VALLEY RIDGE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTRE

PROJECT INFO OBJECTIVE: Interpret a given program, and create a design solution that accommodates the needs of users in an institutional facility, following Alberta Building Code requirements. Consider function, aesthetics, and life cycle suitability for typical spaces in an institutional facility. SOLUTION: Through extensive schematic planning, rooms are placed accordingly for better functionality. With pops of color, the Arts Center is minimalistic but bold environment that is welcoming for all ages. The balance of natural and expressive elements is combined to create a relaxing and energetic space for the mind and soul to focus on art, dance and music. Sustainable features include: custom millwork and artwork locally provided, with majority of finishes and materials that are LEED Silver Certified. CONCEPT: Valley Ridge is a place where anyone can expand their learning through the expression of their creations, and come together to support each otherรข€™s goals. The design for the Valley Ridge Community Arts Center is inspired by the idea on what a community is all about; Uniting together. Inspiration of late modernism is the underlying form that is developed into a unique and cheerful design. This is expressed using bright colored art murielรข€™s, and natural materials. Students will be able to thrive in this organic and natural environment and stay to enjoy the atmosphere. SOFTWARE: AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup, and Irender *INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

LE GRANGE HOTEL

Cafรฉ

PROJECT INFO OBJECTIVE: Interpret a given program, develop and express a design solution that accommodates the needs of all users. Refresh and re-brand an existing hotel choosing a theme of your own for the Woodridge Group Developers. SOLUTION: The concept chosen for the design was, รข€œModern Elegance.รข€? The main inspiration came from the intense nature that surrounds the hotel. Existing columns were made appealing by cladding them with a carved wooden tree design. With the challenge of the building shape and large obstructing columns, walls are placed where the columns are to make them less obtrusive on either side of the wall. Every room needed a window which allowed the overall layout of the rooms to stay the same size, however, some became narrower and long, while others had to be shorter and wider. CONCEPT: The Le Grange Hotel is an modern and elegant hotel designed specifically for the business class. The inspiration for the design deprives from the beautiful natural landscape that surrounds it, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment for visitors. The concept flows throughout the space and is seen in each detail, material, and finish. The use of a neutral color palette paired with forest green and deep royal blue add interest and pop of the color into the space. The clean, streamlined manicured surfaces paired with high-end Porcelain tiled flooring promotes a feeling of wealth. The brown and earthy tones warm up the space while glass and crystal elements dress-up the main area, setting a precedence for the desired clientele. MAI RESTAURANT

PROJECT INFO Group Logo

OBJECTIVE: Design a Vietnamese restaurant on WEM Bourbon Street based on existing and client supplied criteria. Requirements include a functional furniture layout, choosing appropriate furniture, finishes, upholstery, and a custom bar design. In addition, design an eyecatching storefront design that creates an intriguing and inviting first impression. SOLUTION: Different textures and materials are used to define different dining areas within the space. Guest have the choice upon variety of seating options to provide comfort for any personnel preferences. An open and spacious floor plan is incorporated to provide easy visibility to these areas. All design decisions are steered from the Vietnamese culture, their traditional elements, and customs. CONCEPT: A modern interpretation of traditional Vietnamese design is celebrated by incorporating the elements of a courtyard. This restaurant is distinguished by natural elements that integrate the concept of bringing the outdoors inside. Based around the idea of escaping from a busy atmosphere, MAI restaurant creates a sense of illusion to the outside environment that exists within an indoor space. This restaurant strives upon a courtyard style design which provides a relaxing and intimate oasis for dining and is done by using natural materials such as wood and stone. The most prominent feature in this space is the Buddha statue which is a classical element that shows respect to Vietnamese culture. This statue is the focal point in this restaurant and is the center of attention to which all other traditional components radiate around. These components include featuring structures that tribute to the One Pillar Pagoda, laser cut steel arch, custom lantern light fixtures, and a wooden trellis. All of these components come together to support the idea that when classical architecture is combined with traditional elements, a space can reflect culture in many aspects of its design. โ–ถยญ Custom bathroom doors showcases an intricate door design. This was inspired by the pattern of the store front arch and the patio railing. These doors incorporate the gold tones that were found in the niche walls to add a nice contrast to the dark wood door. This color also ties back to the Buddha statue to coordinate with all other existing design elements.

Mezzanine Wall โ–ถยญ The main inspiration for this side of the restaurant was to incorporate the one pillar pagoda; A element of traditional outdoor Vietnamese design. Along this wall, the columns are incorporated into the pagoda design and was intended to decorate the wall for something people can appreciate while dining. Custom wood panels inspired by Vietnamese doors are another architectural element used in the space. These panels divide the bar and the semi-private dining rooms away from the main dining space.

PROJECT INFO OBJECTIVE: Using an existing retail space, collaborate with NAITโ€™s business students as clients to design a car audio shop. Ensure all requirements and request are met while also providing them with personal design expertise and knowledge in all aspects of the project. SOLUTION: Information was obtained through rigorous research, individual case studies, and concept was developed through weekly meetings with the client. CONCEPT: Boominโ€™ Audio isnโ€™t only a car audio retailer; it is a brand that delivers an experience. The concept for the space is derived from the smooth lines of a rally car, which rings true through the form and finishes of the store. Shades of black and white are used in the flooring and walls to enhance the product, and candy-apple red is used to evoke a rush of energy and excitement. A variety of curvilinear, high-gloss storage displays and LED lights are used to accurately showcase product. Stained concrete is used in areas such as the speaker/sub-woofer display area, and in the main body of the store to give the space a modern garage feel, while wood plank tile is used as an accent and a mild way-finding technique. Brick, painted matte black, is used as an accent on the most prominent wall one sees upon entry, and on any columns that may be exposed. With inspiration derived from a rally car, Boominโ€™ Audio exudes a cool, stylish, and relevant design. These elements combined are sure to provide a quality customer experience that will leave a lasting impression. Reception and Waiting Area

PROJECT INFO OBJECTIVE: Using an existing facility building, renovate to design an extended care facility that accommodates a standard facility and a dementia ward based on assigned concept. Design a space that will cater a welcome environment to the residents and a comfortable work atmosphere for staff. Space planning must be met including number of resident rooms, public and private spaces, and space to space proximity. SOLUTION: The guiding concept, Serenity, was deprived from the need to create a relaxing and homey environment that was comfortable for both the residents and staff. Collaboratively, designed was a home that created a separation between the residentโ€™s rooms and the living area for privacy but still allowed for ease of access to all areas of the space. In addition to this, the main facility and dementia ward are connected and easily accessible to each other but locked for staff access and resident safety. CONCEPT: Through the use of soft pastel finishes, a serene and relaxing atmosphere is created throughout the Smoky Lake Extended Care Home. From the organic movement of the streams in the public area floor patterns, to the flowing bulkheads in the residentsโ€™ corridors, the space takes its shape by inviting natural elements. The gentle lull of water against the warm sand infuses this interior with a calming presence putting the residentsโ€™ comfort and health before all else. The Smoky Lake Extended Care Unit will not only be a welcoming home for residents, but a desirable place for staff to work and visitors to linger. Many social areas are incorporated wherever possible for both residents and staff to enjoy. The central atrium acts as the main games area. This area also provides lots of natural light, and connection to the outdoor spaces and natural organic environments

The concept serenity flows continuously throughout the ceiling design in this facility. Cove lighting is designed into the wave bulkheads throughout the hallways that mirror the floor design.

Wave like floor patterns and randomized curve designs are used for another method of way finding. This imitates the look of water and sand coming together to achieve the feeling of serenity. Reception located upon entry provides easy visibility.

PROJECT INFO *Design competition sponsered by ATB Financial and Kasian Architecture - Top 10 Finalist OBJECTIVE: Following strict adjacency requirements and Alberta Building Code standards, design an ATB Bank. Express design graphically using industry standard techniques including a site analysis. SOLUTION: Located in one of Edmontonโ€™s oldest districts, ATB Financial takes a modern design approach as a step forward into Whyte Ave transition into modern design. Extensive schematic planning was done to create a functional space for both the staff and the public. The floor plan was organized into private, semi-private and public areas for proper security and privacy. Sustainable features such as solar panels, living walls, locally supplied materials and many more. CONCEPT: The design concept for ATB was inspired by the word โ€œProgressive.โ€ A word that strongly describes this growing organization. This concept word was chosen keeping in mind where ATB has been and where they are headed. They are expanding into a new branch design, and banking system to help make banking be more efficient for their everyday customers. A modern design approach was taken to define the โ€œbranch of the future.โ€ The open and welcoming environment spaces in this building will help to engage and encourage real, meaningful relationships with everyday customers. SOFTWARE: AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Sketchup, and Irender *INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

HAND SKETCHES

HAND SKETCHES Shown here, are various sketches done by a drafting pencil. By using a drafting pencil, I find it easier to fade, shade, and manipulate the drawing for a more realistic touch. Drawings shown are daily weekly practices to consistently grow in my sketching skills.
