Furniture Design

Page 1

My work is a means of self-expression. I view the objects I design as more than just pieces of furniture. They are the representation of small parts of myself; experiences that are transformed into designs. These stories originate from specific events, thoughts, or observations of the world around me which eventually transform into a physical object. I wouldn’t say I have a specific design style, but I’m sure not afraid of trying different things. I enjoy working with bold colors and patterns. Somehow, my body of work is an autobiographical record. Each piece reveals something about me, in addition to serving as a functional object. Every project is like a puzzle to be solved. It involves the challenge of creating an object that has to satisfy the needs of function, form, and concept. While the end goal is to have a well-crafted object when the project is complete, the paths taken to realize it are just as important, if not more so, than the final product. The entire process adds greater depth to my understanding of the work and the experience gained helps plan the course of future projects. I strive to build furniture that is contemporary in nature yet maintains a quality that will be practical and attractive for generations to come.

Flawless imperfections

Basic experimental wood fabrication. The concept of this table is represented in the cracked top , which is a reminder of how imperfections can be something beautiful. I worked with straight lines, circles, and simple see throughs, to give it a little twist. I was moved by the combination of the modern and the traditional, using dark rich walnut and glass, which are two materials that mesh really well. Specifications: 18” L x 18”H x 18”D 3/4” walnut 1/4” Glass

Le petit

Le petit is a high back chair with a complementary foot rest and together they both represent a small delicate throne. Inspired by patterns and vivid colors, Le Petit has straight forward simple geometry, subtle curves on the arm rests and a detailed back; upholstered with a Jaclyn Smith Birmingham Pecan Fabric pattern and expossed exotic wood veneer. Specifications: Chair 52”L x 22”W x 21”D Foot rest 18”L x 18”W x 19” D Jaclyn Smith Birmingham Pecan Fabric #10447084 5 yards

The objective was to design a piece using Solid Works computer software and develop a rapid prototype using a 3D printing machine and laser cutter.

The idea was to design a shelf that would hold one accessory.

I used acrylic for the shelf to make it seem as if the vase is floating. It has foliage cut outs that merge on to the wall. The FDM printed vase follows the same concept as the shelf, with foliage cut-outs.

Tangled Series

Turn on the lights... Clip, hang, snap! The idea behind Tangled Series was to design a storage piece for accessories. I designed this collection so each piece could work as a lamp shade for vanity lighting, or just as functional scultural pieces. Materials: Wire Hemp Polyester string Fabric Stiffener

Perfect Fit

A book shelf that only holds the three most important books in the world... Perfect fit explores the concept of interdependence; how one object does not work without the other. The REN carved vessel has a round bottom so it can’t stand on its own, it locks into the shelve’s cut through rail to stay in place. Specifications: 8” REN vessel, 18”x 12” acrylic shelf
