History of Classroom Movements Common Classroom Movement: • Based around a model of factories (efficiency, obedience, repetition, uniformity) • Standard 900 sq. ft./classroom. (50 sq.ft. / Person - social research) • Individual desks with central corridor leading to an administrative center • Success determined by student test scores

History of Classroom Movements Progressive Classroom Movement:

?

• Emerged in the early 1900’s in critique of the current public educational system. • Focuses around child-centered education and project based learning • No standard for classroom arrangement or size. • Fell off entirely in the late 1970’s due to many factors.

Evaluation Methodologies Post Occupancy Evaluation - Building Assessment Quantitative and Qualitative research methodologies • Early POE methods were primarily quantitative and based success on test scores and student performance measurements. • Largely fell away due to disconnect between measurements and involvement in the consequences of those measurements.

Post Occupancy Evaluation - Building Assessment Quantitative and Qualitative research methodologies • Emergence of multi-modal research methodologies that incorporate both qualitative and quantitative measurements. • No single model for evaluation or assessment of space-learning relationships. Difficult to compare and build public buy-in.

Pedagogy

Culture

• Case specific research methodology is necessary. Different schools have different goals. Evaluation methodologies need to change - process doesn’t.

Evaluations Phase 1A: Evaluation - Matt Tracey |

Initial data collection and interviews of teachers students

Phase 1B: Evaluation - Wilder Research | Independent evaluation of 4C’s and Learning Studios

Survey Responses:

Satisfaction Student satisfaction Overall, 94 percent of students said that the learning studio environment makes them more excited to go to school (Figure 1). Slightly fewer (82%) said that they enjoy the challenging work that is part of the learning environment. 1.

Students reporting being in the studio makes them more excited to come to school (N=71)

No, 3%

NO!, 3%

Yes, 31%

“Most students (91%) reported that they learned a variety of ways to solve problems during the most recent school year.” Teachers “Several teachers said that the learning studio environment has changed their entire approach to and philosophy about education.”

YES!, 63%

Favorite aspects of the learning studio Students were given an opportunity to provide additional feedback about the learning studio environment. Most students described what they like the most about the environment, specifically the: n Classroom content. Thirteen students said that they have learned new information in the learning studio, and many students described specific topic areas or subjects they have learned about, such as math, reading, STEAM, and music. This school year has been good and I have learned a lot. I love math because we do stuff with our hands. I like extra math and splash math.

n Physical space. Twelve students commented on the physical space, especially the “comfortable” and flexible furniture, and many mentioned that the space helps them learn. I like the furniture because they’re soft so I can do my work when I'm comfortable. The studio helps me learn because it has more space.

North Park 21st Century Learning Studio Evaluation

Students “Most students (96%) reported that they have learned things that make them feel good about themselves and they are proud of the work they have done in school.”

9

Wilder Research, June 2014

“The biggest shift that teachers have identified is that they are now more comfortable giving their students choices and opportunities to take ownership over their learning.”

Evaluation Methodologies Post Occupancy Evaluation - Quantitative and Qualitative research methodologies at North Park

• Qualitative and Quantitative - choose the method that best illustrates the story at North Park. • Develop a method of coding and theory building that allows the data to emerge from observation. • Try NOT to seek results with preconceived notions. • Allow flexibility and interpretation. • Acknowledge researcher bias immediately - be open.

- Time influenced use of surface (comfort) - Extending engagement due to surface ownership with surface - Choice and ownership prolonged task engagement

4th grade - Surface | Task Observed : “John” • Student utilizes 2700 sq. ft (or equivalent 3 standard classrooms) to engage in task over a period of 2 hours • Student preformed two tasks (Multi-task, Recitation) • Used three surfaces • Location and type of furniture is large determinant in success of activity • The type of activity is largest factor for choice in group size

2hr

What have we/do we need to learn? Groups

Movement

• Groups are primarily a result of activities • Teachers control group size and group type

• • • •

Movement seems to be determined by activity and teacher/student choice. Hierarchy of movement - Activity | Teacher | Student Movement is dynamic and complex Movement creates ownership

Activities

• Activities are determined by curriculum and teachers • Each teacher enacts their activity differently (layout, surfaces and groups respond)

Surfaces

• Surfaces allow for increased comfort and length of engagement • Vertical work surfaces are highly correlated to group type (ex. Recitation task) • Students gain the most ownership by being able to chose their surface

Layout

• Layout allows for a greater choice in groups and movement • Layout allows for more options of surfaces for students and teachers

Time

• The amount of time students spend in a given activity is highly dependent on activity • Students spend more time engaged in activities because they are able to move, change groups and change location in the room

What have we/do we need to learn?

? Classroom Design

Learning

• There are relationships between all aspects of classroom design and their effect on learning (no one model or data set can articulate the relationship) • The process is just as important as the results (teachers and students build ownership over their classrooms when they are given choices to change and implement their ideas in the learning studios) • Ownership creates opportunities for engagement and care. • A rapid prototype process encourages change, adaptation and autonomy.

Next steps?

? Classroom Design

Learning

Phase 3 • Gather more comprehensive data on capacity of 3rd and 4th grade learning studios. • Integrate curriculum into research project - what influence does curriculum have over use of the space? (Partnership with Wendy Friedmeyer and CEHD Spring 2015) • Partner with independent research entity to gain more insight into learning studios. • Continue to develop a method for qualitative and quantitative data representation.
