CEDAR HILL MUTTONTOWN, NEW YORK

Cedar Hill is introduced by distinguished wrought iron gates flanked by handsome brick piers with lights. The automatic gates open to a drive with a lovely promenade of Linden trees that sets the stage for arrival to the spectacular nine-bedroom residence. Poised on 8.17 richly landscaped acres with long views of verdant lawns and gardens, the quintessential Georgian-style residence is a symphony of symmetry and balanced proportion. Topped with a new slate roof that is punctuated with dormers, the stately red brick façade features decorative cornice moldings with dentils, pilasters with fluted capitals and original six-oversix sash windows that have been meticulously restored and dressed with painted black shutters. The residence was designed by the architect James W. O’Connor, and it was completed in 1916 for Charles Henschel Thieriot, a Trustee of both the New York Racing Association and The National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga, NY and a renowned collector of racing, fox hunting, and coaching art. The timeless residence has been updated with the addition of a wing that is a perfect complement. Interpreted by Jim Smiros, of Smiros & Smiros architects, the addition includes columns and a balustrade, three arched-top garage bays adorned with a flowering vine covered trellis, second story windows topped with pediments, and an attractive eight-sided cupola that crowns the slate roof.

Beautiful French entry doors with glass lights open to a vestibule with an original mirror on one side and a silver leaf niche on the other. The inviting, well-appointed foyer and adjoining gallery hall feature a polished Imperial White and Verde Alpi marble floor set in a splendid checkerboard pattern. Intricate original moldings and sparkling crystal chandeliers add refinement, and French doors at the far end of the foyer provide views of the expansive flagstone terrace and centerpiece statuary fountain in the formal garden. Principal rooms flow easily from one to the next. The library is wrapped in wood paneling with a rich patina. The fireplace has a Verde Alpi marble surround. An intimate and well-equipped bar room is tucked into the hall on the way to the grand formal living room. With views of both the front and back gardens and access to the flagstone terrace, this elegant room is tailored with refined period moldings, crystal chandeliers and an intricate fruit and vine ceiling detail that glows with reflected light from its 24-karat gold gilt. A substantial carved marble fireplace anchors the room. The spacious living room opens to a sublime sunroom with a limestone radiant heated floor. A wall of frameless floor-to-ceiling custom glass with two sets of doors on the southern facing exposure offers unobstructed views of crisp white columns and the sparkling azure blue swimming pool surrounded by a carpet of grass and a periphery of hydrangea that bloom throughout the summer. Two majestic copper beech trees stand sentinel beyond the pool garden. A retractable striped awning softens the natural light. Ornate wrought iron screens with animal details embellish the original leaded glass French doors and windows on the east and west facing walls. They are a wonderful counterpoint to the clean look of the frameless glass. The generously-sized formal dining room features lustrous oak boiserie with fluted pilasters, wainscoting and paneled doors. A fireplace adds warm ambiance to the well-dressed room. Arched wood paneled doors open to an intimate breakfast room where a sprinkling of brass stars is inlaid into the granite floor.

The state-of-the-art kitchen glows with hand crafted alder wood glass-front custom cabinets, paneled walls, walnut floors and a wood coffered ceiling. There is a large granite-topped prep island with seating. Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers are integrated into the well-planned design. A Gaggenau steamer and an oversized Wolf range with ovens can accommodate large scale entertaining. A separate pantry has room for plentiful supplies. Adjacent to the kitchen, a den has built-in desks and cabinetry. There is an office with a large bay window, and an enclosed breezeway hall with a limestone floor opens to a covered porch and the front courtyard. The hallway leads to the stacked radiant heated garage with three bays on the first level and two garages on the lower level.

A staircase climbs to arrive at an impressive great room. Approximately 23-feet wide by 44-feet long, the room’s Louisiana pine trussed vaulted ceiling soars to 16-feet high, and it opens to a cupola. A massive stone fireplace with a raised hearth rises to meet the apex of the ceiling. Pine paneling complements custom creamcolored built-in cabinetry with a subtle glaze. There is ample room for several furniture groupings and access to a terrace balcony.

The main staircase features original moldings with an attractive Greek key motif. It opens to the principal wing which is truly a luxurious retreat. A serene sitting room overlooks the front courtyard. There is a convenient coffee and beverage bar with two refrigerator drawers and a hammered nickel sink. Original to the suite’s design, a charming dressing room has closets that line the walls and an integrated vanity. A second dressing room is furnished with custom fittings and wood cabinetry. The sumptuous primary suite has a fireplace with an attractive carved marble surround. Beautiful onyx radiant heated floors and onyx wainscoting grace the en suite bath. There is a deep air spa tub, an onyx shower and a sauna.

An additional six bedrooms with en suite baths are on this level. One of the bedrooms is accessible, and it is adjacent to the elevator which travels to all but the third level of the residence. Another of the bedrooms is currently styled as a playroom with built-in cabinetry and a window seat. An office features a pretty bamboo floor and a vaulted ceiling. It has French doors that open to a teak balcony terrace with a gently curved wrought iron railing and panoramic views of the formal gardens with pachysandra, ilex, wisteria and roses. The third level arrives at a hall with built-in storage cabinetry. It leads to two comfortable bedrooms that share a bath. Two large cedar closets and spacious storage areas complete this level. The finished lower level has a pool/massage room with a SwimEx fitness spa pool surrounded by teak flooring. A wall of glass sets off a bright and open fitness room with a large bow window. A terra cotta tiled hall leads to a potting room with a dog spa and full doors that open to the gardens. There is a prep kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. A well-equipped laundry room has storage cabinetry, and a temperature-controlled wine room with a red brick barrel ceiling has storage for 500+ bottles. There is access to two garages, mechanical rooms and storage rooms that complete this level. For comfort, there are air filtration and dehumidification systems as well as a generator. There is an audio system both indoors and outdoors. The property is completely fenced, and there is a security system. Landscape lighting highlights the residence and lush gardens at night.

The property boasts many amenities that include a Har-Tru tennis court with lighting for evening play, a brick terrace with a picturesque gazebo, a sparkling heated swimming pool with a bluestone surround and patio, a golfer’s putting and chipping green, a wonderful play area with a large cedar climber/swing set, a playhouse and a tree house. An expansive flagstone terrace that is perfect for al fresco dining, relaxing and entertaining overlooks a resplendent formal sunken garden. Under the stewardship of its current owner, Cedar Hill has been impeccably restored and expanded to perfection. It seamlessly blends today’s finest luxurious amenities with gracious period details. Set on 8.17-acres of open lawns, majestic specimen trees and immaculately groomed flowering gardens, this estate is a preeminent property of distinction.
