IMMERSIVE ART ISLAND ICONIC LANDSCAPE MILL ROCK, NY CRITIC: DRAGANA ZORIC In the continued search for what it means to be architecturally iconic and how the term operates in a landscape condition, systems from brutalist architecture is applied to the design of a newly constructed “island” - or a landscape - on the East River as a redifinition of public space and to renegotiate people’s relationship with the river and the landscape of the city.

Mill Rock, an island on the East River situated within the confines of the Upper East Side, Queens and Randall’s Island has been left untouched by man and isolated with minimal transportation routes, is uninhabited and remains fully covered with trees and greenery. The island, enveloped by the perpetual activity and noise from the surrounding city endures a detachment and decontextualized quality due to its uninhibitedness, and renders it anomalous from its other island counterparts, such as Liberty, Ellis and Roosevelt Islands, that all have something that they’re known for - an icon - while Mill Rock’s iconography has yet to be idealized. As a result of Mill Rock’s isolation, this allows the opportunity to create a respite and a place to escape for New Yorkers to run away to. The program is an immersive art island that gives them a different experience interacting with art as they do in the city, that acts more like a time-based contained experience that doesn’t necessarily take over factors, such as architecture or the environment, into consideration. The aim of the island is to mitigate the relationship between architecture and the environment through the means of transformative, modular vessels, reminiscent of the iconography of a house. These vessels disfigure and erde the icon based off of conditions that art can be viewed and the environment of Mill Rock can be felt to manipulate and curtate the user’s experience throughout the vessels. The eroiding of each vessels happens according to the dematerialization of architectural elements such as walls, ceilings and floors. Each vessel then acts as a canvas for how art is to be curated and created and how the user will feel and experience the environment within it, creating different opportunities for the user while also acting as habitation.

PRATT DORMITORY
NATURAL INFILTRATION BROOKLYN, NY CRITIC: GONZALO CARBAJO PARTNER: BARBARA MIGLIETTI A new dormitory for the freshmen of Pratt Institute nestled outside the immediate vicinity of the main campus, the building aims to bring in the lack of nature along the streets of its context and coerce itself onto the building to allow students to connect and interact with their environment all while still in the heart of Brooklyn.

The dorm sits on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Grand Avenue, enveloped by constant construction and urban life. The block itself is surrouned by the perpetual traffic of students, families and transportation. What the block lacks however, is greenery, which prompted a catalyst for an organic reform in order to inject nature into the housing complex through the use of an interior cavern bursting with trees to create an oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle that shapes the students’ experience of living in a dorm in the middle of the city. By taking the typology of the canyon, the existing city block is sculpted to heighten the students’ relationship with an environment they wouldn’t be able to find outside of their dormitory. Walkways on every even floor provide them with the opportunity to experience nature at different heights and elevations, just outside of their door as the dorm still fulfills and maintains its program as a social housing complex, while also maintaining and even intitiating a direct correlation to nature.

Elevated above the ground, the view of the water is only implied to its visitors, simply because they sense and know that it’s there. The displacement in the change in the height of the site’s topography creates a separation of space - containers that also mimics the world of buildings and skyscrapers that surround it. The site, while out in the open, feels almost private and secretive, leading to a development of questions that ask, “what roles do height, angle and depth play in this building’s spatial implications?”

In playing and exploring with such factors, the viewers and visitors become displaced into a new reality and a new environment. In working at the scale of the whole horizon, the objective quality of the project allows for an exper ience that is no longer dictated or ordered by the site, but yet is still complimented by it. This boathouse displaces its viewers upward, and it defies the landscape of gravity. In redefining its landscape, the object takes on an overarching role that reorders the subject’s spatial understanding.

DIRTY REALISM A NEW CIVIC HONG KONG CRITIC: JASON LEE How can bureaucratic monotony and privatized situations become the focal point of a metropolis’ current urban fabric? The result is a new notion of viewing, a new civic that celebrates the banality of urban life and aims to peel off a layer of privacy that veils society’s day to day routine that takes place in privatized institutions.

The project idealizes a new discourse on viewing. Instead of pushing banality to be a spectacle and creating a stage for the bureaucratic monotony, a new civic is understood through the morphing and reconfiguring of existing places that are too private to display their inner workings. Set in the dynamic metropolis of Hong Kong, buildings are infested at different elevations with a dual-layered labyrinthian mechanism, peeling away a layer of privacy to expose the once ambiguous, privatized metropolitan fabric, rendering it public. The behaviours of different privatized areas, altering the pre-conceived notion that what was once private can now be public and available for viewing. The concept is not intended to fulfill a certain programmed activity, but rather allow individuals to behave and go about their day according to their own beliefs and intentions.

WAVE HILL, NY CRITIC: AJMAL AQTASH A proposal for a scientific research center focused on the development of the artificial intelligent and human interactive relationships, nestled within the confines of Wave Hill, garners a direct link with the landscape that embraces it, as if cut from the same formal fabric.

Interrarium: a scientific research center that specializes in the interaction and exploration between human and artificial intelligent relationships. The center is designed to enclose an area where the social interaction between the two parts take place, while the surrounding pace offset from the middle becomes an area for observation by in-house scientists.
