FOR A FOOD CRITIC
Situated on the quiet banks of a small lake in northeastern Kansas, this retreat is an exploration of architecture as the main by-product of a function-first design mentality. The space was intended solely for the use of a professional food critic as a weekend getaway for entertaining his or her guests. In addition to an extremely function-specific program, a series of building constraints were also introduced, posing a challenging design environment in an early studio setting.
EARLY PARTI DIAGRAM
The exisiting site is home to a historic relic in the form of three concrete walls and a wooden post (see right). The program called for a non-disruptive design primarily within the walls of the relic, allowing extension only past one wall. This constraint presented an opportunity to really put the southeast facing facade of the building to work. Through the thoughtful stacking of private space (restroom / bedrooms) within the confines of the relic, the public space was then capable of being molded into a welcoming environment for entertaining guests. The extension of the building to the southwest additionally allows for optimal views of the lake, maximum interior daylighting, and highly efficient cross ventilation.

The placement of the structural supports opens up ample public space on the exterior of the building as well. The supports help suspend the extension above the ground, providing a small patio area below and a selfsustaining roof garden above. In addition to providing structural support, the steel also houses a watering system, which is crucial to the longevity of the roof-top garden.

ALDORF EDUCATION SCHOOL
Waldorf schools implement a unique way of teaching children. Founded in 1919, the first Waldorf school was established to provide children with an education driven by a humanistic approach. This approach placed heavy importance on the role of imagination in learning, developing a type of thinking that utilizes creative and analytical components. Located on the Kaw River, this site is quite ideal for a school that places heavy emphasis on non-traditional activities ranging from gardening to eurythmy - an expressive movement art.

HALL
In a world of static architecture, is it irrational to visualize architecture as a machine? The main objective of the Chicago Harbor Concert Hall project was to challenge this particular idea that has existed for centuries by imagining a new, dynamic building - one with movable parts that acted like a machine.

EGG EMERGING FROM HANGAR
INTERIOR OF HALL
Situated on the harbor of Lake Michigan, the main goal of this project was to design a very specific type of concert venue - one that was of course dynamic, but at the same time proceeded to carry out Daniel Burnham’s unrealized master plan for the city of Chicago. There are two main parts to this particular design idea, both of which are referred to as the “hangar” and the “egg.” The hangar is the stationary part of the hall located on the shoreline that houses the most basic functions of a concert hall (ie ticketing, coat check, restrooms, bar/restaurant, lounge, etc). Parked inside of this hangar is the egg, or the actual hall itself. Patrons would board the concert hall prior to the start of the show from inside of the hangar. As the show and nightfall draw near, a carefully planned spectacle occurs near the shores of the lake. The egg itself emerges from the hangar on a rail system, and slowly ventures out to a small island in the middle of the Chicago Harbor. This spectacle is symbolic in a way where the egg is essentially the crown jewel of the city, on display at the grandest scale for all to see and enjoy. This rail system and island also form the northern portion of Burnham’s unrealized plan, connecting to the southern portion through way of a large promenade. Not only does this concert hall provide an amazing site for visitors from all across the globe, the connecting walkway allows for breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline as well.

While much of the area appears to be private - primarily for the use of showgoers - it is in fact a building that the entire public can interact with at any time. Adjacent to the main entrance, there is a set of stairs that lead to the walkway which extends to the harbor island. The rail system which allows the hall to transverse the harbor additionally doubles up as a pathway for pedestrians. This pathway allows for circulation within the hangar and even underneath the hall, stretching completely to the island park. The park-like atmosphere, as mentioned earlier, connects to the southern wing of the harbor via a curved promenade. It is designed in a curved fashion in an effort to complete the Burnham plan while at the same time embracing the inner harbor and skyline.

This comprehensive project investigated the opportunities and challenges with a potential expansion of the existing School of Architecture at the University of Kansas. Proposed on the campus, the desired site location presented many challenges to the architects. These challenges included maintaining the existing context, creating a connection to adjacent buildings, and providing ample circulation in and around the site. Topics such as sustainability and detailing were also heavilystressedthroughout the entire design process.

SITE PLAN
The proposed design would connect to the existing School of Architecture on the third floor. By placing this connection above the ground level, existing site connections and circulation are maintained throughout. The building is split into two separate wings, connected through a series of walkways and a large glass atrium. This atrium would allow for ample natural daylighting to be filtered throughout the entire addition. It also allows for a very pleasant space for students and professors to interact with eachother something that the current conditions glaringly lack. Within this space, most of the public functions take place on the lowest level due to easy access, with private space then thoughtfully stacked above. The positioning of the addition also creates a quaint inner courtyard with the Art + Design building to the west.

NTERNSHIP PARIS - ATELIERS JEAN NOUVEL

Internship at Ateliers Jean Nouvel Paris, France 18 weeks Brian Wait
AJN CHARLEROI, BELGIUM BEIJING, CHINA DOHA, QATAR
During the 2011-2012 academic school year, I had the privilege to work with one of the architects I admire the most - Jean Nouvel. I have always been inspired by his designs and ideas about architecure. By working in his presence for four months, I was able participate in the implementation of his design philosophy on an international level. During my time at the firm, I was given the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects including a police headquarters in Belgium, a national museum in Qatar, and an ongoing international design competition for a national museum of art and culture in China.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF QATAR DOHA, QATAR
AJN A good portion of my time at AJN was spent working closely with a team on the development of interior galleries for the the National Museum of Qatar. Located in the city of Doha, the museum is intended to serve as the main storyteller of the history of Qatar. All final work was produced with a combination of Rhino, VRay, Photoshop, and After Effects. It should be noted that not all of the work portrayed in this section was completed by me individually, but rather through a collaborative effort. The images were carefully selected in hopes of clearly conveying the type of work I produced while further developing this project.
These images represent the level of detail we were working with when rendering and editing within Rhino and Photoshop. Specific attention to detail was taken on all displays and models so the clients could really have a sense of what it would be like to experience these galleries first hand. Due to the majority of Qatar’s inhabitants being nomadic, many physical objects / artifacts have not yet been recovered. This presented the design team with unique challenge in the sense that the museum we were designing had very few objects to actually put on display. Because of this, a great amount of time and effort went in to ensuring the story of Qatar would be conveyed through use of digital projections and interactive displays. It was imperative to the client that we were able to communicate the immersive nature of each and every gallery.
POLICE HEADQUARTERS CHARLEROI, BELGIUM
AJN Another project I contributed to was the 21-story police headquarters tower located in Charleroi, Belgium. My main tasks included the production of a 3D model in Rhino (below) of the building and surrounding site. This model would later be used in final construction documents. Due to the technical nature this model would be used in later, it was crucial to give the closest attention to detail throughout the entire process.
