Being short-listed with two other architecture firms, GPD Group assembled a small team to observe potential site locations and provide design solutions for each location for (2) new PK-5 schools for Massillon Local Schools. As an architectural staff designer on a team that consisted of a project manager, project architect, civil engineer, and rendering designer, this project demanded swift and impactful collaboration. The East location site consists of an L-shaped building with the intention of mirroring the existing L-shaped High School to encapsulate the overall campus for a uniform approach off the street.

PK-5 School NORTH OLMSTEAD LOCAL SCHOOLS
Short-listed for another PK-5 school, a similarly small design team was constructed to observe a single site and provide the most efficient design solution. This building design focuses on core academic wings in an h-layout with the administration and the shared spaces separating the PK through first graders on the east side of the building from the second through fifth graders on the west side. Placing the pre-school on the most forward-facing part of the building allows for parents to drop-off and pick-up their children without interrupting learning, while positioning the youngest children in direct view of the administration team.

PATINA CONCEPT
An organic and additive sheen created by positive energy that inspires progressive reactions as a reaction to its environment.
PROJECT STATEMENT
Midtown, like an electron that is only a small piece of matter, reacts and patinas to add a new, but natural luster to the city of Cleveland, the matter, or the city of which all people are united.
12
THE MAIN SUSTAINABILITY GOAL FOR MIDTOWN GATEWAY, IS TO INTRODUCE VARIOUS POP-UP SHOPPING EXPERIENCES TO THE CITY OF CLEVELAND TO INSPIRE PERMANENT SHOPPING in other vacant buildings. Midtown Gateway serves as the ultimate gateway to a diverse, smart, flexible and versatile community center.
The integration of new bus stops on either end of the building support local bus transportation routes with community bulletins to give the public access to upcoming events and local business information. The green space surrounding the building is open for public use, and will occasionally sponsor social engagement activities and events. These events have a multi-purpose that will also raise donations to prevent gentrification in the community. On the second level, a rooftop community garden also serves a dual purpose where renters can sell their overflow of produce to the downstairs café. The main level café has the ability to transform into a soup kitchen for the homeless when needed.

SPACE PLANNING Midtown Gateway is inspired by innovative design considerations in every brick that promotes a healthy and progressive community. Through organic social interactions and a combination of engaging spaces, a unique sense of place in the rust-belt is established. Physically, Midtown Gateway is a pop-up shop retail destination, but collectively the design pushes past that barrier as a destination spot. Accompanied with the retail aspect, the first level boasts a flexible event space can transition into conference areas for local programs. Although the green space that surrounds the proposed site will have food truck dining, a small sand-which and bar café will be the permanent food source on site to cater to a variety of after hour events and conferences. On the second level, a community rooftop gardening area will be accessible to local renters to grow their own produce. An additional side road leading into the vast, but transparent, parking lot will be a part of the environmental graphics to draw people into the space. The overall design of Midtown Gateway inspires growth at the community level, and economic standpoint on the foundation of bold designs and thorough research.

BIOMIMICRY THE FIREFLY
The smell of earth after it rains. The concept of petrichor is beautifully symbolic in two ways in relation to the Panacea. The first is the feeling. It is the natural aroma of the earth that welcomes the immediate sensation of familiarity and safety once the storm passes. The second is the restoration properties of the storm. It provides life in a variety of ways, including the perfect environment for Panacea’s biomimicry inspiration, the firefly.
22
PHASE ONE EMERGENCY SHELTER
Panacea consists of three phases in the disaster relief sector. Phase I begins with a rapid deployment emergency shelter. The name of this structure is coined from both its physical similarity with an egg, and the embryonic stage of the firefly. The longevity of both the firefly egg and this structure are only designed to accommodate impacted individuals for a few weeks.

24
PHASE TWO CORE SHELTER
The second phase of Panacea has a slower construction process than that of emergency shelter. The components are flat-packed and shipped to the site where they are then constructed by the disaster relief team, or the impacted individuals. The structure is designed to be built with ease by anyone, with or without construction experience. Like the larvae stage of the firefly, these core shelter are designed to house impacted individuals for years to come. Unlike the firefly, people are able to purchase these homes for indefinite use, or resale.

PHASE THREE TOWN CENTER
The final phase consists of the assembling the modular units into a town center. It is here where impacted individuals and rescues are sheltered in the kennel. For individuals who are residing in phase I, the emergency shelter, there is a public restroom and showers provided. This phase can be both temporary like phase I, or more permanent like phase II. The town center offers an array of amenities for both the impacted individuals, and the relief team that make Panacea a safe, calming, and cultivating experience.

RESEARCH Seventh is a tea and meditation cultural unit for college students to immerse themselves in the Buddhist meditation and relax from the everyday stress triggers. From the Buddhist religion’s belief of meditation, the body consists of seven various chakras that one meditates to cleanse and open to elevate both their mind and body. The seventh chakra is the last chakra cleansed through meditation that is considered to be the most spiritual of the chakras. The seventh chakra is associated with the thousandpetal lotus along with the amethyst, selenite, and clear-quartz stones. The color palette consists of purples, grays, and whites pulled directly from the seventh chakras meditation stones. Typography is inspired from the illustrious hand-painted signs found in India.

DESIGN INTENT The first floor of this tea and meditation center can be accessed through either end of the structure by a small collapsible pine stair case. The left entrance is an immediate entrance to the tea counter and merchandise wall display. The right entrance is the secondary entrance that leads to the first floor seating area and green roof meditation area. The organic membrane that surrounds the kitchenette mimics the often cloudy Ohio skies and reflects the sun’s light. It also serves as additional seating on the first floor. The first floor is typically utilized for ordering from the tea counter, purchasing merchandise, and seating for casual conversation or studying. The vertical wing extended over the merchandise wall is comprised of vertical pine beams that allow for natural light to filter into the space below. Below the pine beams is a series of double paned windows encasing a solar panel film. The angle of the window allows for rain runoff to escape the from the furthest end of the structure Connecting the vertical wing to the primary structure is a round, metal element that allows to structure to pivot into a cuboid for easy transportation. The second floor and green roof area are typically for casual conversations, meditation, and the occasional yoga class.

SPRING VILLA CHALLENGE Research a building from the HABS document registry constructed in the nineteenth century and renovate the structure with the original home owner as the client.
SOLUTION The Spring Villa was home to William Penn Younge, a wealthy individual of the community. Younge documents his inspiration from the carpenter books of A.J. Downing for the original construction. For the renovation, the same books were used, but different passages were the inspiration. The renovation draws away from Younge’s version of a cottage, focusing more on a villa for a sophisticated, and classy wealthy home owner.

Grandfather to the Gothic Revival, A.J. Downing referred to the first floor as the preliminary floor. Pointed-arch, stain-glass doors from the dining room and library open onto the veranda comprised of treated pine, which have been added in the renovation to accommodate for the southern heat. An open passageway to the separate kitchen building is located in the back end of the dining room, another element of Gothic Revival southern villas. The dining table holds a leaf to entertain up to twelve people for William Penn’s famous fish fries. In between the dining room and library, an enclosed porch has been included to escape the summer heat. The secondary floor, according to Downing, consisted of bedrooms, a sofa for guests to wait, and a dressing room. Floors consist of hardwood flooring with area rugs to delineate spaces.
