INTRODUCTION
My adoration and love for Interior Design began when I was 10 years old. I found a ZEN + EXCITEMENT through creating beauty in a space. I love the ability to make something out of nothing + the infinite possibilities that can be discovered through design. As I pursued my p a s s i o n a t M i a m i U n i v e r s i t y, I d i s c o v e r e d h o w d e s i g n i s s o m u c h m o r e .

It is a language spoken without words with the most successful designs rendering those whom experience it speechless. Moving forward as a designer in the profession, I see each project as a new + exciting c h a l l e n g e w h e r e C O L L A B O R AT I O N , C O M M U N I C AT I O N , + A N ENTHUSIASTIC DISPOSITION are key to success.

[NOTE] THE STORES FLOOR PLAN + CIRCULATION WAS BASED OFF THE GIANT LOGO IN THE FRONT ENTRANCE OF THE STORE CRASHING THROUGH THE WALLS, CREATING A DISARRAY OF PATHS, ALLOWING THE USERS TO CHOOSE WHICH PATH BEST SUITS THEIR ADVENTURE.
[NOTE] ALL OF THE FINAL RENDERINGS WERE COMPLETELY HAND-RENDERED. THEY WERE PRODUCED ON SKETCHUP, THEN TRACED ONTO BRISTOL WITH INK. THE COLOR WAS ACHIEVED THROUGH CHARTPAK AD MARKERS. THE ENTOURAGE WAS DONE WITH PHOTOSHOP OVERLAYS AFTER SCANNING IN THE FINAL HAND-RENDERINGS
[NOTE] THE DESIGN STATEMENT THAT DROVE THE CREATION OF THIS FLAGSHIP REI STORE WAS TO CHALLENGE THE CUSTOMERS TO “GO OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE”. NOT ONLY WAS THAT THE INTENT WITH THE DESIGN, BUT I WAS ALSO CHALLENGED TO GO OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE AND CREATE A PLAN THAT WAS ASYMMETRICAL, STRAYING AWAY FROM THE COMFORT THAT COMES WITH SYMMETRY. THIS PROJECT WAS EASILY THE MOST CHALLENGING IN TERMS OF TESTING MY LIMITS AND BOUNDS OF DESIGN.

[NOTE] PARALLAX IS DEFINED AS “DISPLACEMENT OR DIFFERENCE IN THE APPARENT POSITION OF AN OBJECT VIEWED ALONG TWO DIFFERENT LINES OF SIGHT”. IN SIMPLER TERMS, WHAT IS VIEWED IN ONE PLACE IS NOT THE SAME AS WHAT IS VIEWED IN ANOTHER. THE CHALLENGE WITH THIS DESIGN WAS TO CREATE THOSE ANAMORPHIC MOMENTS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING, CREATING A VISUAL MYSTERY + UNIQUENESS WHEREVER YOU GO.

INVITE
[NOTE] THE INVITE SPACE WAS ADDED TO THE “CREATE. SHARE. INSPIRE.” AS THE LOBBY TO INVITE GUESTS + CLIENTS INTO THE OFFICE. THE OVERHEAD TRELLACE WAS INSPIRED BY OUTDOOR TERRACES. THE TRANSITION TO THE VERTICAL WOOD WALL ALLOWS THERE TO BE A CONNECTION + SEPARATION WITH THE CREATE SPACE.
CREATE
[NOTE] THE CREATE SPACE IS WHERE ALL OF THE CREATION TAKES PLACE. IT ALLOWS FOR COLLABORATION BETWEEN TEAMS AS WELL AS DEFINED INDIVIDUAL + GROUP WORK AREAS. THE SHARE SPACE INCLUDES THE MATERIALS LIBRARY + CONFERENCE ROOMS FOR LARGER COLLABORATION. THE INSPIRE SPACE IS FOR RELAXATION + BREAKS FROM ANY DAILY STRESSORS.

[NOTE] INSTEAD OF USING THE FIVE ELEMENTS IN THEIR LITERAL FORM THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN, I DECIDED TO FOCUS ON THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS EACH ELEMENT PORTRAYS + HAVE THOSE TRAITS INSPIRE THE SPACE. THESE CHARACTERISTICS ALSO INFLUENCED THE TYPE OF PROGRAMMATIC SPACES THAT WOULD TAKE PLACE IN EACH AREA.

[NOTE] THE PARTI FOR MY DESIGN STEMS FROM THIS FIVE-CIRCLE VENN DIAGRAM. EACH CIRCLE REPRESENTS A DIFFERENT ELEMENT/SPATIAL CHARACTERISTIC. FOR EXAMPLE, CIRCLE 1 REPRESENTS “HARMONY + STABILITY” 3 [EARTH]. MY GOAL FOR THAT SPACE WAS TO HAVE A BALANCE OF ALL THE ELEMENTS AND TO ALLOW THE USER TO FEEL CENTERED WHEN ENTERING THE CENTER IN THIS LOBBY. 4

SITE + PLAN [NOTE] THE SITE OF MY DESIGN IS LOCATED AT CULLER AND SHIDELER HALL ON MIAMI UNIVERSITY’S OXFORD CAMPUS. I CHOSE THIS LOCATION FOR 2 REASONS. ACCORDING TO A SURVEY, OVER 70% OF STUDENTS SAID THEY WOULD PREFER THE COUNSELING CENTER TO BE RELOCATED HERE. ALSO, THIS LOCATION IS UNIQUE BECAUSE IT ALLOWS INDIVIDUALS TO HAVE THE PRIVACY OF THE MINI-QUAD IN THE MIDDLE OF A VERY PUBLIC INTERSECTION, ALLOWING FOR EASY ACCESS FOR STUDENTS + FACULTY.

IT ALSO HAS A RUNNING PROJECTION OF WATER TO CREATE THE FEELING THAT USERS ARE UNDERNEATH A RIVER WHICH TURNS INTO A WATERFALL. THERE ARE TWO GREEN WALLS FLANKING THE SIDES OF THE WINDOW. THESE ELEMENTS HELP PULL THE OUTDOORS INTO THE SPACE. THE FLOORS ABOVE AND BELOW OASIS ARE USED FOR ACADEMIC CLASSES, MAINLY THE DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY

THE CURVED PLAN ELEMENTS BALANCE OUT NICELY WITH THE STRONG LINEAR CIELING PLAN. THE LARGE WINDOW ALLOWS FOR MAXIMUM NATURAL SUNLIGHT TO REACH ALL CORNERS ALONG WITH A COMFORTING VIEW INTO THE GARDEN SPACE FOR WAITING PATIENTS. THE TOUCHSCREEN WALL PANEL ALLOWS FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS TO BE POSTED ALONG WITH ANY UPDATES TO SCHEDULE CHANGES FOR PATIENTS AND COUNSELORS.

[NOTE] THE CEILING CLOUD LOCATED IN THE ENTRANCE OF THE CREATIVITY + ENTHUSIASM LOBBY WAS DERIVED FROM THE NEGATIVE SPACE FROM THE OASIS LOGO. IT SYMBOLIZES THE INTERTWINING OF ALL THE ELEMENTS TO CREATE A WHOLISTIC FEELING OF HARMONY + TOGETHERNESS. THE FOUR PAWS OFFICE IN PERSISTANCE + COURAGE ALLOWS THE STUDENTS + FOSTER DOGS TO INTERACT WHILE ALSO LETTING THE DOGS SOCIALIZE WITH THEIR FELLOW SERVICE DOGS IN-TRAINING IN A MONITORED + ENCLOSED ENVIRONMENT.
