Paradise Fears is an alternative pop band that was formed by five friends in a small town in South Dakota. For several years, Sam Miller, Cole Andre, Jordan Merrigan, Michael Walker, and Marcus Sand have told their story to thousands of fans through their music. In September, I (Ashleigh) had the privilege to watch the band perform and photograph them at the House of Blues in Houston, Texas. Opening with their song “What Are You Waiting For, Paradise Fears put on an energetic and intimate show.

Bad Suns formed in 2012 out of Woodland Hills, California. The talented group has quickly gained national attention with their smash hit “Cardiac Arrest” released earlier this year via ITunes free song of the week. The song also gained a lot of attention in the Indie-Pop-Rock community. Bad Suns released their EP “Transpose”. Vagrent Records signed Bad Suns where the 23 band released their debut album, “Language & Perspective”.
“Language & Perspective” debuted in mid June. I have had the opportunity to see them multiple times this year and follow them through out their successes. The first time I saw them was at SXSW Music Festival in March at the Blackheart on Raney St, Austin. The venue was buzzing with avid music goers. A few months later I saw them sell out the Cambridge room at the House Of Blues, Dallas. A few days after that they opened for the “1975” at the same venue in the main hall. The show was sold out. They are currently on tour with “New Politics” on direct support. Bad Suns is made up of Chirsto Bowman, Lead Vocals; Miles Morris, Drums; Ray Libby, guitar; and Gavin Bennett, Bass. The indie rock group started off their set with the song “Transpose”, setting the groovy positive vibes for the evening.

Their uplifting indie vibes put the whole room in a positive mood. Christo lightened the mood interacting with the crowd; the crowd sang back every word loudly to the band.Christo finished off the night with the song, “Sleep Paralysis” topping the night off crowd stuffing over the energetic Dallas crowd. 25 music video for song “Salt”. Christo Mentioned releasing the
Catch Bad Suns on tour with “New Politics through November 30th and headling their own tour in 2015. Dates on their headlining tour will be released soon.

EMM: How did you get into music? SS: I’ve been singing since before I can actually remember! Music has been a huge part of my life. I think just about everyone has some kind of passion, and music happens to be mine! EMM: You have opened for bands such as MKTO, Ariana Grande and Big Time Rush, how was your experience working with big names such as those? SS: I’ve been really lucky to get to perform so many amazing acts! I can honestly say I have not had any bad experiences with anyone! Every artist or band has been so nice, and I’ve even become great friends with some of them! EMM: You just released a debut single called Heartstrings how was the overall response from the single been? SS: The response to “Heartstrings” has been amazing. It’s been such an overwhelming feeling to have people love something so much that you pour your heart and soul into! I’m so excited for what’s going to continue to happen to “Heartstrings”! EMM: What was the inspiration for writing Heartstrings? SS: The inspiration comes from a true story about someone who keeps giving you mixed signals. You just don’t know where you stand. Unfortunately we all have experienced this. And relating to the listener is very important to me when I’m writing. 29
EMM: Heartstrings has gotten radio play lately, what was your reaction when you first heard it was on the radio? SS: I don’t even know if words could express how excited I was! It was kinda surreal. It’s one of the biggest milestones of my life, and I will NEVER forget it. EMM: While on the road what is something you MUST have at all times? SS: Oh for sure – my mobile phone, And I always have to have Quest protein bars and almonds for energy. I try to eat really healthy and it’s really difficult to do on the road! This is one of the ways of staying on track! EMM: You have an EP coming out soon can you tell us anything about the material on it? SS: I can’t say too much yet, but you can definitely expect relatable songs – ya know, things that girls and guys go through. I think there are some unexpected aspects that will surprise fans too :) EMM: What band has influenced you most in your musical carrier thus far? SS: One of my biggest current day influences is probably Justin Timberlake! He’s an all around performer and really hilarious and has stood the test of time! Those are all things to strive for. EMM: What songs are you jamming to at the moment? SS: Songs I’m jamming out to right now are “This Is How We Do” by Katy Perry and “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran! Good stuff! EMM: Favorite band of all time? SS: It’s almost impossible to choose! Probably one of my favorite bands growing up was Green Day. They actually influenced me to pick up a guitar. EMM: Before you stage is there something you do? (like a pre show ritual) SS: Before a show I make sure to eat a light meal, do some vocal warm-ups, do some pushups and just joke around. I’ve learned from experience that staying loose before helps me perform better! And a little secret something right before I go on. EMM: Tell us a Funny fact about yourself? SS: I love 80’s movies like Back to the Future and Ferris Bueller’s Day off! I may or may not talk like a baby to my dog EMM: Where can we find your music? SS: You guys can find my music on iTunes, Amazon, Pandora and Spotify! EMM: Where can we find you on social media? SS: You can check me out on Twitter and Instagram @spencermusic1, as well as FaceBook and Vine @SpencerSutherland! EMM: What is an artist you would like to tour with in the future? SS: I would love to tour with Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato! They both are amazing performers and such pros. They have relatable music and they are Great to their fans!! 30
