Reed 101

reed

mouthpiece

If the reed warps, its nearly impossible to sound decent.

music

So why do reeds warp? humidity Reeds have a wooden cellular structure, and when humidity

levels change rapidly, the reed does not dry evenly, causing it to warp.

surface storage Storing reeds on a surface which is not perfectly flat (plastic) causes the moisture to leave the reed at an uneven rate. This results in warpage

intervals between Playing a reed to often early on in its breaking in cycle causes usage it to wear down quickly because the cells are not yet sealed.

Humidity Control

Addressing the problems The bottom line is that there is no complete reed storage solution on the market. They’re all too bulky, don’t store the reeds correctly, or don’t hold enough reeds. It’s time for something that works.

Solution

Two humidity gauges, with dials on the outside, monitor humidity of the two separate sides. Humidity sealed with industrial-strength O-rings on each side. 2 sided case, allows holding of up to 20 clarinet reeds

Addressing the problems double sided case each side humidity controlled holds 30+ reeds works with all size reeds reeds help on memory foam strip

Ergonomic Handle Mason’s Trowel

Employ a task analysis in the process of redesigning a simple hand tool so that it is more ergonomic.

Task Analysis

Mixing the mortar: spade is too long for the handle needed to push downward with the trowel to mix

Handle Grip spade is too long for the handle needed to push downward with the trowel to mix Using finger muscles to grip

Handle Grip butt of handle digs into flesh fingers extend beyond handle micro muscles for macro movements

Additional Research Potential Stress point during prolonged use.

X10

Freedom of wrist rotation is key.

ten test subjects with an average age of 29 years

X3

Ability of little finger to wrap around handle.

using three trowels with varying angles centers of gravity and dimension

X15 To complete 15 tasks such as holding the trowel with a load and using it to spread mortar

Subjects reported less forearm fatigue with a handle angle of 19 degrees

Subjects did not prefer a circular handle profile, opting instead for a slightly oblong design
