FROM FRAGMENTS TO THE CITY
DESIGN ENHANCEMENT FOR UNESCO SMALL WILD GOOSE PAGODA AREA Prof.ssa Laura Anna Pezzetti - Prof. Carlo Libero Palazzolo - Prof. Liu Kecheng - Prof.ssa Carol Monticelli
The project is located in the millenary city of Xi’an, ancient imperial capital. The area the project faces is the one of Xiaoyanta Pagoda, an important building surviving Buddhist Fu Jian temple, dating back to the Tang Dynasty (581 A.D. - 901 A.D.). The design of the area aims at a triple objective: Protect the Pagoda complex (listed as a UNESCO site) and the fragility of its environmental features from the engulfing growth of the city through a project that reconstitutes its boundary, combining conservation and enhancement, through the realization of a circular cultural-museum system. Restore the order of the entire block where the old Tang Pagoda is part, that are still readable, bringing to light all the signs of certain historical stratification, integrating them into an urban project aiming at the regeneration of the urban structure. Connect this part of the city with the walled Ming city, thanks to an urban strategy that,

starting from the single fragment, arises to become the basic structure for the regeneration of the fabric of this portion of the city. Considering a planimetric point of view the structure reinterprets the ancient walls that constituted the Li-Fang block and the temple enclosure by means of two linear buildings that protect and redefine clearly the emptiness of the pagoda within the urban fabric, restoring the breath it had when it was designed. The project also aims at the regeneration of the Urban Village, where the major issue is to provide a home to families living in precarious sanitary and human conditions without loose the strong identity of the place.

NARRATING AN HISTORY: TANG WALL MUSEUM
In the western part of the block a “living wall” building marks the position of the ancient wall of the LI-Fang and protects the remains that will be found by the planned archaeological excavations. It constitutes a public walk on several levels both internally and on its coverage, in which narrow corridors exhibition rooms follow one another. The architectonical theme it deals with is the one of the dig. To dig into the ground in order to rediscover past ruins and traces and to create a museum path that allows the visitor to understand the past position and shape of the Li-Fang wall, narrating its history. The project also equips the background of the new park above the traces of the ancient main axis of Tang city. Foundamental part of the new design proposal, it is completely built on the ancient zhang measure and it runs along the north-south direction. The park fills entirely this portion of block until southwest, where covers the roof of the new residential and commercial structure. This system becomes the starting point of the Tang cultural axis, aimed to link the Ming city with the project area, extricating itself in the very dense urban fabric already consolidated in the north, without the need of large demolition or a “tabula rasa”, but working in an interstitial way.

A TWOFOLD CITY-BUILDING: HERITAGE CENTER In the eastern part, the Heritage Center is intended as a double facade “city-building”, functional in order to define the limits of the Pagoda and to provide relations with the fragmentation of the urban fabric made of objects, typical of generic modern Chinese city, incorporating it into public spaces and services. Entirely longitudinally carved by an inner urban street, it is a real public space, open twenty-four hours a day and able to connects the whole eastern part of the design. In this path the empty space becomes the real architectonical theme, and once again its shape is the result of the subtraction of matter from the initial volume. The result of these buildings is a second enclosure able to protect the Pagoda’s one, while the area of respect that has been maintained between the two, acts as a “buffer zone”. In this green area the vegetation acts as protagonist; from here the visitors can access the facilities placed on the sides of the two linear buildings or enjoy the view of Pagoda.

BIM - BORCA IN MOTION
REACTIVATION OF ENI COLONY IN BORCA DI CADORE Prof.ssa Stefania Varvaro, Prof.ssa Rossana Gabaglio
Edoardo Gellner is one of the most important and less known Italian architects of the twentieth century. During this project we tried to compare ourselves with the most important project he realized by the will of Enrico Mattei, an essential character in order to understand the project of Villaggio Eni in Borca di Cadore and more generally Italy in late 1950s. The intervention focused on the Colony, originally used for ENI employees’ children, it was abandoned in the 80s of the twentieth century. The project therefore started from an in-depth study of the context and of Cadore environment in order to identify new functional hypotheses that could once again make the Colony a point of exception and attraction in the valley. Its strategic position within Dolomites alpine arch, and the will to make the colony an attractive centre for several users at different hours of and the year, guided the choice towards the design of a new headquarter for CeRiSM “Sports, Mountain and Health Center”. It included hostel for tourists and sportsmen and accom-
modations for sport teams and patients. Numerous spaces have been conceived for the practice of different sports, recreational facilities and physical therapy. The external space has been considered as part and extension of the internal one, giving the possibility to the users to remove the partitions between them and relating the buildings with the surrounding wood. A delicate theme was how to relate to this important architectures that however needed to be reconsidered from a spatial and functional point of view, in fact the buildings often had very low internal height and spaces thought for children dimension. It has been decided to maintain the circulation system, the main carachter that characterizes the entire Colony, and to operate in the other spaces with new volumes and units integrated in the original buildings but distinguishable from them thanks materials and their position, often between interior and exterior.

INHABITING STONE
LIGHTHOUSE SEA LANDSCAPE HOTEL
Siracusa represents an extraordinary system of natural and historical beauties, in a constant relation beetween sea and land. The density of artistic heritage in the city center is worldwide known, but the city territory offers a greater possibility of touristic spots. The main objective of the project is the creation of a unique system of these naturalistic and cultural potentiality in which Murro di Porco lighthouse can develop its role as landmark in the southern area of the city. In the centuries architects, artists and common travellers have been fascinated by Siracusa and his architecture. Of any age we’re talking about, the common aspect in the city architecture is the stone. The theme of the projects starts from a deep study of this ancient archetypes, like latomias and catacombs. The term Latomia derives from latin “latomiae”, which derives from greek latomíai (composed by lâs, stone, and tomíai, to cut). Both of them are the demonstration of an ancient action at the base of architecture:

the subtraction of matter for the creation of an habitable space. The landscape hotel is located in a rocky area from which it grows up, taking as a reference these extraordinary examples of ancient architecture. The building aims to be stereotomic and archaic in its composition process, facing the needs of a contemporary intervention. The result is a complex structure of internal and external spaces made up of rooms and courts constantly linked to the wider context in which they are situated. The linghthouse, set in a new function system, can develop both its visual and functional role, as landmark and exhibition centre. This organism is arranged as a sort of hostel where people could live in an essential way in the shadows of architecture and surrounded by nature. The rooms, again, are conceived as basic shelters with poetical view on the landscape related with the local tradition by the use of the whitw siracusan stone and the dark lava stone.

Starting from this consideration, this organism is arranged as a sort of hostel where people could live in an essential way in the shadows of architecture and surrounded by nature. The intervention designed on this purpose researches a direct dialogue with nature and history of this part of Sicily. An architecture made of stone is the way to link the project to these aspects. The landscape hotel is located in a rocky area from which it grows up, taking as a reference the extraordinary architecture excavated in the stone of Siracusa, like latomias and catacombs. SPOT PILLS FOR SPREAD ISSUES
The competition promoted by Politecnico di Milano was about to rethink a way of living campus Leonardo through the themes of habitability and sustainability, thanks to projects designed for a specific area or that could be moved inside the whole campus. As students of Architecture our disappointment referred to the bad condition of the common space available in the campus, in particular in the “A” building. Altough space exists, its lack of adequate furniture often implies a wrong use of it: maquettes are abandoned on the floor in every corner, announcements are posted on every wall, people study literally everywhere. Our project consists of three elements that create a strong dialogue with an important character recurrent all over the “A” building: the tubular parapet designed by Vittoriano Viganò. These elements are indeed easily hung on it and are placeable wherever the parapet occurs. The choice of materials is guided by the need to have a strong and permeable to view structure together with the desire to have a
human-friendly perception of the objects. As a result we opted for a metal square frame supporting a plywood curved plain. The joint between the two elements and the minio red colour of the tubular recalls some details by Viganò in the same building. The bacheca is thought to be used both as a vertical support for announcements, plates and timetables and as an horizontal support for small models during an exposition or simply for a cup of coffee during a break. The desk is a single location useful to study, work on the pc and make little maquettes. It is composed by a unique plain which creates a pocket that can host material and various objects. The storage is the ideal place to leave maquettes, materials and plates without having fear of someone treading them. It consists of three shelves designed to host maquettes of different dimensions.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE ROMAN BRIDGE DIGGING INTO PARMA’S HISTORICAL PAST
Prof.ssa Stefania Varvaro, Prof.ssa Rossana Gabaglio
The starting points are the findings of an Roman bridge in the city of Parma. They are located beneath the present Ponte di Mezzo, nowadays standing in a forsaken and degraded space. Our intervention, in his limited action, is part of a broader logic of the revival of Piazza Ghiaia as market area and the beating heart of a social life at once popular and cultured within the historical city. The project also suggests the redevelopment of Via Romagnosi until the church of San Quirino, with the aim to make it work together with the new spaces designed in the underpass of the Roman bridge.
ones that do not find space in the nearby Pilot Museum. The barycentre position with respect to the Campus of the historical center, in line with the MASTERCAMPUS project, makes this “crossroads” of the Via Emilia at the epicenter ideal for a student hub, a meeting point Erasmus, rather than a site for student associations facing all the sides of the city center in different points and way. The project also provides a system of ramps and outdoor rooms along via Romagnosi linking together its original level (today the street is connected at Ponte di Mezzo) to the one of Piazza Ghiaia.
Our proposal starts from the bridge itself, considered as the living heart of the project: both the hub and the museum have a strict relationship with it, that it’s a strong presence even for people just passing through the site. A system of floating footpaths at the base of the bridge, above the water level, allows people to reach a new museal space, designed in order to host both big artifacts and small

MICRO STRATEGIES PORTUGAL A GUEST HOUSE FOR CASA EM AZEITAO Prof. Marco Borsotti
The project for a small guest house for this example of Portoguese residential house started from its deep study. Architect Miguel Beleza, operating at Atelier Central (Lisbon, Portugal), has designed a concrete house for Quinta dos Foios, in AzeitĂŁo (Lisbon, Portugal). Apparently opaque, the house is yet ruled by a strong, unexpected interior/exterior contrast. The very first concern is simple and natural: a house that looks like a house. Its form was to be basic as the material, concrete. By analogy, emulation and filtration, the elements emerge: roof, windows, chimney, porch, balcony, railings. The house occupies all the available area, as the triangular shape of the lot allowed for the free demarcation of its boundaries, accentuating its separation from the nearest surroundings. Its monolithic volume of apparent concrete is punctuated by openings that appear as a result of interior rigor. Even the project of the small guest house had to deal with the irregular shape of the lot. It has been decided to place it in the wider

part of it, reiterating the express desire in the mother house not to occupy the south area. Referring to the volumetric simplicity of the study case, the house theme was about to work with the solids and voids of the facade, for this reason the loggia of the mother house becomes a strong element in the guest house, an extruded volume with the same proportions but opposite to the loggia spatiality, in order to create a close relationship between the secondary floors of the buildings. The vertical distribution is organized by a longitudinal stair that defines a strong blind concrete wall that, similarly to the mother house one, is opposite to a fully openable glass facade. This solution has been thought in order to give light to the spaces on the ground floor and possibly to extend the surface of the small guest house opening all its big windows under the cantilevered parallelepiped. The closing system in corten slabs propose again the case study one, whose simple and honest materials are also taken up.
