50 Historic Years at Ohio University The African Studies Program celebrates 50 years since it’s establishment at Ohio University. Recognizing Africa’s prominent position in world affairs in the mid-1960s, Ohio University moved to erect a department that both educated students and honored African history. Since the Program’s creation, Ohio University flourished with depth and rich culture that flooded all corners of the university. The African Studies Program is proud to announce a series of events highlighting Ohio University’s commitment to it’s African-American heritage over the past 50 years. Throughout the 2013-2014 academic school year, faculty, students, and community members alike will find ways to celebrate the African Studies Program colorful history at Ohio University. The Black Alumni Reunion, Sept. 27-28: Ohio’s largest formal alumni reunion, celebrates by inviting hundreds of alumni back to campus to participate in exciting events. From a much anticipated photo event “Through the Decades,” to a Gala at Baker Ballroom, the reunion is packed with festivities sure to honor African heritage and alumni’s time spent at Ohio University. Music Concerts: Khaira Arby & Tal National will play at Stuart’s Opera House September 2013. Listeners will find themselves mesmerized by Tal National’s ancient sounds and reliving this history of Niger through his music. Patience Chaitezvi plays October 2013. Patience, one of Zimbabwe’s only university educated traditional mbira players, embodies women empowerment and embraces rich African traditions during her performance. Media companies submit problems to the contests website for students to answer. CONTACT- Vice President Ryan Lombardi and Professor Dan Farkas are available this Friday from 2-3 with any questions in Baker Ballroom 235. Located off the north end of Court Street across from the Scripps building at 1 University Terrace. WHO- The Scripps Howard Foundation sponsors the competition. Any student can participate in the contest regardless of their major. WHEN- The contest kicked off January 17 and closes March 13. Judges will select ten finalists during Communication Week, March 18-22. In mid April the 10 finalists will participate in a live “pitch competition� judged by a panel of industry judges. PARKING- Free parking is available if you request in advance.
