Daniel Daum | Design Portfolio 2015

HELLO WORLD! I am Daniel, industrial designer. From a very young age, I have had a passion for design with the result that now I am curious about the world. I am simply thrilled at the prospect of studying and acting in a field that is a hobby - or rather - having a passion that is a career. Describing me in a couple of words: I have a positive attitude and a burning desire to solve problems ranging from the big picture to the fine details ofvizual design. Empathetic and inquisitive, I'm a team player to the core and like to work my ass off for things I love (look to the right). I highly respect and appretiate the beauty in all things and strive to better understand our changing world, that is one of no sectors: Banks competing against Facebook and Google; startups rule our market giants. Emotional and logical connection with customers became paramount, not only for designers, and the impact designers can create is

well received by CEO‘s. As we live in an increasingly interconnected world, I strongly believe that it is important for a designer who has to deal with social, ecological and economic problems to be exposed to as many different cultures as possible, in order to come up with applicable solutions. To strengthen my expertise in a creative and global perspective and to deepen my understanding how to challenge complex problems in our society, I have chosen to pursue a Master’s degree in System Design and Management at Keio University, Japan. The hands-on approach and focus on today's complexity on a global stage are not only in continuation with my undergraduate academic achievements thus far, but also a mix of skillsets, that will help me to pursue my goal of becoming a strategic leader and thinker. Let's leave the comfort zone of just designing decorative things . . .

into the aimed direction. Four single 12-Volt AC-motors push the wheels into direction. A 2-stage gear regulates the rotation-speed of the motor into an appropriate velocity of the wheel with the result that both an carefully slow motion and maximum speed of 20km/h is easy to operate. Through the steering mechanism is completely automized the user can hold the grips to get a maximum of driving stability. No physical action or movement of the steering is needed to change the direction. The technology of Laax consists out of just three crucial components: Speed-controler, motor and gear. The body of the gear is build in aluminium to reduce weight while the inner parts are made out of long lasting hardened steel.

technology

Mecanum wheels have the main purpase to enable omni-directional movement. That means via electrical speed controling Laax transforms the movement of the thumbsticks into different rotations of the wheels. It is not just the speed but also the direction of the wheels which regulate the movement of the vehicle. For example, if the user aims to drive straight forward the wheels are spinning in the same speed into same direction. However, when the user makes a curve while driving, the speed of the single wheels becomes different and when chnaging the direction into a parallel sidewards movement the wheels regulates their direction automatically. The user just need to move the thumbsticks

THE CONCEPT The sense of helplessness and indigence mediates a variety of conventional wheelchairs. People with disabilities often have the desire for fun and adventure and seek a way to pursue it. Wheelchairs restrict many lives and deprive them from the feeling of freedom. After interviewing many young wheelchair users, the subject of self-consciousness and selfawareness emerged as the key theme of this project. Contrary to the wide product range of care wheelchairs, the active variant should be a new option in the segment of lifestyle products.

FINAL DESIGN This is the perfect wheelchair for anyone who enjoys sport tuned agility and needs a wheelchair that can keep up with their lifestyle. With an enhanced grip and performance, and its aerodynamic frame, the wheelchair is ideal for physical activities and encourages the integration of people with spinal cord injuries and disorders into mainstream society. No more hand pollution, the unique luggage rack and a better performance provides freedom and improves the quality of life.

HARD HAT 2.0 Safety system for construction work regarding product intelligence and work efficiency

PREFACE

hard hat 2.0: labor protection, product intelligence and work efficiency on construction sites Among other industries, construction projects have high pressure of costs and deadlines. Heightened price competition permits profits only if construction workflows run smooth. The error potential is hughe because sites are manned with a multitude of workman to the same time. With progressive technological development we witness increasingly large

building structures and as a result more extensive projects will be realized on highest quality performance in shorter time. In future, therefore, the aquisition and use of information and communication techniรณlogy (ICT) could help to enhance both work efficiency and competitiveness of ventures and lead construction sites to safer and better secured workplaces.

Construction projects have an ever increasing complex nature and rise up faster then ever before. The number of supertall buildings, that means 300m+, in the world has tripled in the last seven years and within the next three, buildings surpass the 1000m limit. The problem is, aquisition and use of modern information technology lags behind all other industries.

noices and communication

Large-scale construction sites require long walks to get information. Much time is wasted in cases of walking back and furth to site offices or laying down work tasks to have experts visiting the facility to provide guidance

Uncertain instructions bear a risk with regard to either wrong transactions and errors or time losses because site workers have to go back to the initial information

Quality control, in particular, getting accurate documentation of events, progresses and conditions on sites are lagging.

Oral communication within a noisy environment requires often to stop running machines and encourages the non-usage of workers' ear protection.

56

RESEARCH

brief description “THIS TIME IT IS ALL ABOUT INFORMATION SHARING“

Research background Construction work remains a high risk industry. The work on sites is tough and the environment challenging and dangerous. In addition, construction is with its diversity of forms the most information-dependent industry. On-site communication and transfer of information are among the biggest challenges of quality management.

documantation of events, progress and conditions, need to be thoroughly optimized. Research need and originality Construction is one of the most information-dependent industries Building Construction Projects become - due to environmental needs and technological achievements - more and more complex. Particularly highrise buildings became exponentially more complex and tall and are designed and build in shorter time then ever before, with the result that today and in future communication between on-site workers, information sharing, and work documentation requires high preciseness and efficiency to operate profitable.

Construction projects have an ever increasing complex nature and rise up faster then ever before. The number of supertall buildings in the world (300m+) has tripled in the last seven years and within the next three, buildings surpass the 1000m limit. Used by all actors on sites, the system helps monitoring and managing individual on-site operations. Since it is used by each worker (safety helmets must be worn by everyone on-site), hard hats have optimum characteristics as a medium for such a communication platform. Hard hats, able to bring ICT to useres, could not only better active labor safety but especially the passive safety of all workers on sites. The management level provides licenses to all involved companies and their workers within a project. When starting their shifts workers logg in, in particular switch on the helmet, and be connected everywhere and every time on site. All work stages are organized

with the system and managers can evaluate work progresses on their monitor. With a camera in the helmet, a worker on site is able to contact a remote supporting expert (site manager, architect, supervisor, etc.) on-demand rather then laying down a work order to have the expert visiting the facility to provide appropriate guidance. Workers on site receive the guydance they need a task quickly and accurate. Expensive expert skill-sets are centalized instead of duplicated across the site with the result that both time and cost can be reduced significantly. The cloud system provides all relevant information to work steps, materials and site conditions and enables the connection between all parties on site. With use of ICT, workers can get any needful information on demand and support to any time.

RESEARCH PRODUCT DESIGN

A new face for a new era Precission, profession and toughness are the tributes, that shaped the design of the hard hat 2.0. What does a construction helmet need to look like a construction helmet? Since hard hats havn't seen any significant improvements for decades, this project was not only a challange in regard of functionality. Rather it creates an idea of how specialized and chanllanging construction work is. The product shapes a new face for the industry of tomorrow.
