6

Community I was drawn to the idea of community, what defines a community, and how a community interacts. I was fascinated with the concept of paying it forward, random acts of kindness, and “trail magic. And how individuals self-sacrifice for the greater good of the group.

Daniel Chaffee

7

Bulky

On the Market The market for coolers is very limited to individual lunch boxes or very bulky hard shell carriers. Nothing suited for a group of hikers.

Persona Diego Munoz Age: 35 Family of 4 An active, outdoors husband regularly explores new campgrounds, forests, and National Parks with his family for their vacations. Diego is a professional chef, and an instructor atLe Cordon Bleu. Duality is very important to him for his busy schedule.

Daniel Chaffee

9

Inspiration Ideas were derived from looking at what elements facilitate interaction among a community. What is valued and what is shared. While looking at the form nature takes as a life bearing vessel.

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

10

Ideation I was struck with the idea that at a primal level, a community is connected by food. I took this notion and adapted it for a community on-the-go. User interaction was an area I wanted to focus on. I believe making the user interact with the backpack in an interesting and unusual way would make it stand out in the market. It is these little obscure interactions that are remembered and keep the users returning.

Mock-ups Creating bags in half scale and full scale helped to learn a lot about their sewing patterns. Also which methods would work, and which were impractical.

Daniel Chaffee

19

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

20

Users Tech savvy families and young couples who use their television to surf the web, play music, and watch Netflix. They own many touch screen devices and game consoles.

Daniel Chaffee

21

Market Research Traditional remotes require a certain finesse to use and a mastery over an overwhelming number of buttons. Their skill to operate comes with time through trial and error.

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

22

Remote Analysis

Hide and Seek

Antequated Style

A remote’s slim figure allows it to hide between couch cushions, in the shadows, or even in plain site.

Daniel Chaffee

23

New Technologies

Missmatched buttons, small fonts, and obtuse grids create confusion for the simplest tasks.

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

Gaming technology can be used to update remotes. Joysticks will ease on screen navigation while touch screens can create shortcuts.

SaWra-9A Objective Feminize the chainsaw for a matriarch home, using Deiter Rams’ 10 principles of design.

Daniel Chaffee

29

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

30

Who’s buying homes? After married couples, single women are the largest demographic of home buyers; occupying nearly a fifth of the market. This niche market consists of women in white-collar occupations with a fast-pace lifestyle.

Daniel Chaffee

31

Market Research

Expensive

The median price range is lacking in options for the average home user. There is a market opportunity for a straight-forward, and easy to use chainsaw.

Young Generation X & Old Generation Y This group ranges from late 20s to early 40s. They are the primary home buyers in the market. Coming from all walks of life, this generation is moving out of apartments and into the suburbs.

35

Ideation Current chainsaws are ridden with superfluous forms and curves. My designs try to reduce the form to what is necessary for function. Therefor making the components used the only design elements.

chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com

36

Form Development The evolution consisted of examining the handle to motor to body ratio. Eventually leading toa simple, practical, and ergonomic form.

Daniel Chaffee

37

Color Study When asking women which colors they find most offensive, the universal responses were pinks or pastels. To contrast this, darker...more royal colors were explored. eventually leading to a deep purple.

Inspiration I looked at different ways to cut wind resistence, both manufactured and natural methods. For aesthetics, I wanted to break as far away from traditional cars as possible. For this thing to be fast, I knew it had to look otherworldy. Daniel Chaffee

69

Ideation The rocket car is a synthesis of different inspirations. To increase acceleration, the body must have a protruding center spine similar to that of car spikes. This spine lent itself to new instectoid shapes. chaffeedaniel@yahoo.com
