Introduction This exhibition is a collection of posters designed by the students from the National Art&Design Saturday Club that attended the Cambridge School of Art. There were two main modules which concentrated on print making and graphic design. The students were able to all create their own prints for the posters and learnt about mono printing, lino printing and relief printing. The prints were taken on screen to Photoshop for experiments and development in the graphic design module. The students had two tasks to complete which would help give them an insight to what its like being a graphic designer. The first task was to design a book cover with their edited prints. They learnt how to use text and image together on a book template for preparation of the exhibition posters which was the second task. From the creation of each book cover, students were able to then use the skills and knowledge they had gained and implement these into the posters. The exhibition showcases all the posters that each student developed right from their very first prints.

“I really enjoyed changing the colour of my original piece and adding in effects that I wouldn’t be able to achieve in printmaking. I also loved being given the book cover and poster tasks as it felt like something you would actually do in the design industry. I found the whole graphic design module a very rewarding experience which exceeded my expectations and made me consider graphic design as a future career option.” - Florence Austin

Sorrell Foundation The Sorrell Foundation is a charity set up in 1999 by John and Frances Sorrell. Its aims are to inspire creativity in young people and improve lives through design. The National Art&Design Saturday Club was inspired by the Saturday classes they both attended at their local art schools when they were 14 years old. The Sorrell Foundation’s programmes link schoolchildren with tutors and students at universities and colleges, and with professional designers, artists and architects. These programmes complement the curriculum and develop young people’s talents, life skills and confidence. Over the last 15 years, the Foundation has worked with 10,000 young people across the UK on a range of programmes including: Joined up design for schools, the Young Design Programme, My place and Design Out Crime, as well as the National Art&Design Saturday Club.

8

The Saturday Club The National Art & Design Saturday Club gives young people aged 14–16 the unique opportunity to study art and design on Saturday mornings at their local college or university for free. The Saturday Club nurtures talent, builds confidence and raises aspirations. It helps them to gain qualifications, gives them an insight into studying at college or university and an understanding of careers in the creative industries. It is a potentially life-changing opportunity. An average of 30% of Club members progress on to diploma, foundation or undergraduate courses. Now in its sixth year, the Saturday Club runs in 41 locations across the UK, in colleges, universities and at the Victoria and Albert Museum. As well as more than 100 hours of specialist tuition, young people also benefit from visits to museums and galleries, Masterclasses from leading art and design practitioners and an exhibition of their work in London’s Somerset House.

Florence Austin

“In the printmaking module, I created a print of a

light bulb. I did this by putting ink on a sheet of acetate and rubbing away the areas that I wanted to keep white. I then transferred the image onto a sheet of paper with a printing press. I then used this image on Photoshop. I really enjoyed changing the colour of my original piece and adding in effects that I wouldn’t be able to achieve in printmaking. I also loved being given the book cover and poster tasks as it felt like something you would actually do in the design industry.”

Holly Bowie

“I really enjoyed the 4 weeks we spent on graphic

design. At first I wasn’t happy with the colour of my original print so I was very glad that we could change the colours, brightness and contrast. I also really enjoyed making the book cover and the poster and am very excited to see it in the exhibition. Danielle was really helpful because I had never used Photoshop before and I think I learned a lot from the sessions. I made my print by carving my design onto a piece of a lino and then rolling ink over it with a roller.”

Here is an example of a mono print which represents a silhouette of a tree from Daisy. As the ink was rolled on with a variety of different pressure, it has created a faded effect for the background. This print was then taken into Photoshop and through experimentation the colours were changed from black and white to pale and vibrant pink. As this print was being used for the creation of the poster, this was then cropped and resized.

“I got the inspiration for my print from my pet

tortoise. I made my print by putting a thin layer of blue ink a metal plate. I then use paper-clips and cotton buds to draw the tortoise on the plate, I then printed it on the old printing press. We then had our prints scanned in to edit on the macs. I really enjoyed it because we were taught really awesome things that we do not learn at school. We also got to see some of Danielles work which was awesome. We were also told about using Photoshop professionally which was very helpful for knowing what the industry was like.

“I really enjoyed the Graphic Design section of

the Saturday Art and Design Club, as it was really interesting to see how art can be used in the real world. As well as learning skills that could come in useful in the future. Danielle was a brilliant teacher and I learnt not only how to use Photoshop, but how these skills could be applied in various formats. During the print making module we made prints using a range of techniques such as: relief printing, lino printing and mono printing. Within the mono printing section, we learnt two types: transfer mono printing and plate mono printing. We then experimented using colour, black and white, and different marking tools, to see what styles we could create.

“I had never experienced either printing or

Photoshop at all before so I thought Photoshop was just something to help me correct mistakes in a photo but I could not have been more wrong! You can have rainbows, sunsets, text, visual effects and so much more. As for the actual printing, we experienced linocutting, plate printing and how to create colour blends whilst allowing ourselves to experiment as much as we liked and from that, everyone produced very unusual, original pieces. It was an extremely worthwhile experience and I will carry the lessons I’ve learnt all the way to my Fine Art degree. Thank you so much to everyone involved with both modules!”

“Thank you for the fantastic opportunity to learn how to Photoshop our prints and edit them to look even better than before. We started by applying ink to a metal board and used different materials to scratch, mark and carve out the designs to use in class. During our four weeks, we all had an amazing time experimenting with Photoshop and had a great insight into Graphic Design. I really enjoyed making the book covers and thanks to Danielle I want to explore Graphic Design when at university.

Sophie Liptrot

“When making the print which I used in Photoshop,

in order to accomplish the hand made print I first used a lino cutting tool. I then used red ink to cover the whole board and went over the red with light blue. The print of the blue did not completely match the print of the red when I over lapped them. However this gave it a more 3D effect. When we started work on Photoshop, I learnt how to use Photoshop successfully and I was able to use it to a good standard. I really enjoyed working on Photoshop and learning new techniques and changing my original print to something completely new! I liked how we changed our hand made print to a book cover, poster and just experimented. I think that I will definitely use what I’ve learnt for the future references and for that I would like to say thank you!

“For the first few weeks of the course we did print

making, it was really fun because we learnt new skills and techniques. We made mono prints and lino prints and for my Graphic Design piece I chose my tree. I really loved doing Graphic Design and found it a very enjoyable part of the course. I learnt about all the cool features in Photoshop and turned my print into a book cover and poster. I really enjoyed the way that even though your final product looked like it had been designed by a computer but it was still made by me in the print rooms. I found it amazing how both the print and final pieces looked so differenced. Thank you so much it was really fun and I would love to be something in Graphic Design when I’m older.”

“I made my print throughout lots of experimentation

and layers of colour, complimented with a few paper cut-outs to add in some depth. I learnt many things, how to manipulate your original image in particular and just how to use all Photoshop tools with confidence. I really enjoyed the freedom you could have on Photoshop and how you could always come up with an interesting outcome. I enjoyed changing my work from a hand made print to a poster because I thought it just looks so cool and it was interesting to see your print on books and posters.

The Cats of Christmas Lino Print January 2015

“When making the prints we, used lino and cut out

our designs that we had already drawn on paper. When we had finished cutting, we rolled paint onto the lino. My designs were a dog in snow and cat with a Christmas hat. I used blue paint blended with white. Working with Danielle taught me how to use Photoshop, I had been taught at school but didn’t understand it. Danielle explained it very well and at a good speed. I really enjoyed using Photoshop because it was new and something to experiment with. Making a lino print into a poster and book cover was fun because it again was new for me and I enjoyed experimenting with font and positioning.”

“I decided to create four smaller, individual prints

looking at pine cones from different angles. We used lino and carved our patterns into this. Having four pieces allowed me to experiment with the arrangements as well as colour. I struggled with Photoshop to begin with as I did not understand it well enough to achieve the appearance I was aiming for. I enjoyed exploring different areas of Graphic Design and altering my work depending on the task and template.

Holly Redman – Peat

“I made my prints through a combination of lino

printing and mono printing. I used all the colours I could find and often used my hands to get he different tones and textures. Danielle helped us manage Photoshop and gave us a lot of support along the way! Photoshop was definitely a new and strange thing to me, I started out as a novice and finished the course confident and happy to use it with the help of Danielle and Elliot. It was very interesting to see how the print was turned from a thing on paper to an image on a screen! I really enjoyed changing the colour and size of my print on a mac and even making a book cover! It was a brilliant experience and it really offered a great insight into the world of Graphic Design.”

Roella Smith

“I really enjoyed the process of making my prints.

I spent quite a while cutting the design into a lino block, and then I experimented with lots of different colours. I made lots of different prints, with rotated versions layered over each other. At first I found it a bit difficult to use Photoshop, but once I had gotten some help and guidance it was really fun. Danielle showed us how to use different tools, fonts and effects to make the book cover and poster. My favourite thing I did in the Graphic Design block is my poster because I think the colours are effective and the front works well on the print. It was a great experience and process to start from scratch in the printing room and end up with a digital outcome.
