Summer Internship Array HFS Healthcare Facilities Design During this summer internship the work executed was very diverse. Some weeks it was focussed on modelling in 3D and creating renderings for different areas of the projects. Other weeks the work mostly consisted in developing architectural drawings in 2D and creating construction documents. Additionally, two site visits took place where field measurements were taken of the existing buildings where renovations were going to be done.

The work presented on these pages is from two different projects that the firm was working on. The work for the internship consisted in modeling the interior spaces, applying the materials to the 3D model and rendering different views of each area. With the renderings done, meetings were set up with the clients to discuss possible design changes. Finally, an interior materials board was created for each project and submitted to the client for approval.

HF-Urban Farm serves as the model for urban growth by blending technology with natural growing methods. While vertical farming is a generic methodology for all cities, HF-Urban Farm draws deeply from the specific site and historical contexts of Philadelphia. Therefore, the concepts of shifting density and the subsequent need for interweaving spaces have emerged to inform the design approach for the project.

A market space carves itself into the grade plane to lend itself to become owned by the community through allocated vendor spaces.

In the levels above, interior parks are created by weaving planes of hydroponic planter systems with light and circulation.

These images are a collection of work from 2011’s summer internship. The construction company EDECONSA S.A. (Quito, Ecuador) requested renderings for the building overall, highlighted areas of the project and renderings for each specific apartment unit that was going to be sold. These images were put together in a sales folder to be distributed to clients, they were published in brochures and were included in different advertisement banners to showcase the project.

Located in Trastevere, one of the most well known neighborhoods in Rome, the project has a playful appearance with its terracotta panel facade and varying ceiling heights. The main focus is the playground which has its own unique character.

The plaground is based on the idea of a continuous ramp that will promote vertical and horizontal movement through the space. There are two main suspended platforms where the main activities will take place.

Walnut St Prison
Located in Center City Philadelphia, the Walnut St Prison is an inconic building. Even though it is specifically designed to accommodate the activities of a penitentiary, the building still blends into its surrounding context. The project consists of three main towers that are interconnected by sky bridges. The towers are elevated off the ground for security purposes. The vertical connecting element is the structural concrete core devoted to circulation in every tower. Structural Model

The prison has a rotating system for the use of the common areas. This prevents the inmates in each pod from having contact with other pods to avoid conflicts among them. The inmates spend half of the day in their own pod and the other half rotating between activities in the prison.

The facade consists in thick metal panels with different configurations. They also serve as desks and beds for the inmates’ pods. There are 4 main configurations that give variety to the facade and the interior pod layouts. The recreation areas have curtain walls to allow more light in the space.

This public recreational complex, located along the banks of the Schuylkill first River, consists floor plan on a series of piers influenced by the strong horizontals composed by the most prominent structures in the city grid: the four main bridges. A louver system wraps around the south and west facades of each structure, therefore acting as a passive shading system.

The building is based on the idea of having a slopping site completely immersed in nature. The structure therefore flows through the site. As the visitor experiments the building he or she encounters two basic nodes: the cafe and the gallery space.

Going with the concept of nature, the building has wood as its structural system along with a series of loadbearing masonry walls. These walls are positioned so they can block harsh eastern and western sun. They also give the opportunity to have open north and south facades.

Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia Headquarters

Habitat Philadelphia is a non-profit entity that focuses its efforts in building multiple homes in a community for low income families. As Habitat Philadelphia continues growing, the hopes for the near future are to increase the number of built and rehabilitated homes and to get a Re-Store. This component will create the possibility for more donations to be accepted and obtain as much help as possible. Structural Model

The main dividing element in the project is the stone masonry wall that is part of an existent building in the site. This wall is being reused in the HFHP Headquarters and acts as the division between the warehouse and the re-store. The wall’s structure is reinforced by concrete “bracing” elements that are also part of the overall structural system of the building.

The facade is influenced from the various colorful murals around the site. The three primary colors are used to create various panels that provide shading to the interior spaces of the re-store and the common lounge space on the third floor.

Some of the panels are attached to the curtain wall behind them and some others are inset between the mullions. This allows for depth variation on the facade and different shading conditions for the interior spaces.

The building combines personal living space and professional workspace in such a way that neither is compromised. the organizing principle of the edifice is its load bearing wall structure going across the site which gave the opportunity to open the front facade for daylight and ventilation.

The design of the facade relares to how light is required to enter certain spaces but should be blocked from entering other areas.

Residential Rowhouse The design of this single family rowhouse is based on the idea of breaking away from the typical rowhouse design and treating the facade differently by stepping it inward. In order for this to be possible the top floors are supported by diagonal columns that are present throughout different parts of the house like the living room and the back yard.

Community Hill Cemetery The masterplan of the Community Hill Cemetery was based on the rigorous site analysis that was done before the design of the project. This analysis included studies about topography, drainage, vegetation, surrounding site context, among other criteria. The masterplan’s main elements are three prominent burial plot structures, a crematorium, a mausoleum, a ceremonial building as well as a big pond for meditation actitivites around it.

Burial Plots The burial plots design was influenced by the Aztec Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, Mexico. The burial plot area contains stepped looking structures that are open to the outside. The roof is held by numerous thin columns which represent each of the grave markers. water leads the entrance and also surrounds each structure to give a sense of peacefullness once the visitor is inside.

Recreation of the Gamble House (1909) designed by Charles and Henry Greene.

The project was focused in understanding the architectural language of plans, sections, elevations and perspectives by hand drafting the blueprints of the house. Additionally a model of the house was built to scale.

Mondrian in 3D
Experimenting and understanding the idea of a”section cut” by recreating a shoe with layers of cardboard.

Piet Mondrian New York City I 1941-42
Horizontal Layers
Based on Piet Mondrian’s paintng New York City I, the project consists in “extruding” volumes from the 2D panting to create a 3D model. The concepts of depth and hierarchy are studied through 2D and axonometric drawings as well as through 3D models. Vertical Layers
