Questo portfolio presenta alcuni dei lavori che ho svolto, ma più in particolare, racconta di grammatiche di spazi trasversali. Ho selezionato quattro luoghi della città, quattro ambiti completamente diversi nei quali mi sono trovato ad operare: un complesso di edilizia residenziale pubblica, una scuola, un quartiere e un lotto in disuso. Assieme a questi luoghi e le loro grammatiche presento un modo di operare che mostra due livelli di fare architettura, uno più tecnico e uno più sperimentale. Per ognuno di questi luoghi urbani provo a spiegare entrambi i metodi e presento due diversi progetti.
The following portfolio shows some of the projects I have done, and more especially it tells about grammars of transversal spaces. I selected four places of the city, four different fields in which I have acted; a complex of residential public housing, a school, a neighbourhood and a derelict plot of land. Together with these spaces and their grammars, I present a method of working that displays two ways of doing architecture; a more technical one and one more experimental. On each of these urban spaces I explain both methods by showing two different projects.

L’Alloggio Assistito The Assisted Housing Completed at: Gorizia, Italy Year: 2016
Proposta di un nuovo edificio di edilizia residenziale commissionato da ATER Gorizia in collaborazione con l’Università degli Studi di Trieste. Il progetto consiste di un edificio a cinque piani suddiviso in tre blocchi con diverse tipologie abitative, 50 unità in tutto e un garage di pertinenza. Trovandosi a ridosso della ferrovia, risultava necessario preservare una distanza di 10 metri tra il confine del lotto e le opere murarie. L’idea generatrice di tutto il progetto era di giocare con il contrasto tra pieni e vuoti per favorire una tipologia spaziale diversificata che creasse elementi e spazi in comune tra gli inquilini, come per esempio balconi, passerelle e terrazze. Al piano terra, una serie di tre filamenti fuoriescono dal blocco principale, così da aumentarne il fattore illuminante. Il primo piano è costituito di un blocco ‘speciale’ caratterizzato da un quarto filamento estruso sostenuto da pilastri a sezione rotonda. I rimanenti tre piani sono costituiti da alloggi con accesso dai ballatoi.
Proposal of a new complex intended for assisted living that has been commissioned by ATER Gorizia in collaboration with Università degli Studi of Trieste. The project consists of a five storey building partitioned on three blocks with multiple living typologies for a total of 50 units and a garage fo relevance. The generating idea of the whole project was to play around the contrast between fullness and emptiness with a view to facilitate a diversified spatial typology that would create spaces for the community of inhabitants - such as balconies, boardwalk and terraces. In order to increase the illuminating factor, a series of three filaments stick out from the main block. The first floor is shaped into a ‘special block’ characterised by a forth extruded filament that is hold up by round-section pillars. The remaining three floors are designed into dwellings with access from balconies.
Esplorando la Vita di Comunità Exploring the Common Living Completed at: Oberhausen, Germany With: REFUNC and Kitev and Inside Year: 2018
Questo progetto fu realizzato nella città di Oberhausen, centro pulsante della Germania produttiva che attira migliaia di persone in cerca di lavoro tra i quali molti sono rifugiati e migranti. L’associazione Kitev (Kultur im Turm eV) lavora da anni per cercare di costruire occasioni di condivisione e integrazioni per lo sviluppo di un’identità condivisa tra i cittadini di Oberhausen, soprattutto con gli emarginati e gli esclusi.
This project was realised in the city of Oberhausen, beating heart of productive Germany, which attracts thousands of job seeker, among which many are refugees and immigrants. The association Kitev, (Kultur im Turm eV) has been working for years on building opportunities for sharing and for the unfolding a shared identity among the citizens of Oberhausen, especially with the marginalised and excluded people.
Il luogo nel quale abbiamo operato è un complesso in cui gli appartamenti sono abitati principalmente da diversi gruppi di migranti e rifugiati. Assieme a loro si è deciso di concentrarsi sull’ingresso dell’edificio che risultava essere fatiscente e trascurato. Inoltre vista la voglia di auto collaborazione all’interno del palazzo, abbiamo realizzato una bacheca dove ogni condomino poteva chiedere e fornire materiali o condividere le proprie conoscenze e abilità. Gli interventi sono stati realizzato con materiali trovati in loco, come vecchie riviste pubblicitarie e camere d’aria di biciclette usate.
The place we have acted upon is a complex in which the apartments are mainly inhabited by different social groups of migrants and refugees. Together with them we have decided to focus on the entrance of the building, which was dilapidated and neglected. Furthermore, given the desire for self-cooperation inside the building, we realised a notice board where each inhabitant could have asked and given materials or could shared their knowledge and skills. The interventions have been made with materials found on site, such as old advertising magazines and inner tubes of used bicycles.

Negli ultimi anni la città di Gorizia ha ampliato l’offerta educativa potenziando il settore universitario di nuove facoltà. Numerosi complessi in disuso sono stati ristrutturati e adibiti a nuove sedi di facoltà . Esse tuttavia sorgono dislocate qui e là nella città e risultano scollegate tra loro. Piazza dello Studente è un punto di riferimento per le relazioni tra le facoltà nonché luogo di aggregazione cittadina. Si configura come un nuovo polo multidisciplinare per dare spazio e strutture agli studenti di tutte le provenienze e indirizzi. Inspirandosi ad una locale conformazione topografica, la nuova piazza si interra naturalmente nel parco cittadino. Una serie di terrazzamenti e percorsi alternativi conducono al centro della piazza sulla quale si affacciano tre blocchi polifunzionali; una sala prove, una sala conferenze ed un ristorante. Solo la biblioteca pubblica è stata posizionata superficialmente e diventa così l’entrata principale di tutto il complesso.
In recent years, the city of Gorizia has expanded the educational offer by strengthening the university sector of new faculties. Numerous disused complexes have been renovated and converted into new faculties. However, they are dislocated here and there in the city and they result to be disconnected from each other. Student’s Square stands as a landmark for the relations between faculties as well as a place of social aggregation of the city. It is configured as a new multidisciplinary centre that could give space and facilities to students from all backgrounds and courses. Inspired by a local topographical structure, the new square is naturally buried into the city park. A series of terraces and alternative routes lead to the centre of the square, which is overlooked by three multifunctional blocks; a rehearsal room, a conference room and a restaurant. Only the public library has been placed superficially and thus becomes the main entrance of the whole complex.

La cucina di oggi è un posto brutto, sono i centri di produzione di rifiuti della casa e dell’istituzione moderna. La Brutta Cucina è un progetto di ricerca sulla produzione di rifiuti nella mensa della KABK - Royal Academy of Art, L’aia. Questa mensa rappresenta il primo esempio di sistema di spreco che è sostenibile solo in termini economici. Come sarebbe una mensa senza sprechi? È possibile? ‘The Ugly Kitchen’ esplora i risultati del progetto di una mensa che chiude il cerchio degli sprechi e si concentra sui benefici sociali ed educativi della coltivazione e della cottura del cibo. Come mezzo per educare, il flusso nella mensa segue principalmente il percorso del cibo. Si entra attraverso il giardino esterno che circonda la cucina e gli spazi per mangiare.
Today’s kitchen is an ugly place, they are the waste production centres of the modern home and institution. ‘The Ugly Kitchen’ is a research based project on the waste production of the canteen at the KABK - Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. This canteen is a prime example of a wasteful system that is sustainable only in economical terms. What would a waste-free canteen look like? Is it possible? ‘The Ugly Kitchen’ explores the outcome of a canteen design that closes the loop on waste and focuses on the social and educational benefits of growing and cooking food. As a means to educate, the flow into the canteen primarily follows the journey of the food. You enter through the external garden that surrounds the kitchen and eating spaces.

Trieste è una città con una significativa presenza di elementi naturali e di aree verdi. L’obiettivo del workshop era quello di raccogliere idee e proposte per creare una nuova identità per la città pubblica, quella dei complessi di case popolari all’interno della struttura urbana. La nostra proposta è stata quella di consolidare percorsi secondari lenti che attraversassero la città in verticale e collegassero la città pubblica con la natura verde circostante. La sfida di evitare i comuni percorsi più veloci ci ha dato l’opportunità di inglobare nella nuova struttura luoghi ed edifici abbandonati che appartenevano alla nostra memoria e che avrebbero potuto essere riutilizzati e ricollegati al tessuto urbano. Abbiamo definito una strategia fondata su cinque principi: aprire, aggiungere, rimuovere, caratterizzare e connettere.
Trieste is a city with a significant presence of natural elements and green areas. The aim of the workshop was to gather ideas and proposals to create a new identity for the public city (città pubblica), the one of social housings complexes within the urban structure. Our proposal was to consolidate secondary slow routes that would cross the city vertically and, indeed, connect the public city with the green natural surroundings. The challenge of avoiding the fastest common routes gave us the opportunity to incorporate into the new structure abandoned places and buildings that belonged to our memory and that could have been reused and reconnected to the urban texture. We defined a strategy based of five principles; open, add, remove, typify and connect.

Pianificazioni a lungo termine e mega costruzioni sono i protagonisti indiscussi di questi processi di rigenerazione. Mentre l’architettura e i suoi esperti sono chiamati a fornire soluzioni tecniche e formali, resta come necessità fondamentale di questa disciplina non dimenticare che le forme sono abitate dalla vita. In questo progetto, l’architettura è vista come un modo di leggere tra le linee delle trame complesse delle città. All’interno della riqualificazione dell’area industriale di Binckhorst, nella città dell’Aia, ho dato vita al Laboratorio 309, uno spazio multidisciplinare per l’analisi del contesto antropologico dell’area. Lo scopo era quello di agire con sensibilità nello spazio di una rigenerazione in corso, di seguire la vita oltre la forma, nei suoi molteplici strati, e di rimanere aperti all’imprevisto. Immaginate che una covata di galline selvatiche diventi il fattore scatenante del dibattito pubblico?
Long-term masterplan and mega-construction are the undisputed protagonists of these regeneration processes. While architecture and its experts are expected to provide technical and formal solutions, it remains as a fundamental necessity of this discipline not to forget that forms are inhabited by lives. In this project, architecture is seen as a way of reading between the lines of cities’ complex textures. Within the regeneration of Binckhorst industrial area, in the city of The Hague, I initiated Laboratory 309, a multidisciplinary space for the analysis of the site’s anthropological context. The purpose was to act sensitively in the in-between space of a regeneration in progress, to follow life beyond form, in its multiple layers, and to stay open for the unexpected. Would you imagine a brood of wild chickens becoming the trigger for public discussion?

Praia Mare è un piccolo comune della provincia di Cosenza a forte concentrazione turistica soprattutto nei mesi estivi. Questo fenomeno ha portato uno intenso sviluppo di strutture ricettive alberghiere in prevalenza localizzati sulla costa.
Praia Mare is a small town in the province of Cosenza with a large concentration of tourists especially over the summer months. This phenomenon has led to an intense development of hotel accommodation facilities mainly located on the coast.
Questo progetto consiste di un centro benessere e bar-ristorante con lo scopo di dare una nuova funzione agli spazi esterni afferenti l’area del parcheggio seminterrato affacciati sul lungomare. Tre nuovi blocchi si posizionano sul parcheggio preesistente e un quarto direttamente sul fronte ispirato alla limitrofa isola di Dino. Una sistema di frangisole protegge quasi completamente i diversi blocchi ad eccezione del solarium e della zona piscine. Il ristorante, cuore del progetto, è stato disegnato in modo che si proiettasse verso la spiaggia così da diventare collegamento con il lungomare.
This project consists of a wellness complex and a barrestaurant with the aim of giving a new function to the outdoor spaces pertaining to the basement parking area on the seafront. Three new blocks are placed on the pre-existing car park and a fourth one directly on the front inspired by the neighbouring island of Dino. A system of brisesoleil protects almost completely the different blocks with the exception of the solarium and the swimming pool area. The restaurant, the heart of the project, has been designed so that it projects itself towards the beach so as to become a link with the promenade.

Nel 2012 a Berlino un referendum ha sancito che l’ex aeroporto cittadino Tempelhof sarebbe rimasto parco cittadino per i prossimi 20 anni. Questo incredibile atto sociale ha di fatto congelato le sorti del suddetto luogo contro speculazione e gentrificazione. Nel limitrofo bacino di ritenzione idrica raumlaborberlin ha dato vita a Floating University; un laboratorio cittadino in cui numerosi politici, esperti, architetti e studenti si sono ritrovati per discutere sul futuro del Tempelhof e più in generale delle nostre città. Nell’ambito di questo simposio durato diversi mesi, ho realizzato un laboratorio pubblico di analisi del tessuto cittadino e nelle sue multiculturalità con particolare attenzione al ruolo che il passaporto ha nella nostra società.
In 2012, a referendum in Berlin stated that the former Tempelhof city airport would remain a public park for the coming 20 years. This incredible social act has effectively frozen the fate of this place against speculation and gentrification. In the nearby water retention basin raumlaborberlin gave birth to Floating University; a city laboratory where many politicians, experts, architects and students gathered to discuss the future of Tempelhof and more generally of our cities. As part of this symposium which lasted several months, I created a public laboratory for the analysis of the city’s fabric and its multicultural aspects with a particular attention to the role that the passport has in our society.
