Daniel Cronin | Portfolio 310.869.7419 archi.cronin@gmail.com 22.10.2015
My name is Daniel Cronin and I would like to thank you for taking the time to review my CV and Portfolio. I am confident that I have those specific qualities that you are looking for in a candidate. Over the past several years I have been incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to work in a variety of market sectors. This experience has made me very well rounded and has further instilled the notion that great design is varied and universally applied across multiple project typologies, regardless of restrictions, tastes, and program. I have overseen teams in the interior design department at an international clothing line, designed interiors for ultra-high end residential projects, branded restaurants, photographers, designed websites, and designed public park facilities for the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. Through each of these projects I have come to recognize the importance curating the spacial experience of the end user while maintaining relevant contextual presence and a highly functional and organized operation that upholds the client/brand desires and standards. I am well versed in the process and rigor of design and architecture. I am aware and knowledgeable of building codes as well as disabled access compliance and the various construction types and methodologies. I am a capable and diligent worker, and I am skilled in all the necessary computer programs (ACAD, Adobe Suite, Sketchup, Microsoft Office) with a keen eye for communicating ideas through clean concise methods. I believe that inspiration and knowledge can be gained from nearly every facet of life, and that experiences can greatly shape one’s perspective. We as designers and architects are lucky to be so exposed to so many degrees of existence. As a native of and current resident of Los Angeles, I understand the unique social climate of, within, and around the LA basin and I am humbled that I have had the opportunity to have had an impact on it. Thank you for taking the time to review my application and I look forward to further discussing this opportunity with you.
Yours sincerely, Daniel P. Cronin

Hollywood Pool & Bath House Los Angeles, California
CLIENT:
City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Engineering STATUS:
Completed 2015 COST:
$4,500,000 BRIEF:
The newly completed Hollywood Swimming Pool & Bath House is intended to replace an existing facility constructed in the early 1950’s. The new structure is on the northeast edge of an urban community multi-use recreation park. The overall park site also includes a multi-purpose gymnasium and sports fields all within the City of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation system. The project scope includes the construction of a new bath house, pool deck, water slide with reception pool, and new 125 ft. x 75 ft. pool with new filtration systems and equipment. Programmatically, the bath house consists of a central cashier that acts to control building access to the men’s and women’s changing rooms, while maintaining clear lines of visibility to the pool deck. A family changing room, lifeguard restroom, first aid, lifeguard training room, and storage complete the program, while a glazed lifeguard office monitors pool deck activity. Formally the building maintains its security by an enclosing skin scaled to a height of nearly ten feet with limited penetrations of strategically located openings. A clerestory rests on top of the perimeter wall providing natural light. A dramatic faceted roof profile expresses energy in motion. The intention is to create an inviting and exciting new facility for the community that brings people together. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer in charge of design renders and concept imagery and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project.

Branded Retail Environments National Healthcare Provider
CLIENT:
Undisclosed STATUS:
Completed Design COST:
N/A
BRIEF:
This project, for a national healthcare provider, focuses on the branding of various individual public & retail program elements located within a new, or inserted into an existing, medical facility. The initial project was to develop a cohesive, branded, floor plan for the provider’s template medical office building, consisting of all public & retail spaces tied together through circulation through a guided process of “experiences.” We were later tasked with designing all aspects of the individual “experiences,” 9 in total. These experiential brand guidelines promote spaces that create a positive patient experience through well thought-out layouts, the use of creative materials, and designed colors. Color choice significantly affects the emotional state of patients, clinicians, and staff. Materials and finishes impact the overall character of a physical environment. And a thoughtful, well designed, plan can easily guide an individual through a space with little stress. For example, color selections for a transition space, such as an entry lobby, where patients and staff pass through quickly, can be active and stimulating. In contrast, a space such as a waiting area benefits from colors which are soothing and calm, providing privacy and refuge. In summary, the careful, conscious, and selective use of colors and materials can contribute to an environment that promotes health, wellness and healing. We designed the greeting station, reception, gift shop, pharmacy, ophthalmology store, coffee shop, restrooms, farmer’s market, and waiting experiences. The designs have been implemented on a national level. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer responsible for all design drawings, renders and later all working drawings for component kit of parts implementation and fabrication,

Hansen Dam Ranger Station Lake View Terrace, California
CLIENT:
City of Los Angeles, Bureau of Engineering STATUS:
Completed 2013 COST:
$7,500,000 BRIEF:
The Ranger Station & Visitor Center planned for Hansen Dam is a much-needed facility for a diverse community and regional resource located in Lake View Terrace, CA. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1940’s, Hansen Dam is vital for the flood control protection of the lower portion of the San Fernando Valley and the city of Los Angeles. The proposed Ranger Station & Visitor Center will become a point of control, orientation, and security specifically for the western edge of the park. The new 5000 sq. ft. building contains a visitor and community orientation lobby with trail maps, restroom facilities, and a public information counter. It will provide visual control to the western park entrance at Osborne Street. Offices for the recreation staff and Park Rangers are also housed, including locker rooms, and shared meeting facilities. The linear building is planned to incorporate existing trees on the site while maximizing views, natural light, and ventilation. The most prominent iconic formal design gesture is the sculptural folded roof form, resembling a large tent over the building structure. A public gathering space for the community designed with landscape cobble, native boulders, indigenous grasses and horse hitching posts that are artfully incorporated into the site design. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer and Assistant Project Manager, in charge of design renders and concept presentations and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project as well as coordinated with consultant firms and contractors.

North Hollywood Medical Offices North Hollywood, California
CLIENT:
Kaiser Permanente STATUS:
Completed 2013 COST:
$7,300,000 BRIEF:
Frank R. Webb Architects was commissioned to plan and design a new 18 provider, medical office space in an existing 9-story office building in North Hollywood CA. Completed in 2009 the office tower is a striking and beautifully modern building that Kaiser saw as a perfect fit for the young and hip demographic that they were targeting in the area. As a lease space in a building with a strong design, We developed consensus among the different stake holders to bring a strong modern aesthetic while incorporating Kaiser’s branding and litany of standards and requirements. The tenant improvements include two floors of the 9-story building resulting in 40,000 sq. ft. The 8th & 9th floors house central reception, conference center, health education, health store, administration, facility services, clinical lab, imaging services, Pharmacy, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, OB/Gyn., and a strategically located shell space to allow for future growth. The task of program planning this complex fast tracked project was further challenged to fit the vast program and departments with sensitivity to the many related adjacencies and rigid programmatic requirements but to also work within an extremely irregular and constrained building shape. We took advantage of the natural light, views, and height related to context to bring in striking views of the valley, not only for the customers, but also the client. Floor to ceiling windows were left as exposed as possible, clerestory windows in inner hallways allow for natural light to penetrate beyond the outer rooms to interior waiting areas and hallways. This building will serve as a model for future T.I. and ground-up construction in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer in charge of design renders and concept imagery and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project.

Alondra Park Pool, Waterplay & Skatepark Lawndale, California
CLIENT:
County of Los Angeles, Dept. of Public Works STATUS:
Completed 2013 COST:
$13,700,000 BRIEF:
The Alondra Park Swimming Pool, Waterplay & Skate Park project located in Lawndale, California, is part of the Alondra Community Regional Park. The existing 84-acre park operated and maintained by the County of Los Angeles, is a rich community and cultural resource consisting of an 18-hole public golf course, sand volleyball court, gymnasium, children’s play area, picnic facilities, ball fields, and lake. The existing lake immediately adjacent to the project site, along with meadow lawns and woodlands, contributes to the park and functions as a natural landscaped habitat. The specific project site was intended to replace and improve a former 2-acre, 6 ft. deep zero depth entry pool. The programmed design amenities include a new 75 yard by 75 meter competitive swimming pool with two 1-meter diving boards and a covered spectator viewing area, a 3000 sq. ft. splash pad with multiple interactive features, a 14,000 sq. ft. in-ground skate park, picnic facilities, and a 6500 sq. ft. bath house building programmed to house men and women’s dressing rooms, recreation staff, lifeguard offices, and bag check. The program also includes a community/recreation multi-purpose room and concessions. The master plan is strongly driven and shaped to focus on view corridors to the existing lake. The master plan alleviates the existing visual disconnect, by placing and sculpting the major program elements as a group of individual forms, positioned to allow views to the existing lake from the site entrance, framed above by a grand covered open air portico acting as observation overlook. Rolling landscaped mounds are incorporated to negate the impact of required security fencing around the centrally located swimming pool to provide an infinite view from the pool to the existing lake beyond. Bold architectural forms, decorative and colorful hardscape features, and drought tolerant landscaping form a richly layered community landmark. Designed with sustainable strategies and environmental consciousness, the project achieved a LEED GOLD certification. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer in charge of design renders and concept imagery and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project.

South Los Angeles M.O.B. Los Angeles, California
CLIENT:
Kaiser Permanente STATUS:
Completed 2012 COST:
$7,500,000 BRIEF:
Located in South Los Angeles, this new 2-story 15,000 sq. ft. building provides a much needed facility to serve an expanding member base for Kaiser Permanente. Challenged by a need to provide a protected and yet inviting presence, We sculpted an architectural jewel-box with an assemblage of durable materials protected by a perimeter landscape screen. The project team was further challenged by an aggressive design program that restricted the building envelope by virtue of parking demands, building setbacks, and future street improvements. A secure parking area, defined by fencing and an artful composition of sustainable landscaping, leads members to a glazed canopy that defines the building entrance. Members can also reach the entrance via public sidewalk, passing under the cantilevered second floor public waiting area. Inside, the public lobby links to the second floor through an open vertical stairway volume. Functionally, the building houses an imaging suite including General Radiography and Mammography, Phlebotomy Lab, Pharmacy, Community Outreach Conference Room, Administration and a flexible Primary Care Suite that will support several different modalities, such as Pediatrics, OB/Gyn and General Surgery Consultation. Adjacent to the building’s southeast corner a secure and intimate team bonding landscaped outdoor dining space completes this exciting project. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer and Assistant Project Manager, in charge of design renders and concept presentations and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project as well as coordinated with consultant firms and contractors.

Indio Juvenile & Family Courthouse Indio, California
CLIENT:
Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) STATUS:
Completed Design COST:
TBD
BRIEF:
Frank R. Webb Architects was commissioned to program and design a new 68,000 sq. ft. 5 courtroom juvenile and family courthouse in the city of Indio, CA. The 4 acre project site is ideally positioned to serve the expanding needs of the Riverside County Justice System, simultaneously strengthening the image of the court within the county and community. The site is well served by public transportation, while the streets bordering the site allow for a logical separation for both public and secure/service access to the site. The 2-story building and secure basement structure will reflect the stability and traditions of the judicial system. A grand covered entrance plaza will provide a welcoming and open gesture to the community. Along with clarity of interior planning organization, the strategic courtroom location allows for public waiting areas to enjoy views of the southern and northern mountain ranges. There was a unique opportunity to evoke the language of the desert and mountain region in the building design, while relating to the unique spirit of place. The courthouse will be of timeless beauty and authenticity, belonging to the desert. Careful consideration will be given to the role of passing sunlight, shadow and shade. Natural materials, indigenous landscape and desert colors have been selected for their durability and appropriateness. The project is targeted to achieve a LEED silver certification. ROLE(S):
Junior Designer in charge of design renders and concept imagery and drawings. Produced both design and construction drawings for this project.

North Campus Beautification Master Plan Panorama City, California
CLIENT:
Kaiser Permanente STATUS:
Completed Design COST:
TBD
BRIEF:
Frank Webb Architects had a unique opportunity to implement the new Kaiser branding concepts at a campus level. We were tasked to explore innovative landscape design, architecture, and branding concepts to create a cohesive medical facility campus that would be engaged to its community and relate to its context. Spanning over half a century, the Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center campus had experienced significant growth and change. The existing campus lacked a sense of cohesiveness, and identification consistent with the brand image of Kaiser Permanente. First, we identified the key site issues and opportunities and developed overall project goals to strengthen the presence and impact of the campus on the local community. We developed concepts and a phased implementation plan to address the issues faced by the campus; provide a sense of arrival, improve way-finding and creating a campus core, create and ‘active’ ribbon for at site perimeter for public use. We analyzed the site and surrounding context, taking data from Kaiser, and developed studies and diagrams to illustrate how the campus could positively affect the community. These concepts were presented to the campus board and gained their approval. Kaiser will be implementing these improvements over the coming years. ROLE(S):
