Stratified Space Washington University in St Louis Elena Canovas Degree Project Fall 2012 Grand Center is Saint Louis’s centralized arts and culture district. This market/restaurant/exhibition space aims to add a layer to the area that does not exist there today, daily activity. Here, the temporal nature of the programs are considered, containing elements that can be active together or independent of one another and providing a public space for visitors and residents alike. Activity is expressed on the exterior, with levels of transparency varying by program and layer.

Transformation in the Digital Age Washington University in St Louis Christof Jantzen and Paul Donnelly Vertical Studio Spring 2011 At its peak the Lemp Brewery in St Louis was one of the largest breweries operating in the United States. When Prohibition was implemented in 1920, the company ceased operation and sold the complex to the International Shoe Company. Today, many of the original buildings still stand on the site. The most striking of which are the former grain silos. The program for this adaptive re-use is a data center and art gallery. In addition to the art gallery, a workshop/fabrication space is included to facilitate installations and pieces being created on site. The building is iconic in the area and the facades have been mostly preserved. The added upper level volume gives the already distinctive building a new presence in the area, while maximizing flexibility in the gallery spaces. Four of the silos are kept in-tact and reinforced to support the gallery volume. The data center is located at the basement level and extends to the west.

The Scour Washington University in St Louis Sarah Cowles Landscape Studio Fall 2011 Taum Sauk Mountain State Park was the site of a catastrophic event when the Taum Sauk Resevoir burst, releasing a billion gallons of water in less than half an hour. This water cut a swath through the dense forest, exposing bedrock and washing tonnes of plant material and debris into the valley below. This earthwork project, set immediately after the event proposes sorting and using tthe debris the foundation for a visitors center, giving views to the scarred hill and new reservoir.
