CHESSSET

Design a family of chess pieces drawing from traditional roles in the game, a broad range of theme opportunities, endless alternatives in craft and manufacturing techniques, as well as artistic interpretation.

3

INITIAL IDEATION Co n sid e r a tion s Materials Traditional vs. non-traditional Manufacturing processes Design aesthetics

P r o c e ss After doing some initial sketching to explore aesthetics, came up with eight ortho sets to show final directions.

REEDCASE

Design a Clarinet reed case from the ground up, using the best technology available in order to accommodate the growing needs and demands of the modern professional Clarinetist.

8

REED 101

+ reed

= mouthpiece

music

If the reed warps, its nearly impossible to sound decent.

So why do reeds warp? humidity

surface storage

intervals between usage

Reeds have a wooden cellular structure, and when humidity levels change rapidly, the reed does not dry evenly, causing it to warp. Storing reeds on a surface which is not perfectly flat (plastic) causes the moisture to leave the reed at an uneven rate. This results in warpage Playing a reed to often early on in its breaking in cycle causes it to wear down quickly because the cells are not yet sealed.

PROUCT BENCHMARKING Storage Surface Quality

Product Opportunity

Humidity Control

Ad d re s s ing the p rob le ms The bottom line is that there is no complete reed storage solution on the market. They’re all too bulky, don’t store the reeds correctly, or don’t hold enough reeds. It’s time for something that works.

10

SOLUTION

Two humidity gauges, with dials on the outside, monitor humidity of the two separate sides.

Humidity sealed with industrialstrength O-rings on each side.

Ad d re s s ing the p rob le ms 2 sided case, allows holding of up to 20 clarinet reeds

double sided case each side humidity controlled holds 30+ reeds works with all size reeds reeds help on memory foam strip

SOAPBAR

Design a soap bar for a middle aged woman who is a dog-breeder and trainer on a farm in Kentucky (American Fox Hounds) who suffers from dry skin and has a love of traditional Appalachian remedies and folklore.

ERGONOMICHANDLE

Employ a task analysis in the process of redesigning a simple hand tool so that it is more ergonomic.

17

TASK ANALYSIS

M ixing the mortar: spade is too long for the handle needed to push downward with the trowel to mix

H a nd le G rip needed to push downward with the trowel to mix Using finger muscles to grip

H a ndl e Gri p butt of handle digs into flesh fingers extend beyond handle micro muscles for macro movements

ADDITIONAL RESEARCH Potential Stress point during prolonged use.

X10 Freedom of wrist rotation is key.

ten test subjects with an average age of 29 years

X3

Ability of little finger to wrap around handle.

using three trowels with varying angles centers of gravity and dimension

X15

Subjects reported less forearm fatigue with a handle angle of 19 degrees

Subjects did not prefer a circular handle profile, opting instead for a slightly oblong design

To complete 15 tasks such as holding the trowel with a load and using it to spread mortar Strasser, Helmut, Baoqiu Wang, and Adolf Hoffmann. “Case Study: Electromyographic and Subjective Evaluation of Hand Tools: The Example of Masons’ Trowels.” Inernational Journal of Industrial Ergonomics 106th ser. 18.91 (1994).
