The village of Gräflich-Neundorf
The Wehner family can be traced back to the middle of the 16 th century in Neundorf, later called Gräflich-Neundorf, today called Proszowka which is located between Greiffenberg (Gryfow Slaski) and Friedeberg (Mirsk) in Lower Silesia in former Löwenberg County. Since 1945 this former German area which is called Lower Silesia ( Nierschlesien) belongs to Poland. Neighborhood villages are Mühlseiffen, Rabishau, Birkicht, Greiffenberg, Friedeberg and Röhrsdorf.
In 1369 the village was known as NEUENDORFF.The foundation of the village seems to be in connection with the city of Greiffenberg. In 1599 almost the whole village died out because of the pest disease. In 1613 twelve inhabitants of Neundorf died of the pest. In 1640 the Swedish general Mathern burned down half of the village.. In 1692 Neundorf belonged to the jurisdication of Friedeberg, but in 1728 the village was returned to Greiffenberg. The houses were scattered over the whole area. Even in 1576 the name Wehner ( though written in different ways like Wehner/Wener/Wainer) was mentioned in the receipts‘ book of Neundorf-Greiffenstein. In that book all sales and heirs are mentioned. Until the year 1614 the book has various indications towards the Wehner family. Furthermore the names of our ancestors Grabs in 1551, Wagenknecht, Körber, Schubert and Seyffert in 1553 are found. The Wehner Family visited the church of Nieder-Wiesa The family was protestant The wooden protestant church was built in 1669 in the village of Nieder Wiesa which belonged to the Lausitz region at that time and therefore was called a frontier church. This is why the family could remain protestant. In Silesia itself the catholic religion was obliging at some times.

Our Family - The Wehners from 1600 – 1870 in Gräflich-Neundorf
Johann Christoph Wehner was born in 1637 in Neundorf, christened in the protestant church in Wiesa, a village 3 km from Neundorf. His parents were probably George Wehner and his wife Sara-though we neither have a certificate of birth nor marriage of George Wehner due to the fact that in the year 1599 the desease pest has almost devasted the area, which is time around which George would have been born. We know that there were WEHNERS in Neundorf and Greiffenberg even before that date. Johann Christoph Wehner * ca. 1655 and his wife Maria had two sons: Georg and Johann Christoph, who was born in 1676 in Neundorf and christened in Wiesa. In 1731 his son Johann Christoph , farmer and member of the jury , from Neundorf and his son’s wife Anna Rosina got a son who was called Johann Christoph Wehner - after his father -. He was christened on Sep 2, 1731 in Wiesa. Their second son Gottlob Wehner was born in Neundorf in October 1732. In Neundorf there was a man called Chistoph Seiffert. He was married to Margareta. Their son George Seiffert and his wife Anna had a son , who was also called Georg . The younger Georg’s wife was Rosina Körber, daughter of Johann Melchior Körber from Greiffenstein/Neundorf. Rosina and George Seifert were the parents of Anna Dorothea Seifert christened in 1742. Her god-mother was Anna Rosina Wehner. Johann Melchior’s father was Balthasar Körber jr. born ca. 1650 and his grand-father is Balthasar Körber sr. born in 1622 as the son of Melchior Körber from Greiffenberg ( * ca. 1590) and his wife Maria fil. rel. Schwerdtner. Melchior’s father was Jacob Körber from Greiffenberg born ca. 1565, who lived in the Laubische Gasse (street name). The Körber family apparently had very deep roots in that area as there are also documents showing KÖRBER or KERBER Johann Christoph Wehner gained citizenship and was said to be a bleacher of some importance lived in Neundorf. He was born in 1731 and was married to Anna Dorothea Seifert in 1766 in the church of Wiesa. Their son Christian Gottfried Wehner * May 6, 1770 in Neundorf ( we do not know his profession) was married to his 1st grade cousin Agneta Elisabeth Wehner, daughter of Gottlob Wehner from Neundorf. on Feb 24, 1794 in the protestant church of Nieder-Wiesa. Agneta’s mother was Maria Elisabeth Wagenknecht, daughter of the Neundorf based farmer Gottfried Wagenknecht (who was married 3 times) Their son Ehrenfried Wehner was born 1800 in Neundorf. Before he was four years old, his father passed away and his mother was married to the widower Johann Friedrich Voigt in 1804 in Niederwiesa. Ehrenfried was first married to Juliane Tischer. No marriage certificate was found in the church records of Wiesa. As she apparently died shortly after the birth of her son August, he was married in 1830 to Johanna Scholtz from Röhrsdorf near Friedeberg situated at the river Queis at the church in Ober-Wiesa. Röhrsdorf is not far away from Neundorf and is called Skarbkow/Poland today. In the documents Ehrenfried is called a Häusler, which means that he owned a house. At the age of 89 he passed away in Neundorf in the year 1889.
Various sources say that Ehrenfried Wehner had three sons Carl Wilhelm , and Caspar – who emigrated to the U.S. in the end of the 19th century, August who lived in Greiffenstein the village next to Neundorf and young Ehrenfried who lived in Neundorf. He also had a daughter Christiane from 1st marriage. There are only two sons, of whom we have birth certificates. One is Carl Wilhelm Wehner, head of the widely spread Wehner clan in Germany (Berlin and North and West Germany) and the United States and his brother August with its descendants in and around Berlin/Germany. These two brothers, Carl and August Wehner and their families are the only members of the Wehners, recorded in the church records of Nieder Wiesa between 1847 and 1915.

Carl Wilhelm Wehner 1831 – 1907 A life on two continents Reconstruction of his life 1831
12 December: I was born in the small village of Gräflich-Neundorf south of Greiffenberg in Löwenberg County in Lower Silesia, Germany
My parents are Ehrenfried Johann and Christiane Scholz WEHNER, second wife of my father. My father’s family has lived in Gräflich-Neundorf ever since, my mother’s family lives in the small town of Röhrsdorf on river Queis not far away. My parents were both 31 years old when I was born. I have an older brother: August Johann Friedrich, born in 1825 and an older sister called Johanna Christiane Wehner, both are from my father’s first marriage with his first wife Johanna Juliane Tischer . My sister Christiane was born in 1828 19 December: I was baptized in the Protestant church of Nieder-Wiesa some kilometers north of where we live. 1838 In our village there is a school, which I attend, so I learn how to read and write. We speak the Silesian accent. 1852 I was married to Johanne Ernestine Grabs in Wiesa. We have known each other all of our life, as she also lives in our village together with her family. I work as a garment bleacher. My parents-in-law are Carl Gottfried Grabs and Charlotte Schubert . Moritz Grabs is my brother-in-law, he also lives in Neundorf. 1852 20 December: Our first son Carl Gustav Wehner was born in Neundorf today. His god-parents are: Auguste Wehner –daughter of bleacher Wehner, police officer Meißner’s son from Neundorf and tailor Ortner from Neundorf. Unfortunately my nephew died in May 1864. 2 July : Our son Carl Hermann Wehner was born in Neundorf and passed away within the first months 1865
2. July : Exactly one year after Carl Hermann’s death, Ernestine and I got a daughter: Marie Pauline- she dies on October 14.
In Greiffenberg the station opens for the new „Schlesischen Gebirgsbahn“ (Silesian mountain rail) from Görlitz to Hirschberg. 1868

27 December Mmy daughter Clara was born today. I am already 48 years old and have been a grandfahther for two years. 1880
Now that I am 49 years, I decide to immigrate to America. All of my children will all stay in Germany – for the moment at least.
1881 NYC 1881 16 March: I leave Germany. The cruise takes me on SS FRISIA from Hamburg via Le Havre in France to New York. 31 March: Today I arrived in New York after having been at sea for 11 days. From New York I moved on to Daytona in Florida. Momentarily I am on my own, but Bertha and our common children will follow. I started working on one of the orange groves and worked for Norman Harwood. My son Max Wehner was born in Germany. I will first see him when he comes to the States 17 June: My grand-son Bruno Wehner , Carl and Marie’s son, was born in Sorau in Germany. Will I ever see him and his family again? 1882 My grand-son Max Wehner was born in Sorau, Carl Gustav’s and Marie’s 3rd son 21 Dec Finally my wife Bertha has arrived in the States on SS Werra with our children Max ( 11 months) , Clara and Ewald in America. Their way led them from Bremen via Southhampton/England to New York and then further on the the Daytona area. 1884 I left behind my daughter Minna in Germany with relatives. When Minna arrived as a 17-year-old in America, Gottfried Meiritz, Minna and me rode from Jacksonville in a mule-drawn hack down the Kings Road to Harwood's property, where Gottfried and I were employed. Minna was married to Gottfried and also started working for Norman Harwood. She was now cooking for the 100 employees. Gottfried’s brother Ferdinand Meiritz also worked there
Historical accounts say Norman Harwood bought the land in 1880 and employed 25 white men and 125 black men. They planted an orange grove in 1881 and grew sugarcane, corn and sweet potatoes that were taken to St. Augustine in mule-drawn wagons to be sold. 14 November: My grand-son Willi Wehner was born in Sorau/Germany , Carl Gustav’s and Marie’s 4th son . My oldest son Carl Gustav with his family will also immigrate to the States. 1885 02 June: My son Carl Gustav Wehner has arrived today aboard SS Star of Pennsylvania in New York! His voyage led him from Sorau via Hamburg, Glasgow in Scotland and Larne in Ireland. From New York he went further south to Daytona Beach. I am so happy to see him, we haven’t seen each other for four years. Norman Harwood died, there are rumours that we had committed suicide because of his debts. Minna and Gottfried were the last to see him alive, he had a long conversation with them and shook hands with them in the end which was very unusual of him. Minna and Gottfried move to Ormond Beach, Bertha and I to Daytona. 1886 The St. Johns & Halifax Railroad now reaches Daytona 28 October The Statue of Liberty is revealed today 08 November My daughter-in-law Marie Wehner has arrived aboard SS Rugia via Le Havre in New York. My grand-children, Martha Auguste ( who is already 11 years old), the liitle 3 – year-old Max, the 7-year-old Otto, and Bruno as well as Willi are also with her! She moves on to Palatka on St. John’s river and is not too happy to recognize that she has to move on to Blake/ Daytona after having taken Palatka for Blake. I am so glad to see them all, though Marie misses Germany a lot and would rather go home than stay here 1887 20 February: Our son Oswald Max W. Wehner was born in Blake/Florida. He is my only American-Born child. Now South Daytona Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station is opened and the first wooden draw bridge crossing the Halifax River at Ormon Beach –Granada Bridge on S.R. 40 is built My son Paul now lives in Berlin some 260 km north-west of Neundorf 10 November: My grand-daughter Ida Ella Wehner is born in Daytona/Florida. She is Carl Gustav’s first child, born in America. 1888 11 March : A blizzard starts to slow down life at the US East Coast. The severe storm lasts for 1,5 days and causes the death of 400 people. 02 July: My son Paul Wehner is married in Berlin to Auguste Amalie Förster from Schwedt/Oder. I really hope, Paul can convince his already pregnant wife to come to Florida. 10 November: My grand-son Willi Paul Gustav was born in Berlin. Paul and Auguste’s first child 1889

11 August: Today, again a Thursday, my grand-daughter Ella Wehner is married to Frederick Brubacker in Schmidt’s Villa in Daytona. Frederick’s family is from Alsasse-Lothringa, means he is also a German. It is a big party. They are wed by Reverend Bingham. Their witnesses are Bruno Wehner and Rose Ditmann. Henry Schmidt’s wife was decorating all rooms with flowers and everything in green and white. Our friend Henry Schmidt held a speech, first in English, then in German and ended with a quotation from the French-Prussian war. There was a long guest list: Reverend Bingham,Henry Schmidt and his wife of course, Wilhelmina Politz, Clara Meiritz – Ellas cousin -, Clara’s parents Gottfried and Minna Meiritz, the Michaels, the Dittmanns, the Politz, Carl Kost and wife, Mr. Ball, my grand-son Otto and Annie, and Otto’s parents Carl Gustav and Marie Wehner ( the parents of the bride) and many more. So there were four generations of Wehners attending this wedding. The following Saturday there was a big article about the wedding in the Daytona Gazette! 1905 16.
