth, enthusiasm, vibrant and organic.

Puerto Rico is a very small island in the Caribbean. It has about 3.5 million inhabitants and its mostly known for its beautiful beaches and energetic culture. One can see this culture at it’s highest during Christmas with the puertorican version of carol singing called “parrandas and the wearing of traditional colorful costumes. The colors of the island are very vibrant. From the sandy blue beaches to the rich greens of the rainforest to the multicolored buildings in Old San Juan. Everything in this island, including the people, is very colorful and spirited. Since nature is such a big part of Puerto Rico the colors green and blue are the most predominant colors in the island and the color Red can be considered the accent color that is used in the cultural clothing, the symbolic flamboyant tree and other traditional pieces of our culture.

GREECE

Blue: Truth, healing, stability, protection, security and loyalty.

Light Blue: Peace, tranquility, cool, clean, soft and pure.

Green: Nature, healing, fertility, hope, stability and success.

Purple: Royalty, mystery, independence and respect.

White: new beginnings, balance and encouragement.

Greece is a country located in southeastern Europe that is one of the most riches in history and color. It is considered to be the birthplace of western civilization and the home of the greek gods. It’s unique use of color is amazing. Everything is painted white and blue with accents of green and purple from the surrounding nature. The constant white is due to the weather. Since it is so warm it keeps the spaces cool and fresh and the blue accents are a representation of nature and the surrounding water. The colors in this country make it a magical place that I am dying to visit. It is so different from the energetic colors from my country. Everything here seems so peaceful and full of history and purity.
