1.0 PROJECT OVERVIEW

1.1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION Analyze La Roche College building system and signage. Understand the traffic flow of stakeholders and how people navigate throughout the space. Develop a strategy to resolve issue and improve the signage.

GOAL A THOROUGH WAYFINDING SYSTEM FOR THE LA ROCHE COLLEGE GROUP OF BUILDINGS THAT WORK TOGETHER ON ONE SITE. ALLOWING EASY ACCESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO NAVIGATE WITHING THE SPACES.

1.2 HISTORY & BACKGROUND La Roche College was founded in 1963 by the Sisters of Divine Providence as an independent, private, Catholic college for religious sisters. By 1967, to accommodate its growing enrollment, the College expanded beyond its leased space to construct its first College building, the John J. Wright Library. In 1979 the construction of the Palumbo Science Center started , which opened in 1980. Marking its 25th anniversary in 1987 with the dedication of the $2.5 million-Zappala College Center. The Magdalen Chapel was added in 1990, and in 1993 the college opened the Kerr Fitness and Sports Center In 1997 a residence hall was added to the campus with the dedication of Bold Hall

2.0 SITE ANALYSIS

2.1 SITE MAP BUILDING ORGANIZATION & TRAFFIC FLOW The main traffic flow is through two main hallways that navigate people to each building location. The main decision points to navigate from are identified with yellow dots. Connection points to further locations would also need secondary signage to lead people in the correct direction.

2.2 SITE AUDIT EXPERIENCE PERSONA This site audit was performed as a new student of the school who did not know where to navigate. A freshman design major who is a commuter for the first day of classes held in the Academic Extension building, the basement of Wright Library and then is told to visit the security office for a student ID.

There was little signage to reach the location. When asking someone for directions they were not able to clearly describe the Wright Library or Design studio areas. Directions were confusing and incorrect. 8. BOOK STOR E 5. ZAPP ALA COLL EGE CENTER 7. C AFETERI A 6. ANNEX BUILDING

2.3 OBSERVATIONS

Empty Entrance, No directions or navigation

There is an elevator sign present, but no directional signs leading to the design studios or Wright library.

SUMMARY [ISSUES & SUCCESSES] ISSUES There is no signage to direct people once they enter either of the main entrances. When people are new to this location they would have to ask someone or try and find it on their own. There are many decisions making points along the way to destinations that do not help differentiate buildings lead or lead to the correct area. There are no signs telling you when you have reached a specific destination and many of the room numbers and arrows guiding are printed on paper.

Room number locations listed online have not been updated to the accurate location of rooms that have been changed within the building.

SUCCESSES People are now aware of target areas that people have trouble navigating to , so they have made signs to help guide people better.

3.0 WAYFINDING STRATEGY

3.1 SIGN LOCATIONS STRATEGY Visitors will have a pleasant and easy time navigating throughout the spaces. Well explained directional signage will allow comfort and ease as the visitor Identifies where they need to go. Primary destination map located after the entrance point will explain the color system of each building. Directional graphic on the floor and wall will allow easy understanding and flow to the necessary area without assistant from others.

1. SCIENCE CENTER 2. CHAPEL 4. WRIGHT LIBRA RY 3. AC ADEMI C EX TENSION

The main entrances will have a directory map which will be color coated by area 8. BOOK STOR E

Secondary Signs will be directional toward each different area and building. Tertiary navigation will have large wall signs when reaching the destination.

5. ZAPP ALA COLL EGE CENTER 7. C AFETERI A 6. ANNEX BUILDING

The main entrances will have a directory map which will be color coated for each building

3.2 SIGN TYPES DIRECTORY MAP The identification of main entrances will be necessary since there are no signs to guide you when first entering the building. An over all map of the main buildings will be displayed. This will be a beginning point to the navigation system and allow for further information to destinations once entering.

A duel system with a directory of destinations and wall graphics will resolve the issue of finding a specific building then room.

DIRECTORY OF DESTINATIONS This sign type will compliment the primary entrance directory map. Colors and arrows will give further guidance when navigating to the right area. These will be displayed at main decision making areas.

DIRECTIONAL SIGNS [GRAPHICS ON WALL]

The directory map will resolve difficult areas and corners that are hard to navigate through.

Graphics on the walls will be successful to follow throughout the spaces. Some areas become difficult to find even when signs are present for the area or room. This type of signage will allow easy flow for the person to follow with simple shapes and bold colors.

The sign placement will differ for each location, the main entrances will have a primary destination map once entering the building. Secondary signs will be placed within the hallways to continue guiding people from the main sign. Color coordination is used to represent each building. Once reviewing the main directory sign, the colored symbols will help lead you to the secondary signs then the primary building or room that you are looking for.
