Women and THE PROCESS TOWARDS ARCHIECTURE WITH f a m i l y c e n t e r SOCIAL IMPACT
The project started with a diagnosis of the neighborhood of San Jose de la Comuna. This neighborhood, despite being located within the limits of Quito Metropolitan District, has its own political administration. It is one of the poorest neighborhoods in Quito. The diagnosis determined the need for spaces for leaning and recreation and it showed that one of the biggest problems in the area is domestic and gender violence. For this reason, the project proposes a space of shelter and attention for women in need, accompanied by a community market, a library and a medical center. Applying the proposed process: 1. The project will have an impact on the community and serve the entire neighborhood. 2. 4 sessions of participatory design where held with women from San José de la Comuna, affirming the need for the proposed architecural program and getting an input on the design itself. 3. During the process of research and analysis the following community assets where found. a. The views and scenery. b. Local materials that can be used: adobe bricks, wood, metal scraps collected by the community. c. Labor: People on San José de la Comuna are traditionally builders. 4. Apply SEA (Environmental Evaluation System) and SEED (Social Economic Environmental Design) parameters. `

-DXPDESIGN STUDIO -dxpstands for ‘diseño experimental’ (experimental design). The studio started on 2014, and we consider it a design ‘laboratory’ where we research on material use, production methods and design use and applications. Our use of human-centered approaches and methods like design-thinking has make us pioneers on the design field in Ecuador. We develop solutions, concepts, products and image, with the premise that everything can be redefined and strengthened. Our services are applied in: urban planning, architecture, interior design, product design, decoration, furniture and lighting, brand development, branding identity and graphic strategies. We are passionate about finding solutions that optimize and perfect great ideas.

PORTFOLIO ENCUENTROS DE ARQUITECTURA
‘Encuentros de Arquitectura’ are conferences on architecture held annually. Guests are architects with different backgrounds and views on architecture. Primaria decides the theme for the conferences, trying to find topics that lead the conversation to the basis or fundamentals of architecture. Guest speakers are asked not to talk about their work, but their views on the proposed topic. The last edition had 12 guest speakers and over 200 DANIELA TERAN
attendees. The event is completely organized and curated by Primaria.

GALLERY
+Arte is a space dedicated to art from various perspectives, it has an exhibition area and a workshop area. This project required a space that can change constantly to accommodate each exhibit, and that is simple enough, so the pieces of art are always the protagonists. In the project, the assembly and dismantling process of exhibitions was analyzed, which are carried out at least once a month. A simple system was proposed to do it easily: the lightning fixtures can be moved and placed in varied places of electrified rails installed on the ceiling, which allows placing the works on any spot or wall of the gallery. In addition, the design of the gallery was complemented with simple furniture elements in steel and wood.

The furniture designed for the gallery was thought considering the same requisites the space had in general. Furniture can be easily disassembled, moved and stored. All the pieces are self-supporting and fit together so there is no need of using screws or other additional fittings.

NUEVA VIDA MARIANO ACOSTA
As part of the studio practice, -dxp- started to work on social projects. dxp-org is born as a branch within the studio that designs experiences, services and products to improve the lives of people living in vulnerable situations. We work directly with communities or as consultants for other organizations. Part of our objectives is to research on important topics and questions. On January 2018 dxp-org will curate on the Lab US in Quito, creating a Sustainability Urban Laboratory to research on solutions to the social and community problems created by the change of the urban context.

n u e va v i d a Nueva Vida is an organization that receives children on their facilities after school to help them with homework and watch them while their parents work away from home. They work with children from low-income households. Nueva Vida approached dxp-org for the architecture design for a new building for their facilities. dxp-org based the design on the results obtained on a participatory process with the children, teachers and parents that will use the building.
M a r i a n o a c o s ta Mariano Acosta is a small town on the mountains on the northern part of Ecuador. They are currently facing a difficult problem of migration, which is leaving the town unpopulated and mainly inhabited by elderly people. dxp-org is facilitating a process, working with the community and researching on possible solutions for this problem. This project is held using design thinking.
