WOVEN EARTH

Enko International Schools How to reflect Enko´s essence into the design? How to recognize the complexity of the sociocultural context and process it through the project? How to promote and reflect an idea of learning and education on an international standard? How to attend the need for flexibility and standardization, while building identity through architecture? How to make a feasable project with excellent comfort conditions obtained through passive systems and technology? How to build a community that will build Africa´s future?

CLIMATE AND COMFORT

The urban and contemporary identity of the building takes inspiration from the observation of the conditions of the built context: between the earthen, massive and stereotomic solutions of the historical buildings of Bamako and the light and open tectonics of the rural constructions. The design recalls both worlds.

The project combines the need for standardization and scalability with the construction of a clear and recognizable image of the building, combined into a complex composition that articulates and projects its own identitary image.

The “urban pedestal” contains mainly open plan, flexible spaces like the library (green), the multipurpose room, the labs and the elevated, covered playground (yellow), while the modular classrooms (blue and cyan) are distributed in the two building blocks with 4 and 5 floors, giving the chance to interchange uses and programmes.

The School represents a model of society, a civic place where kids interact and meet with each other, learning to negotiate and to build a sense of citizenship. The project propose a scheme that allows for three layers of complementary activities through the day, with an easy managment of space in time.

The project implements strategies for optimizing the performance of the building, through the use of passive technologies. Orientation and Natural Light (yellow). Natural and crossing ventilation implemented in every space. Reuse of rainwater and grey water mainly for irrigation of green areas (cyan and grey). Use of Local Materials.

WOVEN EARTH The school design recalls the lightness and geometry of african textiles: design feature adaptable to different context and cultures as an identitary tectonic structure;and the firmness of earthen heritage architecture as a stereotomic pedestal for learning.

THE SCHOOL AND THE CITY The relationship between the Enko School and the city of Bamako lies on two levels; on one side, the school is structured as a city, as it is dense, diverse and connected. On the other side, the school main facade (north), connects with the city in terms of visual perception (the laboratories at work), shareable program (the accessibility of the library and the multipurpose spaces for an expanded timetable), and intimacy (the great communitary roof).

The space of the Secondary Classroom invites to develop different pedagogical strategies while promoting connection ans autonomy of the students and with the teachers

Metropolitan Development Plan (PDM)

This urban development project was underpinned by nine urban-planning points: the road and transportation plan, zoning, housing requirements, environmental sanitation and services infrastructure, monument preservation, regulations, protection and conservation of the environment and disaster mitigation, and equipment and investment systems. Worked specifically on the development of the equipment and infrastructure proposal, and the zoning and urban investment program. Also developed the diagnostic and proposal document at a general level and the design and representation of specific projects in relation to urban centralities, natural reserve areas and parks.
