THESIS PROJECT PERUVIAN - CHINESE CULTURAL CENTER

...true beauty can only be discovered by one who mentally completed the incomplete. Incomplete forms give a certain dynamism to the object because the mind always tends to complete the incomplete. It creates asymetric forms that tend to nature, freedom and originality... Amos Ih Tiao Chiang The Tao of Architecture

PERUVIAN - CHINESE CULTURAL CENTER

CHINESE CULTURE IS ALL ABOUT HIERARCHY, EQUITY, BALANCE, HARMONY, RESPECT, PRECISION, NATURE, AND THE LIST COULD GO ON AND ON. AS EVERY PROJECT THERE IS A HUGE LIST OF CONDITIONS THAT HAVE TO BE FOLLOWED IN ORDER TO ACOMPLISH WHAT EVER IS WANTED. “ARCHITECT´S ARCHITECTURE” SHOULD NEVER BE IMPOSED TO CULTURE, ON CONTRAIRE, IT SHOULD PAY RESPECTS TO IT. SO THE WAY THIS CONCEPTS WERE ADOPTED THROUGH THE DESIGN PROCESS WAS IN A METAFORIC MANNER. NOT LITERALLY. IT WANTS TO BE THE INTERPRETATION OF THE WAY CHINESE PEOPLE LIVE THEIR LIVES THROUGH THIS PRINCIPLES. IN OCCIDENT WE TEND TO THINK THAT IN ORDER TO LINK TWO THINGS, A THIRD ONE IS NEEDED. IN ASIA, EMPTYNESS BECOMES THE LINK AMONG THINGS. TAOISM IS ALL ABOUT WHAT´S NOT THERE, WHAT´S NOT SEEN OR HEARD. IT PUSHES US TO LOOK DEEPER, TO CONCENTRATE ON IMPORTANT THINGS THAT ARE NOT ALWAYS NECESARILLY AT FIRST SIGHT. SO THAT WE CAN DISCOVER THE MISTERY ON THINGS.

...WHAT CAN BE LOOKED, BUT NOT SEEN...IT IS BEYOND FORM..............LAO - TSE

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE NOMENA ARQUITECTOS, 51-1 ARQUITECTOS, EHRLICH ARCHITECTS

Conceived as an open space where to discuss, question, generate and reinvent architectural issues. Based in a philosophy where collective effort wins over individuality, embracing design as a way of understanding life. nomena arquitectos

ZET BOURAHOUN CENTRE DE THALASSO

NÓMENA ARQUITECTOS In association with atelier barclay&crousse

This project is located in the coast facing the Mediterranean Sea. It contains a 5 star hotel and a group of temporary houses.Program is organized around a bay that divides the two functional packages. The houses to the east and the hotel towards the west. The houses merge with topography by using materials and vegetation. The hotel on the other hand stands tall with it’s three blocks emphasize it’s hierarchy among the rest.

FLORYPLAN

NATIONAL COMPETITION 2ND PRIZE WINNER

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS In association with Juan Carlos Doblado

The Flower Market proposal begins with the big burden that means incorporating surroundings in which the project is located: Rimac Historic Center. From this point, a big square is generated at the main entrance, contributing with public space to the city. In the interior, the program is organized along an axe set to be a pedestrian walk that reminisces to the ones created in Historic Center. Modular sales cabins are arranged through internal streets. Finally, a great ceiling covers the whole project unifying all ot it’s components.

RINCONADA COUNTRY CLUB COMPLEMENTARY FACILITIES COMPETITION

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS The main idea was to generate a great receiving space for visitors that transforms traditional parking lots in Lima in a very strong manner. Functionally speaking the parking lot was resolved in a very simple, clear way attending to problems such as traffic jams in major events, parking spaces, turning radios, among others. In addition to this, environmentally conscious design was present at all times. Perforations were set along the site so that big trees could emerge from the basement and through these holes, trying to attenuate gas emision and purifying the air. A football 7 court was placed over columns serving the main court with grades for public.

PROFILES PERU OFFICE, PRIVATE RESIDENCE

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS Project Completed on March 2007

Design, construction, supervision and documentarion of private residence in Lima. This project is an addition of a house built in the late 70's. The proposal is organized around a central patio. The skins that composes the facades allows the entrance of controlled ventilation and efficient illumination, respecting materiality in the surroundings that precede it.

CIRCUS HOUSE

CIRCUS SHOP, PRIVATE RESIDENCE

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS This project contemplates the combination of both the traditional use in a house, an office and the clients biggest passion: the circus. The whole house is organized attached to the longest side of the site. Along with this an arm emerges from the main volume reinterpreting the circus structure and dividing the site in two, the circus on one side and a garden slope on the other.

CHACLACAYO HOUSE PRIVATE RESIDENCE

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS Completion due on 2009

The Huisa-Garate House is located in San Alberto, Chosica, on a 13 x 85 m. rural site covered with avocado, lucuma and granade trees. The analysis of the unique conditions of the location, along with client requirements and site configuration resulted in the reinterpretation of the peruvian highland house, meaning that the project was going to be treated as a fragmented house: series of bungalows split along the site, dependent of the main building. The location of these blocks were determined by the location of free spaces configured by trees. Same as the main building which was located surrounding the biggest tree in an L shaped configuration, creating an intimate entrance patio.

BELEVAN HOUSE

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

51-1 ARQUITECTOS Project Architect Completion due on 2009

The house is located in a relatively small site in San Isidro, a classic, upscale and restrictive district in Lima City. The premise was to insert a considerable amount of new program, while preserving the structure of the old, not exceeding in height as well as allowing as much free space as possible for the kids to play. All of these requirements seemed quite impossible to accomplish in a traditional way. So the project took the basic principals of peruvian houses, which consist in a central open space, and twisted it. The initiative of exploring different levels and layers of free space allowed the project to fit the new program. So the central patio is the initial point and then it starts it’s way upstairs surrounding this free space while keeping this path open as well. By going up and down half a level each, it gains a whole floor where to distribute function. So to get to different points of the house, one would have to either use the stars or climb the platforms as it is used in the Andes.

INURRITEGUI HOUSE

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

51-1 ARQUITECTOS Project Architect Completion due on 2009

The tight budget for this house limited the range of actions. The main intention was to revitalize the space and make it more comfortable, efficient and contemporary. That also included incorporating natural light to emphasize the sensation of being in a wider, cleaner space.

DUBAI HOUSE

PRIVATE RESIDENCE

STEVEN EHRLICH ARCHITECTS Intern

Houses in Dubai have some unique requirements for their design regarding gender. Some spaces are specifically designed for men and women. This house was designed with a strong sense of order not only concerning the functional necessity of program but also in the modern reinterpretation of typical ornament present in arabic and islamic culture. The project organizes around two main blocks, one for social life and the other for private life. Each of them containing the most important space at the end of the volumes: the majilis and the main bedroom. Across this two blocks are located three canopys, one contains the main hall of the house, the other the hall for men only and the third one contains the hall for the family. This canopies are made of a steel structure designed with middle east figure patterns and all of them enclose double height spaces emphasizing a sense of monumentality.

MULTIFAMILY HOUSING

51-1 ARQUITECTOS Project Architect Completion due on 2009

Infinium Towers were created with the goal of achieving excellence not only in design but in quality of life through space and uniqueness. Meaning that even though it is a multifamily building, apartment units were not created in a serial way. There are more than 20 types of apartment configurations, most of them combining duplex and flats in a same unit. The structure of the building is the one that shapes the facade making it more efficient in terms of materiality and visuals.

MOSQUITO BAR CULTURAL PUB - BARRANCO, LIMA

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS Design, construction, supervision and documentation. The project deals with the remodeling of one old large house in Barranco. The proposal contemplates the opening of a plane that divided the house in two, in order to obtain visual and spatial amplitude, centering the bar as the focal point. Industrial character of both illumination and furniture responded to low budget, leaving decoration to unexpected use and the diverse cultural manifestations of users, such as the beer cases which can be used as small benches when the place is crowded.

COMPETITIONS

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF IDEAS

NĂ“MENA ARQUITECTOS Competitions completed on 2007

The greatest thing about competitions of ideas against regular competitions or projects is that the first one allows certain type of investigation. Proposals enjoy a freedom that in a different situation it would be otherwise overlooked. In Chan Chan, the idea was to create a new type of housing for the global citizen. Perhaps nothing more global than to be able to take your own home all over the world. A habitable structure based on a matritial model connected around the world.

In Kent, in both projects, people played a major role in the design given that their relationship with the cube revealed form and aesthetics granting it with a ludic and dynamic identity.

The project lies within the constraints of the relationship between the site and it’s surroundings, the building itself and it’s relationship with the site. That been said, almost the entire site was purposely designed for sports, outdoors activities and leisure. By doing this it also serves the city by undensifying the building mass, providing breathing space and visual control to the neighborhood letting landscape merge into the building.

12

DESIGN STUDIO

Los Olivos is one of the districts with the biggest economical projection in Lima city. Even though it is equipped with the largest mall in the city it lacks of a cultural zone. Los Olivos Civic Center was designed to solve those necesities. Located in the middle of a dense, industrial zone it is a center to prepare mainly local people to work on that same environment or to start work on their own. The building seeks to insert itself within that same atmosphere, but creating spaces properly enhanced for education.

The Site High density in the zone urged the site to become the lungs of the district and to locate the building as a landmark, exploring not only the relationship of the site and the rest of the context but within the building itself.

Functional Scheme The idea was to achieve spatial and visual communication through an open central space.

Preliminary Ideas The program starts being articulated around this open space served as the epicenter of the whole project. As it evolves, program needs to link buildings that surround this plaza creating a difuse space where to interact.

Final Intention So now the most important space of the whole project, the one that links all of the rest of the activities, the entrance hall serves as the real epicenter of the project, where in a radial way organizes the volumes creating within each other interstitial spaces that serve as mini plazas where people interact depending on their geographical position.

For that reason the project is located at the busiest end of the site, serving as a landmark to the city and for the project itself. Materials such as concrete, aluminum, copper, metallic meshes, among others provide the building with a sense of belonging.

DESIGN STUDIO 6

SAN ISIDRO CITY HALL

Functional Scheme

San Isidro´s City Hall was part of a major civic complex and being the the most representative building in the district it had to personify principles of progress, vanguard and equity. Architecture should trascend time and place in order to gain it´s own identity but it should never overlook at these two conditions because a project belongs to a place and at the same time it creates a new one not only physically but in people´s minds as well. The project has two qualities. The front elevation faces an important avenue while the back facade which is actually the main facade has a big platform where civic acts and other events can take place. B´

If there could exist such a place where peace and freedom reign over any other ideology, things might be completely different. Under that premise the intention behind the project was to reinterpret the way cinemas are organized to be consistent with the agenda. Given the restraints of space dedicated to each project within the site for the Peace Center, the strategy consisted in how to organize as many movie theaters there could be while creating a landmark that could be recognized from an important distance and projecting with an intelligent use of the land.

Reinterpretation of known typologies

NPT NPT

The second intention consisted in establishing a new way to approach the way we watch movies at the theater. So now the box that contains the projection of the movies expands a little to create a ring covered in sound proof glass which allows whoever is passing by, to take a glance at the movie, see where he or she wants to sit or whether this person prefers to go for another movie or stay at this new space/corridor, sit and have a drink at the bar while glancing the movie. It is now a place to see and to be seen. This now approach gives a more dynamic, open way to enjoy a movie, bringing the spirit of the autocinemas into the scene, merging with the classic box.

WORLD PEACE CENTER

DESIGN STUDIO 5

The WPC consisted in a project involving several uses ranging from museums through a sports coliseum as well as a movie theater, a cultural center and a wide variety of facilities. The Project consisted in a movie theater (main building) and a cultural center which contained galleries, press conference rooms, cafeteria and other services. Understanding the dinamic of the whole complex determined in great way the development of the concept that was used to conceive this project.

Oklahoma State University

The main concerne was to innovate the tipology of cinemas. To try to change the way people is used to embrace the process of watching a movie and turn it into a more interactive experience given that you might not have the time to see the whole movie.

Exchange program that took place in Peru and in the US. The project got enriched by the mixture of both south and north american cultures.

That been said, the proposal consisted in a vertical movie theater sorrounded by a ring that contained circulation as well as a snack bar from where you could actually see the movie as you were passing by, so either you liked the movie and enter the room, stayed at the snack bar or coninued the tour. The room itself was protected by a reflecting glass so people inside would not be bother with what´s happening outside.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ECO - COOLER

Completed 2009

Many reasons can trigger creativity. Lack of budget can be a recurring one while being an intern at an architecture office. The eco-cooler means to be environmentally friendly, efficient, industrial and of course aesthetically interesting, but the most important of all is that it is consistent to an agenda towards design and what this can do for humanity. That it can improve our lives while being less intrusive and abusive with our planet. Laser cutter was used for fabrication.

FURNITURE DESIGN BARBEQUE GRILL Completed 2008

The smaller the scale, the highest the level of control and detail. This barbeque grill was made entirely from leftover materials from a previous renovation made by the clients. The structure of the table and walls were made with bricks with a polished concrete finish and the countertop and ceiling were made of red oak, previously treated before installation. Also some remaining floor tiles were placed horizontally to prevent exposure to the charcoal.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

TIMEZONE PROJECT Completed 2008

DIRECTED BY JOHN STUART M.ARCH COLUMBIA GSAPP

Architecture has a relevance that goes beyond built mass. It has the power to potentiate relations between human beings within specific atmospheres. It empowers communication through time and place establishing a sense of order and balance. It serves as a bridge for opportunity. Timezone Project is the proof of that. TimeZone proposes a series of interactive building blocks that provide real-time video communication between people of socioeconomically diverse backgrounds whose daily routines are aligned along a single time zone. TimeZone addresses the potential for public spaces to stimulate group dialogue and revitalize public activities across cultures and languages. Designed for maximum durability and accessibility, the TimeZone pods employ wireless sensor technologies to facilitate interaction between users. They may be suspended or stacked, used individually or composed into multiple configurations.
