Academic works 1997-2005

House of the Ephebe Object: Design of an house for the ephebe. Project: Daniele Pezzi Site: Mozia island, Sicily, Italy Date: 1997-1998 Teacher: Giovanni Fraziano This project consists of designing a “house for the ephebe. The sculpture of the Ephebe of Mozia is the most important archeological finding on the island. The idea is to create a space for the ephebe, meant as the young boy in transition to adultness. This leads to the de-construction of the Roman villa as an addiction of rooms. The bedroom, study room, kitchen, bathroom have been studied separately as archetypes. Each room has its own function and volume and is distincted from the others. The 4 small buildings are connected by an underground corridor starting with a staircase and it ends with an hidden room; this is the meditation room where the ideal ephebe can develop his personality.

Museum of the future Object: Design of a Museum of art for the future. An art collection made up of statistics. Project: Daniele Pezzi Site: Piazza degi Eremitani, Padova, Italy Date: 1998-1999 Teacher: Franca Pittaluga The location is a small lot close to a church, a museum and the park of the notorious Cappella degli Scrovegni (Giotto’s frescos). Such historical context has led to the choice of a cement box open on the front road side. The external wall surfaces are covered in hot-worked metal waste. The building consists of a 15 meters high room. The space is populated by many hanging egg-shaped structures connected to a series of passageways and ladders. The “eggs” are soundproof and contain virtualreality stations from where it is possible to admire the collection of works. Sculptures, paintings, videos and performances are set in a background which the artist designed from a plastic, lighting and dimensional point of view; this solves any adaptation problem between the art-works and their context. Offices, the conference room, the cafeteria and toilets are all in the back part of the museum. They are accessible from a 5-meter high panoramic terrace, which directs the public to the suspended pathways.

Moda Center Object: Re-planning of a large fashion outlet by the side of a fast-flowing road. Project: Daniele Pezzi Site: S.S. Terraglio, Montebelluna (TV), Italy Date: 1999-2000 Teacher: Alberto Cecchetto The project consists in re-planning an existing fashion warehouse keeping the old pillar structure as the only fixed element. This request has been taken as a challenge to re-invent the typology of the shopping center. The street with shops (typically in the center of an Italian city) is the experience that has been simulated here. The customer’s circulation diagram is folding and turning creating the architecture volumes. The lot is by the side of a heavy traffic road connecting Venice to Treviso. Considering a vehicle in movement as a vector and the driver as a spectator of an accelerated vision in space, the building seems to emerge or lower to the ground. The internal walking path is passing through the street façade. Looking from the outside customers turn into actors or models on a fashion show, walking up and down on an advertising background which changes according to the season and new trends. The Moda Center is located in the countryside; thanks to this location it was possible to have windows which let the outside interacting with the inside activities. This led to design the exterior landscape which is split between the parking lot and the playground; a safe and relaxing environment for children while parents are shopping.

Library and Cultural Center Object: Design of Library and urban redevelopment. Project: Daniele Pezzi Site: Fermignano, (PU), Italy Date: 2000-2001 Teacher: Renato Bocchi The goal of the project is the urban redevelopment of a marginal and narrow area (between the river Metauro and the hillside) of Fermignano, a small town close to Urbino. The site is next to the main square, but still periferic with its few unused sheds and grain bins. The building of a cultural center here will revive the neighbourhood and also connect the riverside to the city center. A large park is designed on the roof. An artificial landscape folding in all directions to connect the road (10 meters high) to the bank level. The layout is based on a combination of three flows. The reading rooms, conference room and children spaces are facing the water with continuous windows on two levels. The main foyer and the cinema embrace the new square under the bridge. All those programs are connected by a passageway. A fluid following the undulating outlines of the Metauro. It rises from the ground to reach the first level and then splits in different directions to connect the cinema, the underground parking, or the river side.

Via Torino urban development Object: Conversion of a mixed program area into a business district Project: Daniele Pezzi, Giulio D’Agosto, Mariano Fuzzi Site: Mestre, (VE), Italy Date: 2001-2002 Teacher: Bernardo Secchi The design of a new layer floating ten meters high from the ground. An architectural fluid using the roofs of the exististing warehouses, connects all the buildings in the area. This intervention occupies mainly the south part of the precinct and is characterized by the coming together of different (and opposite) uses. Via Torino becomes the hinge between the north part, already occupied by prestigious offices, and an area which is completely transformed by the project. The ten-meter-high park is reserved to pedestrians and it houses a number of leasure programs such as a skate park, some sport fields and a new marina; thus makes it easier and safer to move around 24 hours a day.

Tourist Lounge Object: Renovation of Venice ’s train station Project: Daniele Pezzi, Giulio D’Agosto, Mariano Fuzzi Site: Venezia, Italy Date: 2003 Teacher: GianUgo Polesello Design of a floating structure upon Venice railway station area housing modern programs ( such as the tourist office, a contemporary art gallery, an auditorium, a cinema, a cheap hotel, bars and restaurants) that are impossible to include in historical buildings due to structural limitations. The tourist lounge stimulates the desire for discovery: a dynamic labyrinth in which tourists can simply wander around and enjoy the play of light, prospective and surprising views, offered by this unique city.

East Ravenna - linear park Object: Developing of a strategy of coexistence between industrial and natural areas in Ravenna’s harbour Degree Project: Daniele Pezzi Site: Ravenna, Italy Date: 2005 Teacher: Stefano Boeri The east part of Ravenna is an environment weighed down by chemical plants. The harbour is located inbetween the city and the sea side and it is a disturbing vision for people travelling for tourism and leisure and also it is a barrier which prevents the unity of the Po Delta Natural Park. The project consists in creating a pine forest (planting the same amount of trees cut down to make room for the factories in the 60’s) which extends from the historical center to the coast, using all the empty lots along the road and railway routes. The pattern of the park has been produced by a digital alteration of the satellite photograph of the territory. This Diagram is modified with the insertion of walking and bicycle tracks and the glades in the woods. Those open spaces are the “active” parts of the park. They include car parks, areas for sport equipment, different types of vegetation, rest areas, cultivations and services. The need of a scientific monitoring of the pollution levels in water and air led to the design of a landscape building located on an artificial island at the intersection between the harbour canal and the marshlands of the natural park. This new building will house the research facilities as well as a museum joining together the scientific and touristic activities and avoiding a complete north to south permeability of the Delta. The design involves the creation of three overlapped layers. The programs are covered in a roof that slopes gradually towards the water. This grass covered folding surface is accesible for pedestrians who can walk under the high foliage of the pine trees planted all around.

Professional works 2005-2011

Countryhouse in Langhe region Object: Trasformation of an old countryhouse in to a big manor Duties: Layout design, Pool design, Cad and 3D drawings Site: Dogliani, (CU), Italy Date: 2006-2007 Office:Studio Paolo Agliardi A big countryhouse (2000 square meters) located on a hill top in the beautiful Langhe region in Piemonte has been trasformed in to a big manor for the manager of one of the most important italian companies. The external walls of the original building have been kept untouched. The internal layout has been designed to house 14 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms, a large kitchen with cellar and refrigeration room, a cinema, 4 livingrooms, a big diningroom, and facilities for the servants. The hill has been excavated to create a new swimming pool with locker rooms and a bar.

Fraser Yachts - San Diego headquarters Object: Interior Design Duties: Layout design, Interior design, Cad and 3D drawings Site: San Diego, California, U.S.A. Date: 2006-2007 Office:Studio Paolo Agliardi Interior design of a two-storey building on the Wharf of the 2007 American Cup in San Diego.

Dolce Vita IceCream shop Object: Corporate design and interior design of the prototype of an ice-cream shop Duties: Layout design, Interior design, Corporate design Site: Guangzhou, China Date: 2007-2008 Office: Studio74-ASIA Project for a chain of ice-cream shops to be built in China for an Italian client. The style of 19th century Italian cafeterias has been updated with the choice of soft shapes and pastel colors that can ease the gravity of the environment and adapt to the characteristics of ice-cream. The refrigerated counter is located on a side of the large room, while most of its space is occupied by an alternation of coffee tables and lounges. The ceiling is hidden by a series of parallel wooden staves curved on the end; the main overhead lighting is coming from the fissures between those elements.

Antonio Ricci Foundation Object: Design of an exhibiton center Duties: Layout design, Building design Site: Inland China Date: 2007-2008 Office: Studio74-ASIA Project of a multi-functional building sponsored by the Antonio Ricci Foundation, to be built in several university campuses in China. The client requests an Italian style for spaces dedicated to study and exhibitions, in memory of the influence Antonio Ricci had on Chinese culture. The starting point is the Italian “fontego archetype, characterized by an empty ground floor conceived as a meeting place. This model is modified by a glass cage hidden between two series of pillars, connected to the upper level with a monumental staircase freckled with squared stone blocks serving as support for students who want to study or simply to write a letter. The first floor houses three large flexible rooms, that can be converted to form a single space.

Canto Motto retail design Object: Retail design Duties: Layout design, Interior design Site: Inland China Date: 2007-2008 Office: Studio74-ASIA Design of Canto Motto stores, an Italian-Chinese fashion company. The client asked for a minimal and elegant black and white style. The shop window is populated by mannequins that are outlined on a black background. A fretworked pattern (similar to a lace) gives a glimpse of the interior where customers are looking around. By an architectural point of view the store window is designed as a composition of three dimensional boxes, open to the outside and functional on the inside, where according to different needs it houses a fitting room, a small storage or the counter.

Italian Pavillion, SHANGAI EXPO 2010 Object: Competition project for the Italian Pavillion at the SHANGAI EXPO Duties: Layout design, Building design. Site: Shangai, China Date: 2008 Office: Studio74-ASIA The Better City - Better Life theme for the EXPO is represented trough the main features of Italian urban quality. The historical stratification typical of the Italian city is reproduced in the project by an omogenous combination of volumes with different heights. A coherent whole divided in two by a large monumental staircase that leads to a suspended terrace facing the river and the old Shangai. This scenography is enclosed by two vertical gardens where various kind of plants will grow during the exhibition. The main entrance and foyer is located under the portico on the riverside. The tallest building houses the main exhibition space; a flexible large room is enlighted by the skylights. The other programs include a conference room, a restaurant and a bar. The external walls are covered is green slate tiles and stone plaques engraved with famous Italian streets and squares.
