My name is Danielle Apap, and I recently graduated with a Master of Architecture from the University of Technology, Sydney. My final graduating design project, ‘Inverted House’ was placed third in the d3 Housing Tomorrow international design competition. In response to the brief for new housing strategies for living in the future, the ‘Inverted House’ rethinks the home, land ownership and subsequent relationships to neighbour and street. The ‘Inverted House’ was also exhibited at the Mississippi State University School of Architecture Giles Hall Gallery. ‘Inverted House, Spring 2011
In 2011 I was selected by UTS to attend a study tour of Los Angeles and Chicago. This opportunity allowed me to attend lectures and guided tours, interview Frank Gehry and participate in a symposium with Cal Poly students. Case Study House 22, Los Angeles 2012
In 2010 I was employed by Beverley Garlick Architects. While at Beverley Garlick Architects I worked on a range of domestic projects and small council works. I was exposed to all stages of the architectural process from feasibility studies through to project completion. As such working in a small architectural practice has allowed for a breadth of experiences to be gained included but not limited to physical model making, visualisations (Adobe Design Suite), 3D modeling (Rhino + Sketchup), drafting documentation (Vectorworks + AutoCAD) and client consultations. The creative possibilities enjoyed at university being not so constrained as in my place of work, has been directed towards urbanism and the implications of architecture on the surrounding context. an Inversion of the house in terms of privacy thresholds provides the opportunity for the house to perform the role as mediator between maintaining the independence of the inhabitant and capitalising on the benefits of the collective. circulation traditionally placed internally with rooms on the boundary means neighbouring properties are overlooking into potentially private areas, whereas circulation which is more public is internal. Circulation being a more public zone in the house by placing it on the periphery provides a buffer between private areas and the street and neighbours. this buffer rather than simply circulation is considered equally in terms of its economical, environmental and social potential. Expansion and contraction of the buffer zone provides moments of heat exchange, social exchange and monetary exchange with the introduction of work.

For Epping’s transformation from a typical Sydney rail suburb to a unique city within a polycentric Sydney the existing identifiable green quality of Epping and proximity to farming in Sydney’s North-West was considered. To negotiate maintaining the current sense of place and capitalising on increasing density the design of open space was considered at multiple scales from the unit’s backyard, the block’s courtyard, the suburban park and urban farming at the scale of the city.

Circulation for gallery Views Out + In, Daylight MCA Store Views Out + In, Sunlight
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) is currently housed in the original building for the Marine Services Board. This heavy and concealing building isolates the visitor and performs its original function of holding a demanding position within the harbour housing a powerful government authority of the time. With the opportunity to extend the MCA this static and heavy envelope disintegrates in areas as though the activities and unique experiences occurring between the visitor and art within has been building up and is now seeping through the rigid structure and flowing out into the surrounding landscape encouraging the interaction between the visitor. Based on sun studies of elevations the new structure pierces through the envelope like vines attracted to sunlight. Thus allowing light to seep through the building appropriate to the program behind, the porosity of the structure negotiates the black box requirements of gallery spaces against light filled circulation routes and gaining views in and out of the once introverted envelope.

The proposal for a Sydney Concert Hall opposite the Sydney Opera House in the Sydney Botanical Gardens, takes inspiration from its natural surroundings. The form adjusts to enable visitors to continue to meander throughout the park with the columns mimicking the trunks and the ridge line of the trees dictating the form of the roof line.
